IPL 2020: The Rise Of Devdutt Padikkal Has Added Extra Spice In The Top Four Of RCB – Brad Hogg

Former Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Brad Hogg has praised Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) opener Devdutt Padikkal and has labelled him the player of the tournament so far.

Devdutt Padikkal was with RCB in 2019 for the whole season but didn’t get a match to showcase his mettle. But this season, he got the opportunity and successfully capitalized it. In just seven matches, the youngster has registered three half-centuries and has maintained a healthy strike rate of 126.56. Overall, he has amassed 243 runs. He will surely look to end up this season as one of the leading scorers for the team.

Most importantly, the 20-year-old batsman has taken off the burden from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers shoulder to score runs. He has stitched up a decent partnership with Aaron Finch to set a good base for other batters which has lead RCB’s great start of the tournament.

Taking to Twitter, Brad Hogg stated that Devdutt Padikkal had taken a huge weight off the shoulders of the three big guns in the RCB batting line-up.

Kohli and AB have been the core of the RCB’s batting order. The franchise had bought Aaron Finch ahead of this season to give them a good start. However, Devdutt came out as the star performer for them this season.

So, Brad Hogg tagged the opening batsman as the player of the tournament. At last, former Australian cricketer also concluded that RCB was a force to reckon with this year.

“The rise of Padikkal has added extra spice in the top four of RCB taking a huge weight off the shoulders of the three big guns Finch, Kohli, & De Villiers. Padikkal the pick of the tournament at the halfway mark,” Hogg tweeted.

After registering a victory against KKR on Monday, RCB has moved to the third position in the points table just behind Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. Their next match is against Kings XI Punjab on Thursday.

IPL 2020: Devdutt Padikkal Has Got Ability To Play For India – Brad Hogg

Brad Hogg, the former Australia left-arm unorthodox spinner has stated that Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal has got the ability to play for India in future. Brad Hogg was extremely impressed by the way Devdutt Padikkal has shown consistency in IPL 2020 so far, scoring three fifties from just four games.

Earlier in one of his videos, Brad Hogg had mentioned that Devdutt Padikkal’s weakness was the short ball bowled into his ribs and pacer Sheldon Cottrell had exploited that weakness in RCB’s game against Kings XI Punjab.

Brad Hogg: Devdutt Padikkal Has Made Adjustment In Playing Short Ball Well

However, the 49-year-old spinner noted that Devdutt Padikkal had made adjustments and has been playing the short ball well in the following games. Devdutt Padikkal is 6th in leading the run-scorers list in IPL 2020 so far with 174 runs in 4 matches averaging 43.50. He trails behind the likes of KL Rahul, Faf Du Plessis, Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and David Warner.

“It’s Devdutt Padikkal’s first IPL and he has made three fifties out of four innings. In the second game he really got tested by Cottrell with that short ball into the ribs. But I have seen him play a couple of pull shots against quality quick bowling after that. This kid has got the goods to play for India,” Brad Hogg said on his YouTube channel.

Brad Hogg was impressed by the way opener Devdutt Padikkal worked on his weakness after realizing that pacers from the other franchises would test him with the short ball. Devdutt Padikkal scored 56,1, 54 and 63 in the 4 matches. He failed to score runs against KXIP.

Devdutt Padikkal Pulled Jasprit Bumrah With Short Ball Which Shows He Is A Quick Thinker And Learner

Mumbai Indians’ Jasprit Bumrah, considered to be one of the premier fast T20 bowlers, was extremely well dealt with by Devdutt Padikkal in the game following the encounter against KXIP and Brad Hogg was full of praise for the 20-year-old.

“In the second game, Padikkal got tested by Cottrell by the short ball. The next game, he pulled Bumrah with the short ball to the body. That showed me that he is a quick thinker. He learns quickly. And that is probably the best batting performance that I have seen, his three fifties in four innings,” Brad Hogg said.

IPL 2020: Virat Kohli Did Not Have Any Ego When Devdutt Padikkal Was Playing Big Shots – Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra, former Indian cricketer, feels that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli was not hesitant while playing a supporting role to the youngster Devdutt Padikkal during their match-winning partnership against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday (October 3).

Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal set up 99 runs partnership to chase down 155 runs target against RR to register their third win of the tournament. RCB captain, who had struggled in the first three matches, finally, got back into the groove as he scored his first fifty of the IPL 2020.

While speaking on his YouTube Channel, Aakash Chopra warned other teams to now be cautious of Virat Kohli because he has regained his form.

“Virat Kohli is back in form. Once he is in form, everything will go well. All the teams need to be careful because the Virat Kohli storm is now going to hit the tournament.”

Talking about Virat Kohli’s 72* runs knock against RR, Aakash Chopra observed that Kohli had got more time to settle in the field because RCB’s bowler had restricted them to a reasonable score.

“In this game, he had time at his disposal which he needed. He got so much time because the RCB bowlers bowled well. But Kohli batted carefully in the beginning, which he could do because RCB was not chasing a huge total.”

The renowned commentator also said that Virat Kohli did not display any ego while playing second fiddle to Devdutt Padikkal as he took time to set himself in the field.

“Virat Kohli did not have any ego when Devdutt Padikkal was playing the big shots at the other end. He allowed Padikkal to go after the bowling while watching him from close quarters.”

Aakash Chopra further heaped praise on Virat Kohli’s understanding of the game. He said that the RCB captain knows how to handle situations while also not giving his wicket easily.

Virat Kohli understands what he needs to do and what his team requires the most. Virat Kohli’s quality is that when he scores he remains unbeaten as well.”

Meanwhile, RCB is at the no.2 position in the points table with six points after winning three matches out of four. They will play their next match against Delhi Capitals on Monday.

He’s a smart guy, he understands the game well and he responds to the feedback very well: Virat Kohli lauds Devdutt Padikkal

Virat Kohli was all praises for young lad Padikkal. He mentioned his flawless shots and his great balance. Kohli told he kept talking to Paddikal if he could bat longer for the team and said he responds to the feedback very well.

“I saw him play and told Simon (Katich) that this guy has got some serious talent because he’s got reach, a great eye, a great balance. It’s very difficult for the bowlers to continue bowling same lines and lengths against a leftie. The way he bats … very clean shots. You don’t feel like he is taking risks,” Kohli said.

“I just kept talking to him about building an innings. If he can bat longer for the team, it’s gonna benefit us. Today he carried from 40 to 65 odd which helped the team eventually. He’s a smart guy, he understands the game well and he responds to the feedback very well. The more he keeps learning, the better it is for RCB.” he added.

We are very happy with the performance: Virat Kohli on RCB’s win against RR

The skipper said everyone is very happy with the team performance and they bagged very important two points. He mentioned the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi was cooler than the Dubai International Stadium and they felt the breeze was an added luxury coming to Abu Dhabi.

“Very important two points. The kind of game we had last time around, it is very important to back that performance up. It was a bit warm, but coming from Dubai, this breeze was feeling like a luxury to us because we’ve nothing in Dubai.

“We were feeling more hot and humid there. Tough day, against a good team, two points in the bag on a tricky pitch, we are very happy with the performance,” Virat Kohli said.

Fiery Pollard completed his half-century in 20 balls with a sixer on the final ball of 18th over. In the final two overs, the defending champions had to score 31 runs to win that game.

Despite conceding a sixer, Navdeep Saini was very disciplined in the 19th over as he conceded 12 runs in that over. Mumbai Indians now had to score 19 runs in the final over.

After conceding two consecutive sixes on the third and fourth ball of the final over, Isuru Udana dismissed Ishan for 99 runs off 58 balls (2 fours and 9 sixes). Ishan-Pollard had the 119 runs partnership for the fifth wicket.

On the final ball, Mumbai Indians had to score five runs to win while Pollard managed to hit a four to tie the match. Pollard remained not out on 60 runs off just 24 balls (3 fours and 5 sixes).

Washington Sundar was definitely the bowler of the night as he had the bowling figures of 4-0-12-1 as he didn’t concede a boundary in his entire bowling spell. On the other hand, Isuru Udana was the only bowler for RCB to pick up more than one wicket in that innings as he had the bowling figures of 4-0-45-2.
