Delhi Capitals Skipper Rishabh Pant Rued 23 Runs Conceded By Marcus Stoinis In RCB’s Last Over

Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant rued the 23 runs conceded in the last over to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by Australian pace bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.

Even with leg-spinner Amit Mishra having one over left in the bank, DC skipper Rishabh Pant gave the final over to Stoinis who conceded three sixes and a four in the last over.

Delhi Capitals’ Rishabh Pant Felt Disappointed For Losing And Reasoned He Bowled Marcus Stoinis In Last Over For Spinners Not Getting Help

Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain would be rueing his decision to bowl Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis in the last over of the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s innings, even when leg spinner Amit Mishra had an over left, as AB de Villiers carted the Aussie pacer for 22 runs off the bat after Marcus Stoinis bowled a wide at the start.

“Obviously feeling disappointed, especially when you are on the losing side. They got 10-15 runs extra on this wicket,” said Rishabh Pant after the match before adding that he had to go for Stoinis in the last over since the spinners weren’t getting much help.

“We counted the overs really well but in the end, the spinners didn’t get the help we thought they would, that’s why I went with Stoinis for the last over,” added Pant.

RCB was 148/5 at the end of the 19th over, but Rishabh Pant had bowled out his three first-choice pacers – Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, and Avesh Khan – by then and had an over left of Amit Mishra – but instead, he went for the medium pace of Marcus Stonis.

AB de Villiers had reached his fifty by then and was ready to deliver an assault in the last over – he clattered 3 sixes off Marcus Stoinis taking RCB’s total to 171, which proved just enough for them to take the two points and climb to the top of the points table.

Rishabh Pant revealed that it wasn’t a calculation mistake to not complete Amit Mishra’s overs. But he thought the spinners were not getting much help from the conditions in Ahmedabad, and hence he turned to Marcus Stoinis over the experienced leg-spinner.

Delhi Capitals’ Skipper Rishabh Pant Praised Shimron Hetmyer Who Scored 53 Off 25 Balls For Taking Game To Last Over

DC batsman Shimron Hetmyer brought the team close to victory, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 25 balls (4 sixes and two fours). The 23-year-old skipper Rishabh Pant, however, is counting positives from their loss to RCB.

He praised Shimron Hetmyer, who returned to form as he smashed 53 off 25 balls, for keeping the chase alive till the last over, and bringing the Delhi Capitals back in the game when Rishabh Pant struggled to get going. The return of pacer Ishant Sharma from injury would be another major positive Rishabh Pant will take from the game.

“Hetty (Hetmyer) played brilliant innings. Because of him we got close to the target. In the last over, we were thinking whoever gets the ball has to finish the job for the team. In the end we were one run short.”

While Rishabh Pant smashed two fours off the final two deliveries and got to his fifty, DC fell short of a victory by 1 run, requiring 6 off the final delivery.

The left-handed Shimron Hetmyer reached his half-century off only 23 deliveries but Rishabh Pant and his unbeaten partnership of 78 runs for the 5th wicket went in vain. Delhi Capitals will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday at the same venue.

Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 171/5 (AB de Villiers 75*, Rajat Patidar 31; Avesh Khan 1/24 ) beat Delhi Capitals 170-4 (Rishabh Pant 58*, Shimron Hetmyer 53*; Harshal Patel 2/37) by 1 run.

Trio Of Axar Patel, Amit Mishra And Ravichandran Ashwin Playing Together Is A Dream Spin Attack, Says Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif, Delhi Capitals (DC) fielding coach has hinted at fielding a three-pronged spin attack for the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Axar Patel has joined the squad after successfully recovering from Covid-19 and will complete an already formidable lineup including leg-spinner Amit Mishra and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Mohammad Kaif: Axar Patel Is A Key Member Of The Delhi Capitals Squad

In a video uploaded by the Delhi Capitals franchise on Sunday, Mohammad Kaif praised Axar Patel for playing a key role in the side’s success last season when the side was runners-up. He added that the spin-troika playing together in Chennai would be a ‘dream’ bowling attack. Axar Patel picked 9 scalps in 15 games while Ravichandran Ashwin picked 13 in as many games and Amit Mishra picked 3 in 3 games before suffering an injury in IPL 2020.

