Jay Shah Appointed Or Elected President Of Asian Cricket Council

On the other hand, Indian cricket board secretary Jay Shah was on Saturday “appointed” president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) following its virtual AGM held on Saturday. He will take over from Nazmul Hassan who is also president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

“Shah, 32, is the youngest administrator to be appointed as the ACC president,” said a statement from the BCCI.

Interestingly, the BCCI statement mentioned at four places that Jay Shah was “appointed” ACC president while at two places it said that he was “elected”.

“I accept this honour and I thank my esteemed colleagues at the BCCI for nominating me and considering me worthy of this prestigious position. Formed with a view to organise, develop and promote the sport in the region, the ACC has steadily grown in stature.

“The ACC continues to foster healthy rivalry among some of the biggest cricket playing nations while it also takes the sport deeper into the smaller pockets. We must remain committed to this cause and ensure there is an all-round development in the region,” Shah said in the same statement.

Sourav Ganguly became BCCI president in October 2019 and under him, IPL 2020 was successfully carried out in UAE besides the first pink-ball Test against Bangladesh at Kolkata. He spent six days in the Woodland hospital. He was hospitalized at 1 pm on January 2 and was discharged on January 7 morning. He was supposed to be discharged on January 6 but it was postponed by a day after he expressed his desire to stay at the hospital for one more day.

Under-19 Asia Cup Postponed To Next Year

The Under-19 Asia Cup, which was scheduled in November this year, has been postponed to 2021 due to the prevailing coronavirus pandemic. The tournament was set to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates, where currently the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is being hosted.

As per Cricbuzz, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official informed about the postponement of the event to next year. Before scraping the tournament, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had urged member boards to give their opinion. However, any fixed date has not been proclaimed for the hosting U-19 Asia Cup next year.

“The Under-19 Asia Cup [that was expected to be played in November 2020] has been postponed and will be played in 2021,” BCB’s game development manager AEM Kawsar confirmed to Cricbuzz. “ACC is looking for a suitable date to host the tournament next year,” he said.

BCB official also informed that they formed a new Under-19 squad and were expecting U-19 Asia Cup to be their first platform to perform, but unfortunately, the event postponed.

A total of eight teams – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE and two qualifying teams- were set to play the tournament this year.

Earlier, the Asia Cup that was scheduled to be held in September this year was postponed to next year. ACC had informed that they are considering June 2021 to host the tournament.

Meanwhile, many India Under-19 players, who participated in U-19 World Cup this year, are playing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. Kartik Tyagi, Priyam Garg and Ravi Bishnoi are some prominent names that have given remarkable performance in the ongoing tournament.

Asia Cup 2020: Pakistan Can Take Ultimate Call Whether To Change Host Nation Or Not

While Pakistan has the right to host the Asia Cup 2020, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly not willing to send the national team in this tour. Before the upcoming meeting to re-discuss about the host nation of the Asia Cup 2020, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has reportedly clarified about their probable action. And it is not good news for India.

Ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia, the top six Asian teams will meet in the Asia Cup 2020. While the T20 World Cup 2020 will run between 18th October and 15th November 2020, the Asia Cup 2020 is likely to be held in September 2020.

Pakistan has the hosting right for Asia Cup 2020

The upcoming Asia Cup will be in the T20I format, and Pakistan has been awarded to host this tournament. However, the major issue of this tournament is that the Indian team is most likely to not travel in Pakistan. The ACC will meet in February to discuss this issue while the BCCI is expecting the change of the host nation for this forthcoming tournament.

However, the ACC has reportedly clarified that only Pakistan can take the ultimate decision about altering the host nation of the upcoming Asia Cup.

According to ANI, an ACC source claimed, “ACC will have a meeting sometime in February to discuss issues related to the hosting of the Asia Cup this year. This year Pakistan is the host so it is Pakistan’s call if they want to host the tournament or not.”

There is no doubt that India and Pakistan are the two big teams of this tournament. Without one of these teams, the tournament can lose its shine. Also, the record seven times Asia Cup winner India won the last Asia Cup T20 (2016) as well as the last Asia Cup tournament (2018 in ODI format).

India last played in Pakistan in 2008

Since 2008, India haven’t played an international match in Pakistan. After the Sri Lankan team bus attack in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan has hugely struggled to organise international cricket. Though the limited-overs international cricket matches re-started in that country in 2015, the country only managed to organise a Test match last December. Still, the big cricket teams are not interested in travel to Pakistan immediately.

Apart from this security issue, the two countries have political tensions for a long time. Since January 2013, they haven’t played a bilateral series in international cricket yet. India and Pakistan currently meet only in ICC and ACC tournaments.
