Day 3 at the 2017 US Open has been full of drama with top seeds crashing out of the tournament in the second round.
The biggest upset being of the men’s fourth seed Alexander Zverev losing to unseeded Croatian Borna Coric 6-3, 5-7, 6-7(1-7), 6-7(4-7).
Zverev came into the tournament with a tag of the “next big thing” in tennis. Zverev won the Rogers cup beating the former number one Roger Federer in straight sets.

Zverev started the match on a good note with a dominant performance in the first set. However, little did he know that the Croatian would fight back to take the match in the next three sets. Although, Alexander’s younger brother Mischa Zverev was on course to the third round. Mischa had to sweat it out to take the match in five sets against the Frenchman Benoit Paire. Mischa won 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(3-7), 7-5.
Another big upset in the men’s single was the eighth seed Jo-Wilfred Tsonga bowing out to an 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Most astonishing point of the match was that the Canadian won the match in straight sets. He won 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(7-3).
Just like Alexander Zverev, Shapovalov is also considered a star in the making. He too had an exceptional run in the Rogers Cup, as he beat second seed Rafael Nadal in the tournament.

This wasn’t it; the women’s segment had some drama too. Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki also lost her second round match to Russian Ekaterina Makarova 2-6, 7-6(7-5), 6-1. Also, 11th seed Slovakian Dominica Cibulkova lost to American Sloane Stephens 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
On the other hand, Gabriel Muguruza cruised through to next round winning her match in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. Maria Sharapova too kept her US Open hopes alive. However, she dropped the first set and made a fantastic comeback to take the match 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-1 against an unseeded Timea Babos.
