It was another eventful day at flushing meadows on Day four of the US Open 2017. Roger Federer survived another five set scare, this time against an experienced campaigner Mikhail Youzhny. Federer had also played a five setter in his first round match against a young American. Federer won the Wimbledon before coming into this tournament; however US Open has started in exactly the opposite style. Federer won the match 6-1, 6-7(3-7), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer won the first set convincingly, but Youzhny came back into the match by winning the next two sets putting Federer in a spot of bother. However, the master of the game came back into the match and took the next two sets to win the match.

Rafael Nadal also shrugged off his first set loss versus a 24-year-old Japanese Taro Daniels to take the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Taro Daniels made his presence felt in the first set as he broke Nadal in the ninth game of the set and led the set 5-4. He held on to his serve and won the set 6-4. This loss woke the number one seed up who then dominated the whole match. Daniels was clueless in the next three sets.

Nadal will face Leonardo Mayer of Argentina in the next match whereas Federer will play Feliciano Lopez of Spain in his third round match.

However, all was not at bay for the seeded players as number 15 seed Tomas Berdych bowed out of the tournament.

The women’s category was no different as number eight seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was knocked out of the open after number five seed Carolina Wozniacki got ousted on day three. American Madison Keys kept her campaign on course with straight sets win over T. Maria of Spain 6-3, 6-4.

The doubles campaign also began on day four. India’s Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won their respective first round matches with ease.
