As reported earlier, Randy Orton took a shot at NXT wrestlers as they were slapping their legs before every kick during this past Sunday’s NXT TakeOver: In Your House. Once the WWE Network special went off the air, Tommaso Ciampa then reacted to the tweet saying that Orton’s matches are ‘sleeping remedy’ for her daughter, in response.
Randy Orton then went on to call Ciampa a self-appointed leader of the NXT locker room who got his feelings hurt with the tweet. Orton’s wife, Kim Marie Orton, also got involved in the Twitter banter posting a sarcastic tweet. You can click here to see the entire social media banter. It seemed that these two superstars have eventually rubbed each other in the wrong way and WWE officials aren’t happy about it.
WWE has its own rulebook where they only allow wrestlers to take shots at each other on Twitter if and only they’re involved in a storyline. In this case, Randy Orton from the main roster and Tommaso Ciampa from NXT has no chances to get into a feud, on-screen.
Revealed: Potential Winner Of Randy Orton Vs Edge At WWE Backlash
Even if Randy Orton and Ciampa could just be ‘working’ the fans by themselves, the backstage news is The Boss isn’t impressed with it. The Wrestling Observer noted that Vince McMahon wasn’t happy about the Twitter exchange between The Viper and one of the top names of the NXT roster.
“The impression I was given is that Vince McMahon isn’t very happy about this. For those of you who may not know, there are rules and then there’s Vince. Vince hates it when guys or women or whatever do something that teases a match that he’s not gonna do, but if he starts booking something that doesn’t pay off it’s totally fine. There’s a different set of rules.” (courtesy wwfoldschool.com)
Bryan Alvarez noted on Wrestling Observer Live that those traded tweets weren’t done to set up a match between the two. Randy Orton and Ciampa may be doing this in private, or it may be a real exchange between the two. But it was not something that WWE creative would have set up. The tweets were not part of any creative plans even if Ciampa is heading to the main roster.
There’s no update yet on what WWE has planned for Ciampa after his loss to Karrion Kross on Sunday. Meanwhile, Randy Orton will face WWE Hall of Famer Edge at WWE Backlash pay-per-view on this Sunday.