“He’s been a key member [of the squad]. Last year, when we reached the finals Axar played a major role. He batted at No. 7, won the game against CSK at Sharjah. He was bowling beautifully, I think. Axar, [Amit] Mishra and [Ravichandran] Ashwin playing together is going to be a dream spin-bowling attack,” said Mohammad Kaif.

Mohammad Kaif picked SRH’s premier leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, as the key adversary as he has been economical and picked crucial scalps in the last few seasons. The fielding coach, however, also showed confidence in DC’s bowlers, pointing to spinner Amit Mishra and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who were instrumental in the team’s win against the Mumbai Indians.

“Definitely! How we play Rashid Khan is going to be key on this pitch. And we have the bowlers who can defend the target. We have Amit Mishra who was the man of the match in the last game. He bowled beautifully.

“We have got the fast bowlers as well. The way [Marcus] Stoinis bowled in the last game with the new ball… was a crucial factor,” added Mohammad Kaif.

Mohammad Kaif: Delhi Has An Experienced Batting Lineup Compared To SRH

Mohammad Kaif also compared both teams’ batting lineups. He stated that DC’s batters are more experienced and the presence of in-form Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith gives them an edge. Mohammad Kaif also lauded new skipper Rishabh Pant for his poised leadership in difficult conditions.

“I think it’s going to be a good game because they won the last game, SRH. We have played 4, won 3, so we have also got the momentum going. I think batting has been tough on this pitch. Hopefully, we have an experienced lineup compared to SRH. We have Shikhar [Dhawan], he has been batting really well.

“We have Smithy [Steve Smith] who played well in the last game. I think these are bowling-friendly conditions and batting is going to be a bit harder which all the teams have found out… And the way Rishabh [Pant] has been captaining on a slow and turning pitch, he looked in control. That’s a great sign,” signed off Mohammad Kaif.

Shikhar Dhawan is the leading run-scorer in IPL 2021 with 231 runs in 4 games averaging 57.75 while Prithvi Shaw has scored 113 runs averaging 28.25. Steve Smith has scored 42 runs in 2 games. Rishabh Pant has amassed 88 runs while newcomer Lalit Yadav has contributed with 54 runs.

Marcus Stoinis has managed 41 runs. Among bowlers, Avesh Khan has picked 8 scalps while Chris Woakes has picked 5 scalps. Amit Mishra has picked 4 scalps in only 2 appearances while pacer Kagiso Rabada has 4 scalps in 3 games.

Delhi Capitals’ batting unit clicked against CSK where the team successfully chased 189 while they lost to Rajasthan Royals. They beat Punjab Kings chasing 196 as Shikhar Dhawan scored 92 while they beat Mumbai Indians where Amit Mishra picked 4 scalps.

IPL 2021: Axar Patel Rejoins Delhi Capitals After Being Back To Full Fitness

Axar Patel, who tested positive in early April, rejoined the Delhi Capitals on Thursday in Chennai. He is back to full fitness and participated in his first-team training session on Friday.

After spending nearly three weeks in a medical care facility in Mumbai, Delhi Capitals allrounder Axar Patel has bounced back from Covid-19.

Axar Patel Terms Getting Back In Delhi Capitals Camp Is The Best Moment In His Life After A Successful Test Debut

“I’m getting sheer joy just by seeing people,” said Axar Patel said in a video posted by his franchise Delhi Capitals on Friday, expressing his joy and relief at recovering from dreaded Covid-19 which has enveloped India with a vicious second wave.

“This is the best moment in my life after my Test debut,” Patel said. “I was alone in my room for 20 days and I didn’t have anything to do. I was watching the matches and one good thing was that our team won most of the matches, so I got even more motivated to re-join the side. We are just focusing on how my body is reacting to training sessions.”

Axar Patel had originally checked into the Delhi Capitals’ team hotel on March 28 in Mumbai, where the previous season IPL 2020’s runners-up played their first three matches this season.

While he had entered the bubble with a negative test report, on April 3 the Delhi Capitals issued a media statement, saying Axar Patel’s second test at the team hotel had come out positive. He was immediately moved to a medical facility where he was isolated in his own room.

