Day 3 of Wimbledon had one of the major setbacks as Kei Nishikori withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a calf injury. So it has been an easy walkover for the Colombian Santiago Giraldo who is through to the third round. Nishikori expressed his sadness but remained positive that there are many more years for me here at this tournament
Let’s look at the major results of day 3.
1. Novak Djokovic vs Jarkko Nieminen:
Jarkko Nieminen played his last match at the Wimbledon today but unfortunately to his liking he was against the world no 1, who managed to beat him in straight sets 6-4,6-2,6-3. Djokovic was mighty impressive with his groundstrokes hitting 38 winners and managed to make 50 of the 73 first serves in. Djokovic won 26 of the 30 points at the net which is highly impressive with just 13 unforced errors. It was a comfortable win for the world no 1 and for Nieminen he will retire during the end of the season.
2. Milos Raonic vs Tommy Hass:
Its Canada day today and the Canadian has given a huge present to his people by defeating Tommy Hass in four sets 6-0,6-2 6-7(5),7-6(4) and has advanced to the third round. The Canadian hit 29 aces with an highly impressive first serve percentage. Raonic was excellent with his ground strokes hitting 61 winners and converted 5 of his 11 break points.
3. Maria Sharapova vs Richel Hogenkamp:
Maria Sharapova was on a rampage as she defeated Hogenkamp in straight sets 6-3,6-1 and moves into the third round quite comfortably. Sharapova’s groundstrokes was too tough to handle for the Dutch women as she hit 23 winners converting 5 of her 11 break points. However, the one aspect where Sharapova has to improve is her second serve as she netted 8 double faults which is very high.
4. Marin Cilic vs Ricardas Berankis:
This match turned out to be the best match in the day 3 action at the Wimbledon. Cilic, who is seeded no 9 survived the scare against Berankis and came out on top and defeated him in 5 sets 6-3,4-6,7-6(6),4-6,7-5. Cilic was impressive with his serves and ground strokes. He managed to hit 28 aces and 66 winners and converted 3 of the 8 break points where as Berankis managed to convert 3 out of 11 attempts. Berankis double faulted at the most crucial moment, where Cilic was at the receiving end with 2 match points which was an unfortunate end to a great match.
5. Serena Williams vs Timea Babos:
Serena who has been in sublime form in 2015 has continued her winning run by defeating Babos in straight sets 6-4,6-1. Serena hit 12 aces and 23 winners and most importantly converted 4 of her 6 break points. Bados found Serena too hard to handle and was certainly out played by the world no 1. Overall, a complete performance from the world no 1 who is chasing her 6th Wimbledon title.
6. Stanislas Wawrinka vs Victor Estrella Burgos:
Wawrinnka, who has never looked back since the French Open triumph, makes a strong start to his Wimbledon campagin by dispathching Burgos in straight sets 6-3,6-4,7-5. The Swiss hit 15 aces and and 39 winners and was aggressive from the start. Wawrinka netted 6 double faults and had 29 unforced errors which is bound to happen with his aggressive game play. However, Wawrinka would love to make a big mark at this years Wimbledon with the form he is in,which he failed to do over the years.
