Weekly Roundup: Pakistan win World Series, Madrid Off to a Winning Start in Champions League 2

The World XI team traveled to Pakistan to play a three-match T20 series in Lahore to help revive cricket in the country. It was the first time an international cricket was being played in Pakistan since the 2009 terrorist attacks on the Sri Lanka team. The first match was played on 12th September. Pakistan won the first match by 20 runs, thanks to a gutsy 86 run knock by Babar Azam.

In the second match, World XI made a comeback and won the match by seven wickets. However, Pakistan clinched the series by winning the third and final match by 33 runs and welcomed back cricket to Pakistan with a victory.

Australia’s Tour of India

India and Australia played the first ODI of the five-match series on Sunday which India went on to win by 26 runs via D/L method. In the rain affected the match, India batting first scored 281/7 in 50 overs. Pandya scored 87 and Dhoni scored 79 to help India reach a respectable total. In reply, Australia’s target was revised to 164 in 21 overs. They could only manage 137/9 in their quota of 21 overs. Pandya was adjudged the man of the match for his all-round performance as he picked up two crucial wickets as well. The second ODI will be played at Eden Gardens on Thursday.

Champions League

The most coveted tournament in Europe, the UEFA Champions League also began this past week. On day one, English clubs Chelsea and Manchester United won their opening match of the tournament without any hick ups. Barcelona and Bayern Munich also picked up easy wins in their opening match as both the teams won 3-0 to open up their tally.

Day two saw defending champions Real Madrid in action. Madrid won 3-0, with the help of a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo. Tottenham and Manchester City also won their respective matches. However, Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw against Sevilla.

English Premier League (Week 5)

One of the biggest matches of week 5 was between Chelsea and Arsenal. The match ended in a goalless draw, as strikers from both the sides failed to find the back of the net. This was the first time Arsenal managed a draw at Stamford Bridge in the last five matches between the two teams.

Both the Manchester clubs are joint leaders of the premier league after five games. City scored six goals against Watford courtesy a hat-trick by Sergio Aguero. For United, Lukaku was on the scoring sheet once again against his former club Everton as united won 4-0. Liverpool and Tottenham could only manage a draw in their respective matches.

Singapore Grand Prix

The 2017 Singapore Grand Prix was a very eventful race. As it poured down on race day in Singapore for the first time in 10 years, Sebastian Vettel had one of the worst races of his career as he couldn’t capitalize on the pole position and crashed out of the race on the very first lap. Lewis Hamilton went on to win the race and extended his lead over the second placed Vettel by 28 points. Ferrari had a poor outing as both its cars crashed out of the race in the same accident.

Korea Open Super series

PV Sindhu avenged her loss to Nozomi Okuhara in the 2017 World Championship, when she beat her in the final of Korea Open Super Series 22-20, 11-21, 21-18. This was Sindhu’s third Super Series title of her career.