Delhi Capitals Had Roped In Shams Mulani For Short Time Covid-19 Replacement For Axar Patel

In his absence, the Delhi Capitals had roped in Shams Mulani, a left-arm-finger spin-bowling allrounder from Mumbai, as a temporary like-for-like replacement for Axar Patel.

Axar Patel’s all-around skills offer the Capitals a good balance as he can provide depth in the batting, too. Along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra, the Capitals, who are currently third on the points table, fielded uncapped Indian allrounder Lalit Yadav in their last two matches.

However, it is likely the franchise will allow Axar Patel a bit more time to recover and train considering he has not played since March 12, in the first T20I against England. The Delhi Capitals play their next game on April 25 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai.

Axar Patel, who had missed the first Test against England which India lost by 227 runs due to an injury, took a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the second Test. The left-arm spinner Axar Patel spun a web and bagged two five-wicket hauls in the third Test, thus helping India register a 10-wicket win inside two days.

And with a five-for in the second innings of the fourth Test, the left-arm spinner took his series tally to 27 wickets. In his Test series against England, he picked 27 scalps to finish behind Ravichandran Ashwin (32) in the leading wicket-takers list.

Axar Patel was the 2nd player after Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Nitish Rana to test positive for the virus. RCB’s Devdutt Padikkal had also missed the team’s first match against MI but returned to play the next matches. He struck his first ton against Rajasthan Royals the other night.

He picked 9 scalps in 15 games in IPL 2020 at UAE but the fact that the IPL series is in India this time, he may bag more wickets for Indian subcontinent pitches offer more turn and aid spinners.

Amit Mishra Not Focused On Breaking Lasith Malinga’s IPL Record Of Maximum 170 Scalps

Amit Mishra, Delhi Capitals leg-spinner, who took his all-time tally to 164 wickets after a match-winning spell against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, said he is not focussed on breaking Lasith Malinga’s record for the most wickets by a bowler in the IPL.

Amit Mishra has been one of the unsung heroes of the Indian Premier League. The 38-year-old spinner has picked up 164 wickets in 152 matches in the IPL and is just 7 wickets away from breaking Lasith Malinga’s all-time record for the most wickets in the T20 league.

Amit Mishra Picked 4 Scalps Including Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, And Ishan Kishan

Only thrice has Amit Mishra picked up less than 10 wickets in a season in the IPL. The veteran leg-spinner showcased on Tuesday that he still has the goods to single-handedly win his team high-pressure IPL matches. Playing for the Delhi Capitals, the leg-spinner rattled Mumbai Indians’ batting unit with a match-winning spell of 4 for 24.

Amit Mishra was nearly unplayable as he troubled the Mumbai Indians batsmen with his spin-bowling prowess. The leg-spinner got the big wicket of a well-set Rohit Sharma by beating him with flight at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where batsmen found it hard to score runs.

Amit Mishra then picked up Hardik Pandya and trapped Kieron Pollard LBW with a wrong’un that the West Indies captain failed to pick. He then wrapped things up by taking Ishan Kishan’s wicket as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 137 for 9 in their quota of 20 overs.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra has now dismissed Rohit Sharma a total of 7-times in IPL. After his spell of 4/24, Amit Mishra now leads the list of bowlers with the most 4+ wicket hauls in IPL history. Amit Mishra pocketed the man of the match award for the 12th time in IPL – the most amongst all IPL bowlers.

Amit Mishra Isn’t Focussed On Breaking Lasith Malinga’s Record Of Most IPL Scalps

Speaking to Prithvi Shaw after the match-winning spell, the Delhi Capitals spinner said he is not focused on breaking Lasith Malinga’s record but helping the Delhi Capitals win matches in the ongoing IPL season. Lasith Malinga, with 170 wickets, is on top of the wicket-takers list but the former Mumbai Indians pacer retired from franchise cricket earlier this year.

Amit Mishra got Rohit Sharma out for the 7th time in IPL – a joint record for a bowler for maximum dismissals against a particular batsman. The Mumbai Indians captain tried to skip down the track and hit Amit Mishra into the stands but the leg-spinner bowled it wide and had Rohit Sharma caught at long-on by  Steve Smith.

