Not even in his wildest of thoughts Mateus Fernandes would have sensed what was going to happen when he set his foot in the ring for another fight on Saturday. The 22-year old from Brazil suffered a brutal knockout in the ring and succumbed to the injury just four hours later. The tragic incident took place at the Remulos Fight Night event in Manaus, Brazil.

The night started well for Mateus Fernandes. He won the first two rounds before the fateful fight took place. He received two fatal blows by his opponent Obed Pereira on his head and neck. He soon collapsed and needed medical aid. The injured fighter was soon taken to Sao Raimundo Accident and Emergency but he suffered as many as four attacks and eventually lost the battle of life.

Romulo Lobo, organiser of the event, said there is no conclusive proof the punches to the head caused the fatality. He also said that there were allegations of Mateus Fernandes being on drugs before entering the ring.

“We are waiting on the autopsy report from the IML (Medical Legal Institute).

“There have been allegations that Mateus was using drugs before he entered the ring which may have contributed to his death.

“This has not been proven and we are waiting on the results of the examinations to find out exactly what happened and why he died,” he said.

Lobo also insisted that all the matches scheduled to happen on the night were halted after the tragic incident. The fights were then resumed after

The Remulos MMA event started this year and aims to discover new talent. The amateur fight has three rounds of three minutes with one minute to rest in between. Organisers of the event expressed their condolences to the family for their loss.
