Adelaide Strikers
Adelaide Strikers are one of the teams in Australia’s premier T20 competition – the Big Bash League (BBL). The franchise is based in the state of South Australia and represent Adelaide in the competition. The Strikers succeeded the Southern Redbacks, who played in the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competition.
The Strikers are currently coached by former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie and captained by Travis Head.
History:
2011-2012 season:
The Adelaide Strikers started their campaign in the inaugural season on a winning note, crushing Melbourne Renegades by 67 runs. However, it was not the precursor of the things that were to follow. For the rest of the season, the Strikers managed to win just one more match and ended the league table at sixth position.
2012-2013 season:
After the disappointing outing in the inaugural season, the Strikers started the brand-new season on a good note, beating last season’s finalists Perth Scorchers by 6 wickets. They lost the following game but bounced back quickly to win the next two. However, they could manage only one win from their last four games and missed out on top four because of net run-rate. The Strikers finished the season at fifth position with 4 wins from eight games.
2013-2014 season:
Adelaide Strikers started the brand new season, winning their second and third game after the first did not yield any result. However, they could not win any more game for the rest of the season and ended at the seventh spot with just 2 wins from eight games.
2014-2015 season:
The Strikers began the season with a bang, winning their first four games to all but seal their spot in the semifinal. They went on to win two more games to end the season at the top of the ladder with 6 wins in 8 games. However, they could not sustain the momentum in the semifinal and lost the game against Sydney Sixers by 67 runs.
2015-2016 season:
The Strikers made a strong start to their season once again. They won seven of the eight league games to storm into the semifinals at the top-placed team. However, they failed to deliver in the semifinal and ended up losing the game by 8 wickets to Sydney Thunder.
2016-2017 season:
After the top-of-the league finish in the previous season, hopes were high from the Strikers in 2016-17 season. However, they failed to live up to expectations. The season started with losses against Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers. The Strikers then managed to bounce back and win against Sydney Sixers only to lose again to Hobart Hurricanes. With just one win from the opening four games, the Strikers were well out of contention for a berth in the next round. They managed to win two more games but could only finish at sixth position.
2017-2018 season:
The seventh season of the competition saw the teams playing ten games instead of eight like the previous seasons. The Strikers started the season on a brilliant note, beating Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat in the first three games. overall, they lost three games and stormed into the semifinal as the second-best team of the league phase. In the semifinal, they beat Melbourne Renegades by one run before beating Hobart Hurricanes in the final to clinch their first BBL title.