Speaking about his dominance over Rohit, Mishra added: “I try to keep the ball away from his hitting zones and take the pace off, which will force him to go against his strengths. I also try to beat him with flight and I have been successful thus far.”

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga on Wednesday announced retirement from franchise cricket after Mumbai Indians released him ahead of the Indian Premier League 2021. Lasith Malinga, who has played a staggering 122 IPL matches, has 170 wickets to his credit, the highest in the cash-rich league, with the best bowling figures of 5/13. The 37-year-old pacer is known for his toe-crushing yorkers.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 138/4 (Shikhar Dhawan 45, Steve Smith 33; Kieron Pollard 1/9) beat Mumbai Indians 137/9 (Rohit Sharma 44, Ishan Kishan 26; Amit Mishra 4/24) by 6 wickets.

Amit Mishra Asked For A Salary Hike After 1st Hat Trick In IPL 2008: Virender Sehwag

Amit Mishra had asked for a salary hike after claiming his first hat-trick in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Virender Sehwag recalled the incident as his comments came after Amit Mishra led Delhi Capitals to victory against Mumbai Indians in Chennai on Tuesday.

After Amit Mishra registered a match-winning performance for his side Delhi Capitals in an IPL 2021 match against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, former India opener Virender Sehwag narrated an incident when the leg-spinner had asked for a ‘salary hike’ after claiming his first-ever hat-trick in the Indian Premier League back in 2008.

Amit Mishra Wanted A Salary Hike After Claiming His 1st Hat-Trick: Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag’s comments came after Amit Mishra claimed a four-wicket haul to restrict the defending champions to a paltry 137/9 in 20 overs. In reply, Rishabh Pant & Co registered an easy 6-wicket win which came after five defeats in a row against the Mumbai-based franchise.

Amit Mishra who holds the record for claiming most hat-tricks in the IPL – 3 – had picked up three in a row in the inaugural edition of the league in 2008 against Deccan Chargers while representing Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). Virender Sehwag was the then captain of the Delhi side.

“He is [Amit Mishra] a kind of guy who is very calm and talks gently to everybody. He gets to mingle with everyone pretty quickly. So that’s why he becomes the favourite of his teammates. When he gets beaten, other players feel for him. And when takes wickets, all are happy for him. I remember when he claimed his first hat-trick.”

“I asked him what do you want and he said ‘Viru Bhai, please get my salary increased.’ Now, I feel, he would be getting that much amount of money that he won’t ask for a raise even after getting another hat-trick,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Amit Mishra with 164 scalps in 152 IPL games is the 2nd highest wicket-taker in IPL history and is only 6 scalps short of retired pacer Lasith Malinga who has 170 scalps in 122 games.

Mumbai eventually ended with just 137 for 9, with Amit Mishra’s strikes ensuring the Capitals stifled the defending champions. Amit Mishra wreaked havoc and dismantled the batting order removing Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan.

Virender Sehwag: Amit Mishra Accepts Challenges Irrespective Of Opposition Batsmen

It was Amit Mishra’s comeback game as he was dropped for two straight encounters after playing DC’s tournament opener against Chennai Super Kings. His 4-24 is the best bowling figure by a Delhi bowler against MI. Virender Sehwag further explained why he is considered one of the best bowlers in the league.

“Mishra seemed nervous during his over in powerplay. He got hit by Suryakumar Yadav hit for boundaries over covers. But when the powerplay ended, Mishra Ji also came back strong because once the field is spread, he also feels that he can bowl at a normal pace on which the batters have to take the risk.”

“He bowled really well. That’s why he is one of the best bowlers of this tournament. He has the most wickets as a spinner. Had Rohit Sharma played his normal game against him, he could have scored 60-70 runs easily,” Sehwag added.

The former cricketer further spoke about Amit Mishra getting Hardik Pandya for a duck. He said that the leg-spinner doesn’t hesitate in facing tough challenges.

“Amit Mishra knew that when Hardik Pandya plays spin, he simply attacks. If gets the ball in his area, he looks to smash it. If it’s his day, he whacks a maximum, or else he will get out. So, Mishra is wise enough to judge if a batsman like Pandya goes after him, who will he bowl or what variation does he need to make. Mishra accepts challenges no matter who the batsman he is bowling at,” Virender Sehwag said.

