Indian Players Should Prioritise Playing For Nation Rather Than IPL, Says Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev pointed out a couple of reasons which resulted in India’s underwhelming performance at the T20 World Cup after New Zealand’s win against Afghanistan saw India being knocked out despite starting as favourites and title contenders for the showpiece event.

Legendary all-rounder and former World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev feels the BCCI and Indian cricket should start planning immediately for the next World Cup instead of leaving things for later.

Kapil Dev: India Should Start Planning Right Away For Next 2022 T20I World Cup

The year 2022 will stage the next T20 World Cup, and with India not able to qualify for the knockouts this year – the first time it has happened in eight ICC events – Kapil Dev pointed out a couple of reasons which resulted in India’s underwhelming performance at the ongoing T20 World Cup.

“It’s time to look at the future. You should start planning right away. It’s not that since the World Cup is over, the Indian team’s entire cricket is too. Go and plan. I just feel that there should have been some gap between IPL and the World Cup. But this is certainly there that our players today have a lot of exposure but they could not make the most of it,” Kapil said.

India exited the ongoing 2021 T20I World Cup after New Zealand beat Afghanistan to book the second semi-final berth from Group 2 on Sunday.

Virat Kohli’s team came into the tournament as hot favourites but let their future depend on other teams after big losses to rivals Pakistan, who were the first team to make the final four, and then the Kiwis. India crashed out of the T20 World Cup after New Zealand registered an 8-wicket win over Afghanistan to join Pakistan, England, and Australia in the semi-final.

Kapil Dev: Players Should Take Pride In Playing For Their Nation Instead Of Prioritizing IPL Over Country

Kapil Dev went on to make a big statement, saying that certain cricketers prefer playing the Indian Premier League and do not give importance to representing the country first, and explained that the BCCI needs to look into it. Although Kapil Dev insisted that he is not against the idea of cricketers playing franchise cricket, the order should be the other way round.

“When players prioritise IPL over playing for the country, we what can we say. Players should take pride in playing for their nation. I don’t know their financial conditions so can’t say much. But I feel that first in line should be the country’s team and then franchises.

“I’m not saying do not play cricket there (for the franchise), but the responsibility is now on the BCCI to plan its cricket better. To not repeat mistakes we committed in this tournament is the biggest learning for us,” added Kapil.

India thrashed Afghanistan and Scotland, but it was all too late, and now they find themselves out of the tournament even before their final game against Namibia on Monday. On the eve of their last league game in Group Two against minnows Namibia, Virat Kohli & Co. bowed out of a campaign in which they never really belonged.

The two losses to Pakistan and New Zealand -in which they got outplayed – had already put India on the exit path. From there, it was more of a battle pitching hope against hope, and it eventually all came crashing with New Zealand’s eight-wicket win over Afghanistan.

However, not managing to bring a single ICC Trophy back home between 2017 and 2021 will remain a barren patch in an otherwise pleasant run for this team. The same will stand true for Virat Kohli as he bows out of T20 captaincy and could also relinquish the same in the 50-over format very soon.

David Wiese Looking Forward Playing Against India In The T20I World Cup 2021

David Wiese, Namibia all-rounder is looking forward to playing against Virat Kohli’s India on Monday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Despite struggling in the Super 12 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Namibia has played competitive cricket throughout the campaign. David Wiese is confident they can ring a few surprises and end the tournament on a high.

David Wiese: Playing Against India Is Fantastic And Namibia Are Underdogs And Can Spring A Surprise

36-year-old David Wiese helped Namibia to qualify for the Super 12’s with a quickfire 66 against the Netherlands and followed it up with all-around performances. David Wiese is the only cricketer in the Nambia side to have played a T20 World Cup before.

Speaking about the upcoming clash against India in an exclusive chat, David Wiese said: “Playing against India is always fantastic. The support they have is amazing. Their players are the best in the world. And those are the kind of players you want to be playing against. A couple of guys can step up and impress the right people and it could work for them somewhere else. Life is all about opportunities. We are the underdogs but you never know.”

For India, it is a must-win game in their quest to qualify for the semifinals. However, for that to happen, Afghanistan will have to defeat New Zealand on Sunday.

David Wiese: Namibia Established As The Best Associate Team By Beating Scotland

Namibia defeated the likes of Ireland and Netherlands in the Qualifier before beating Scotland in the Super 12s. And David Wiese stressed they have managed to establish themselves in world cricket. Notably, Scotland performed exceptionally in the Round 1 stage and they were undefeated. However, entering the Super 12 stage they had lost 4 consecutive games.

Namibia beat Scotland before defeats against Afghanistan, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the Super 12 stage. Namibia finished second in the qualifying group with wins over Ireland and Netherlands.

