Markram was also a part of the Test squad which toured England but did not get an opportunity to play in any of the four Test matches. Markram was the captain of the South African under-19 which won the World Cup in 2014. He has also led the South African ‘A’ side in four-day tour matches. The South African selection committee has included the uncapped Andile Phelukwayo and Wayne Parnell. Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and all-rounder Chris Morris have been ruled out of the squad due to injuries.

Wiaan Mulder has also been included in the squad as a backup for Wayne Parnell will undergo a fitness Test next week. However, if Parnell clears the Test, Mulder shall return to join the Highveld Lions for their Sunfoil Series starting next Thursday.

On Markam’s inclusion to the team CSA’s selection committee convener Linda Zondi said, “Aiden has been knocking on the door for some time now, “He gained valuable insight into the Proteas team culture during the tour of England and he has shown maturity beyond his years, having captained South Africa to victory in the under-19 World Cup and as captain of the South Africa A four-day side. The inclusion of Andile and Wayne provides the necessary all-rounders to give options as concerns the balance of the starting XI. The selection of some younger players is part of the process to build for the future and at the same time maintain our hard core of experience,”

Aiden Markram Named as Titans Skipper for Sunfoil Series

South African domestic opening batsman Aiden Markram has been announced as the captain of Multiply Titans for the impending Sunfoil Series’ four-day set-up within the country.

“It’s a massive honour for me as a young player to lead the quality players that are amongst the Titans squad,” Markram was quoted as saying by Titans.

The tournament is comprised of six teams which will be home to six teams, as it would run through September 19 and to February 18.

The Sunfoil Series has as many as 24 four-day games scheduled, and Titans will take on Knights, in the final league game at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, next year.

The 22-year-old right-handed batsman Markram has replaced former South African and long-term skipper Henry Davids.

“I will always have the team’s interest at heart and as long as the team does well, I will be happy. The goal will be to win the Sunfoil Series,” Markram maintained.

Pertinently, the 37-year-old Stellenbosch-born, Henry, who has played nine Twenty20 internationals and two One-day internationals for the Proteas stepped down as Titans captain recently.

Owing to the long-term relation, Henry served as the captain of Titans for five seasons while witnessing the major improvement in the side throughout past many years.

On the other side, rising against the tide, the promising youngster Markram has tasted the success in his first-class set-up.

In the 2016-17 season, Markram impressed the cricketing fraternity in South Africa after scoring 565 runs at an average of 51.36.

“There’s plenty of experienced players in the changing room, so I will try and absorb as much information from them as possible to ensure the team goes in the right direction,” Markram asserted.

The right-handed Markram smashed two hundreds and two fifties respectively in the same season.

The reports suggested Markram will be part of the Titans’ Momentum One-Day Cup campaign as a vice-captain in the limited-over format and the side will be led by bowling all-rounder Albie Morkel, who has been a prominent figure in the Proteas national setup.

This tour game is an audition for him to retain his place in the Test side, as despite being selected for the four match series against England, he didn’t get a chance to make his debut.

Heino Kuhn was preferred over him, and with the senior player failing to make the opportunity count, there can be a chance when Markram might retain his place in the Test side and open the innings as well.

He recently led South Africa A in two unofficial Test match series against India A, which ended in a draw with both the team winning a game each. He scored a total of 194 runs in four innings, including two half-centuries. An impressive show in the practice match can guarantee him a place in playing XI for the Test series against the visitors. The practice game will be played from September 21 to 23.