After his spell of 4/24, Amit Mishra now leads the list of bowlers with the most 4+ wicket hauls in IPL history. Amit Mishra pocketed the man of the match award for the stifling spell against defending champions Mumbai. This was his 12th such award in IPL history – the most amongst all IPL bowlers. Three other bowlers have eight – Harbhajan Singh, Rashid Khan, and Umesh Yadav.

Leg spinner Amit Mishra, with 164-wickets, is now No.2 on the list of most wickets in IPL history. The veteran is closing the gap on Lasith Malinga real quick. The Sri Lankan sits pretty atop this list with 170 IPL wickets. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra has now dismissed Rohit Sharma a total of 7-times in IPL. He now joins Zaheer Khan and Sandeep Sharma in this rather unique list.

Zaheer Khan has dismissed MS Dhoni 7-times while Sandeep Sharma has sent back Virat Kohli a total of 7-times in the IPL as well. In all the 7-times that Rohit Sharma has been dismissed by Amit Mishra, the batsman had faced at least 17-balls before the leg-spinner was called upon to bowl.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 138/4 (Shikhar Dhawan 45, Steve Smith 33; Kieron Pollard 1/9) beat Mumbai Indians 137/9 (Rohit Sharma 44, Ishan Kishan 26; Amit Mishra 4/24) by 6 wickets.

Rohit Sharma, MI skipper not only featured in the team’s loss to Delhi Capitals in the match but was fined Rs. 12 Lakh too for a slow over-rate offence.

The clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals didn’t prove to be a very fruitful one for the former as they not only lost the match by six wickets but also skipper Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate.

Rohit Sharma, MI Skipper Fined Rs. 12 Lakh For Slow Over Rate As Amit Mishra’s 4/24 Helps DC Win

Amit Mishra scalped four important wickets while Shikhar Dhawan led from the top with the bat to get DC over the line against MI.

An IPL media advisory read, “Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 20.”

“As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Mr. Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakh.”

Meanwhile, leg-spinner Amit Mishra’s four wickets for 24 runs helped Delhi Capitals (DC) ease to a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in an Indian Premier League match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday night.

The win put DC second on the points table, just behind Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). While both teams have six points, RCB is ahead on net run rate and has played one match less.

Shikhar Dhawan Scores 45 As Delhi Wins By 6 Wickets

Amit Mishra’s haul helped DC restrict MI to 137/9 in 20 overs. It was a total that was too low for MI to defend as Shikhar Dhawan’s 45 (42 balls, 5x4s, 1×6) and Steve Smith’s 33 (29 balls, 4x4s) stabilized DC innings after the early loss of Prithvi Shaw.

Rohit Sharma had a decent outing with the bat though, as he struck 44 from just 30 balls, and also hit three sixes in his innings. Mumbai with another loss, are now fourth on the points table, while Delhi has progressed to the second.

Amit Mishra‘s 4 for 24 was the best bowling figure for a Delhi Capitals bowler against Mumbai in IPL history, and he ran rings around a line-up that had been 67 for 1, going at nearly ten per over.

Amit Mishra with 164 scalps in 152 IPL games is the 2nd highest wicket-taker in IPL history and is only 6 scalps short of retired pacer Lasith Malinga who has 170 scalps in 122 games.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 138/4 (Shikhar Dhawan 45, Steve Smith 33; Kieron Pollard 1/9) beat Mumbai Indians 137/9 (Rohit Sharma 44, Ishan Kishan 26; Amit Mishra 4/24) by 6 wickets.

IPL 2021: Captaincy Is Going Great With Ricky Ponting In Our Management, Says Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals skipper gave an insight into his leadership style and how he has benefitted from having Ricky Ponting as the head coach after Delhi Capitals registered a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra spun a web over Mumbai Indians before Shikhar Dhawan and Steve Smith played knocks of 45 and 33 respectively as Delhi Capitals registered a win here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. Amit Mishra had picked four wickets to help Delhi Capitals restrict Mumbai Indians to 137/9.

Rishabh Pant Credits Seniors And Ricky Ponting For Lifting Pressure Off Him As Delhi Skipper

Delhi Capitals, who were chasing a target of 138, made two changes from the previous game, bringing in Shimron Hetmyer and Amit Mishra.