“We knew we would be up against it. But it’s also exciting. Our first result in Round 1 itself against Sri Lanka was a bit of a baptism of fire. But we have established ourselves as the best Associate team by beating Scotland which is a great achievement for Namibian cricket,” David Wiese concluded.

Namibia will hope to maintain its form and come back stronger in the next edition of the ICC T20 World Cup.

Gerhard Erasmus led from the front with a well-crafted unbeaten fifty to guide debutants Namibia to a historic eight-wicket win over Ireland in the first round Group B match and qualification spot in Super 12s of the ICC T20 World Cup. Gerhard Erasmus (53 not out off 49 balls) guided Namibia’s chase of 126 in the company of David Wiese, who made an unbeaten 28.

David Wiese joined a sudden outflow of South African players into county cricket in the close season of 2016-17 when, at 31, he signed a three-year deal with Sussex, joining his compatriot Stiaan van Zyl. David Wiese had not played international cricket since March 2016 and shunned a call-up for a home T20 series against Sri Lanka in making his decision to go the Kolpak route.

He went to the World T20 in 2016, but after failing to nail down his spot, went down the Kolpak route. In 2021, David Wiese became eligible to play for Namibia based on ancestry as his father was born in the country. He was selected for their T20 World Cup squad, made his debut in the opening round of the tournament, and won two Player-of-the-Match awards in his first three matches, helping Namibia qualify for the Super 12s.

Kevin O’Brien Creates Record In Most T20I Sixes In A Calendar Year

The 35-year-old Ireland cricketer Kevin O’Brien put his name on the top of one T20I record book last Saturday (2nd November) during the third-place play-off of 2019 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier against Namibia.

It was the low-scoring encounter which Ireland won by 27 runs. After winning the toss, Ireland decided to bat first and Paul Stirling came to open that innings along with Kevin O’Brien.

Kevin O’Brien has hit 36 T20I sixes in 2019

In the third over of that innings, Kevin hit a sixer and created a new history. It was the 36th T20I sixer in 2019 for the right-handed Irish batsman, Kevin O’Brien. With that sixer, Kevin broke the previous record of 35 T20I sixes by Colin Munro (New Zealand) in 2018.

During the Group Stage of the ongoing tournament, Kevin O’Brien equalled the record of Colin Munro. On last Saturday, he surpassed that record.

However, Kevin only scored 17 runs off 14 balls in this match against Namibia. Only the opener Paul Stirling and the no.3 batsman Andy Balbirnie crossed the 20-run mark in that innings. While Stirling scored 25 runs, Balbirnie played the crucial knock of 46 runs. Ireland were all out on 135 runs in 19.1 overs.

Among the Namibia bowlers, JJ Smit (3/19) and Craig Williams (3/34) both got three wickets.

Namibia Creates History After Securing Their Maiden T20 World Cup Appearance

Namibia created history on Tuesday (29th October) night as they have secured their place for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, which will be their maiden T20 World Cup experience.

The African team Namibia have achieved this historic feat after reaching the semi-final of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019. On Tuesday, they beat Oman in the Qualifier 2 of this tournament.

After winning the toss, Namibia decided to bat first. They were once struggling on 69/5 in 12.1 overs. Then Craig Williams and JJ Smit handled that critical situation brilliantly and guided the team to the fighting total. They put the 83 runs partnership for the sixth wicket which hugely helped Namibia to cross the 150 runs mark.

Namibian spinners Bernard Scholtz (3/14) and Gerhard Erasmus (3/19) both picked up three wickets.

ICC Cricket World Cup: Top Five Lowest Totals In CWC History

Lowest completed total is one of those records which the teams never want to put their names in that book. When it happens in the big tournaments like the Cricket World Cup, it becomes more shameful for that cricket team.

In CWC history, while we have seen some big totals, especially in recent times, we have also experienced the poor lowest completed totals. Here we are briefly discussing the top five lowest completed totals in CWC history.

5. Scotland – 68 (31.3 overs) vs West Indies at Leicester on 27th May 1999

During 1999 Cricket World Cup, inexperienced Scotland side just surrendered in front of the West Indies bowling attack. After deciding to bat first, Scotland was all out for only 68 runs (31.3 overs). Apart from Gavin Hamilton (not out on 24 runs) and Asim Butt (11 runs), no other Scotland batsmen reached the double-digit marks. However, the second highest scorer in that innings was extras with 12 runs.

Among the Caribbean bowlers, Courtney Walsh (3/7) bagged three wickets while Sir Curtly Ambrose (2/8), Hendy Bryan (2/29) and Reon King (2/9) picked up two wickets each. Also, Phil Simmons (1/15) took one wicket in that innings.

West Indies chased down that tiny total in just 10.1 overs after losing two wickets. Opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul and the skipper Brian Lara remained not out on 30 and 25 runs respectively.