“I think, yes, as a wicketkeeper I keep on reading the game and it helps me a lot. With seniors around and Ricky Ponting in our management, I think my captaincy is going great,” said Rishabh Pant while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.

Delhi played its first three games in Mumbai and then the side has moved to Chennai to play its next set of matches.

When asked about the difficulty of traveling in such times, Rishabh Pant said: “I think it’s slightly challenging because of Covid. But as a team, we are not focusing on outside things. BCCI has done really well to give us a good bubble and traveling thing. We are focusing more on cricket.”

Amit Mishra scalped four important wickets while Shikhar Dhawan led from the top with the bat to get DC over the line against MI.  MI opted to bowl first on a dry wicket in Chennai and made one change – Jayant Yadav replaced Adam Milne in the playing XI. With this win, Rishabh Pant’s Delhi is now in 2nd spot with 3 wins from 4 matches having 6 points.

Amit Mishra Picks 4 Scalps Including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, And Ishan Kishan To Be Awarded, MOM

Marcus Stoinis handled the new ball responsibility very well and got an early wicket for DC after Quinton de Kock edged one to the wicketkeeper and walked back to the pavilion. But the MI skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav backed their aggression and took on Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling variations.

They further attacked Kagiso Rabada’s pace and brought up 14 runs off the fifth over. MI was 55-1 at the end of the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav nicked one to Rishabh Pant and Avesh Khan broke the 58-run stand, scalping his first wicket.

Amit Mishra came in to bowl the ninth over that started MI’s collapse. The leg-spinner picked the well-settled Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in one over after both right-handers holed out to Steve Smith at long-on.

Amit Mishra scalped his third wicket, trapping Kieron Pollard before the wickets for 2. Amit Mishra bagged his fourth wicket of the innings and brought an end to Ishan Kishan’s stay in the crease.

Shikhar Dhawan continues to be the Delhi Capitals’ premier batsman, guiding the tricky chase with a 42-ball 45. Amit Mishra‘s 4 for 24 was the best bowling figure for a Delhi Capitals bowler against Mumbai in IPL history, and he ran rings around a line-up that had been 67 for 1, going at nearly ten per over. Mumbai eventually ended with just 137 for 9, with Amit Mishra’s strikes ensuring the Capitals stifled the defending champions.

Delhi Capitals needed 15 runs in the last two overs and batsmen Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav ensured the side didn’t falter at the end. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah’s two no-balls in the penultimate over made the job a lot easier for the batsmen.

Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant failed to score much but Shikhar Dhawan, Steve Smith, Lalit Yadav, and Shimron Hetmyer ensured Delhi’s victory by 6 wickets.

“As a player, you do not focus much on match-ups. Every day is a new day, I had to go for my shots because we were chasing, so you need to focus more on scenarios as compared to matchups,” said Pant.

“We were thinking to bat first also so I do not think Rohit’s decision to bat first was a bad one,” he added.

Mumbai Indians were cruising towards a mammoth total having scored 55 runs in the first six overs against Delhi but Amit Mishra wreaked havoc and dismantled the batting order removing Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 138/4 (Shikhar Dhawan 45, Steve Smith 33; Kieron Pollard 1/9) beat Mumbai Indians 137/9 (Rohit Sharma 44, Ishan Kishan 26; Amit Mishra 4/24) by 6 wickets.

IPL 2021: Ishant Sharma Fit To Play For Delhi Capitals

Ishant Sharma, Delhi Capitals pacer is fit to play in the remainder of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

In what comes as a huge boost for the previous season’s runners-up Delhi Capitals ahead of the game against defending champions Mumbai Indians, pacer Ishant Sharma has been cleared to play in the remainder of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Ishant Sharma Was Struggling With A Heel Niggle But Is Fit Now

Speaking to ANI, sources in the DC camp said that while Ishant Sharma was struggling with a heel niggle, he is now fit and ready to take the field.

“He was struggling with a heel niggle, but he is good to go now. Had to take it slow and easy as we have a long road ahead of us and he is an integral part of the bowling attack,” the source explained.

While Delhi has been impressive with two wins from three games, the fast bowlers haven’t been in top form with both Kagiso Rabada and Lukman Meriwala proving to be expensive in the last game against Punjab Kings.

In fact, Avesh Khan has been the only pacer who has impressed with his variations in all the games so far. And going into the game against defending champions Mumbai Indians, the DC unit will be happy to have Ishant Sharma available to play.

Ishant Sharma had played only 1 IPL match in 2020 after which he was sidelined with injury before recovering and playing against England in Tests after missing the Australia tour.

Shikhar Dhawan: Mumbai Indians Know Conditions In Chennai Well Having Played A Few Games There

Coming to the MI encounter, DC opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan reckons that the challenge for his side would be to switch on mentally on the Chennai wicket. Delhi Capitals has played all its three games at Wankhede Stadium and the side would now play its next two games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

“MI has played 2-3 three over there before so they know the conditions, for us the challenge will be to switch on mentally according to the wicket and prepare our plan and just go and implement it and play with a positive mindset, aggression and look to win the game,” said Dhawan in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of Delhi Capitals.

The Delhi Capitals qualified for the finals first time in IPL 2020 after twelve years of the start of this tournament and qualified for the IPL playoffs in 2019 for the first time in seven years.

While Delhi Capitals came into the match after beating Punjab Kings by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai has recorded back-to-back victories by defending low totals in Chennai, something a formidable opponent like DC may not offer.

For Delhi Capitals, the biggest positive has been the form of Shikhar Dhawan, who is the leading scorer so far in the tournament with 186 runs. Shikhar Dhawan and young Prithvi Shaw form a lethal opening combination, but the Mumbaikar needs to convert his starts into big scores.

Their pace attack is led by South African Kagiso Rabada and Chris Woakes, and the two have been impressive so far. They have an additional option in Anrich Nortje, who has also joined the squad.

Delhi played four pacers in the game against Punjab, but in Chennai, they could play more spinners as the track is conducive for the slower bowlers. They have options in the experienced Amit Mishra, Pravin Dubey, and new recruit Shams Mulani, who can complement Ravichandran Ashwin.

Mumbai Indians Predicted XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, James Neesham, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Delhi Capitals Predicted XI: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Steve Smith, Rishabh Pant (c&wk), Marcus Stoinis, Ravichandran Ashwin, Chris Woakes, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra

IPL 2021: Ricky Ponting Admits Ravichandran Ashwin Not Bowling 4th Over Was ‘A Mistake’

Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals (DC) coach has lamented the fact that despite bowling beautifully, Ravichandran Ashwin didn’t finish his quota of four overs in the side’s loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This was the seventh match of IPL 2021.

Chasing 149, RR had lost half their side for 42 before the halfway mark. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was hammered for 47 off his four overs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in DC’s first game this season, bowled tight lines this time around and conceded only 14 runs from his 3 overs on Thursday but wasn’t called upon to bowl the 4th over.

Ricky Ponting Admits Ravichandran Ashwin Not Bowling His Full Quota A Mistake On Delhi Capitals’ Behalf

But the ace off-spinner couldn’t complete his quota of four overs as RR batsmen Chris Morris and David Miller led RR’s resurgence, with DC bowlers struggling towards the death.

Admitting Ravichandran Ashwin not completing his four overs was a mistake on the Rishabh Pant-led DC’s behalf, Ricky Ponting told the press: “Certainly, we will talk about this when we get together as a team. He (Ashwin) had bowled beautifully, bowling 3-0-14-0 and didn’t concede a boundary.”

“He didn’t have a good first game, and he really worked hard in the past few days and adjusted to get things right in this game. He bowled beautifully tonight, and it (not bowling his full quota) was a mistake on our behalf, something we will be talking about as a team later on,” said Ricky Ponting.

Ricky Ponting feels that spinner Ravichandran Ashwin not completing his four overs is a ‘mistake on their behalf’ despite just giving 14 runs in his three overs.

RR pacer MOM Jaydev Unadkat returned with figures of 3/15 in 4 overs which included wickets of openers Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, and Ajinkya Rahane. Rishabh Pant’s 51 helped Delhi reach 147/8.

Rajasthan was reduced to 42/5 but David Miller and Chris Morris led a fightback. The duo of David Miller (62 off 43) and Chris Morris (36* off 18) had enabled Rajasthan to revive the chase and clinch the game by three wickets with two balls remaining.

Ravichandran Ashwin Is India’s 3rd Highest Wicket Taker In T20s After Piyush Chawla And Amit Mishra

Ravichandran Ashwin had a great 2020-21 season for India in Test cricket. He was vital to India’s wins in Australia and later at home against England. Having lost his place in India’s limited-overs setup, the champion spinner is eyeing a return to India’s T20I side ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup. In February 2021, he made it clear that he’s realistically aiming to return to the T20I side.

With 249 T20 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin is India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the format after Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra. His economy rate of 6.94 in T20s is among the best in the world. Even in T20Is, his economy rate is below seven. For Delhi to win their maiden IPL this year, a lot will depend on Ravichandran Ashwin’s showing in the tournament.

Brief Scores:  Rajasthan Royals 150/7 (David Miller 62, Chris Morris 36*; Avesh Khan 3/32) beat Delhi Capitals 147/8 (Rishabh Pant 51, Tom Curran 21; Jaydev Unadkat 3/15) by 3 wickets.

IPL 2021: Ravichandran Ashwin Doesn’t Bowl Off Spin In T20s Unlike Tests, Says Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar believes Ravichandran Ashwin’s insistence on using too many variations in white-ball cricket is leading to his downfall. Sanjay Manjrekar said on Sunday that the off-spinner should put more trust in his stock delivery in the shorter formats as he does in Test matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin had a fairly expensive outing against Chennai Super Kings in the 2nd match of ongoing IPL 2021. He picked up the solitary wicket of Moeen Ali but got hit for 47 runs in his four overs, the second-worst economy rate in the match for his team.

Sanjay Manjrekar: Ravichandran Ashwin Hardly Bowls The Off-Spin In White Ball T20 Cricket

The off-spinner was seen trying several variations during the match, including a Kedar Jadhav-style round-arm delivery. However, none of them seemed to work against the likes of Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina who smashed him for four boundaries and as many sixes.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Sanjay Manjrekar compared Ravichandran Ashwin with leg-spinner Amit Mishra, pointing out that there wasn’t much change in Amit Mishra’s bowling across formats. The former batsman added that Ravichandran Ashwin tries to ‘escape punishment’ with his variations and in turn impedes his own strengths.

“For Amit Mishra, there isn’t much change in how he bowls in Test and T20 cricket. He sticks to his strength and his intent is to get the ball to turn.

“Ashwin doesn’t bowl the off-spinner! He hardly bowls the off-spinner in white-ball cricket. In Test matches, that’s his main delivery. In white-ball cricket, there’s a lot of other stuff, the pause and the round-arm delivery and stuff like that which I don’t really like too much.”

“I think Ashwin, when he gets into this white-ball circle, he’s only thinking about not getting hit and he thinks the only way to escape punishment is to have all these kinds of variations and he goes away from his main strength which is him being this wonderful off-spinner.

“So in return, you don’t get much return off the pitch because he’s not bowling any turning deliveries,” said Sanjay Manjrekar.

Sanjay Manjrekar:  Ravichandran Ashwin Of Test matches Is Not Who One See In White Ball Cricket But Both Suresh Raina And Moeen Ali Played Some Superb Shots

Speaking further on the subject, Sanjay Manjrekar pointed to the recent demands from fans and the cricket fraternity to include Ravichandran Ashwin in India’s limited-overs squads. Sanjay Manjrekar argued that Ravichandran Ashwin’s skills in the shorter formats are inferior to his prowess in the longest format.

“It wasn’t a case of Ashwin bowling badly. I think both Raina and Moeen played some superb shots that put him off his length, they hit the good balls for sixes. But this is the thing with Ashwin that we saw in the first game… a lot of people believe that he should be part of the white-ball format for India but the Ashwin that you see in Test matches is not who you see in white-ball cricket,” said Sanjay Manjrekar.

Ravichandran Ashwin registered figures of 1/47 while Tom Curran had figures of 1/40. Chris Woakes and Avesh Khan picked 2 scalps apiece and conceded only 41 runs in 8 overs between them. The Delhi Capitals will play their next game on April 15 against the Rajasthan Royals.
