After two straight defeats, the hosts climbed to 10th in the Bundesliga table with 14 points from 12 matches, while Stuttgart have earned just eight points, reports Efe news.

Leverkusen dominated throughout on Friday night, but visiting goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler held the home side at bay until the 76th minute, when Volland exploited a Stuttgart defensive lapse on a corner.

The 26-year-old striker added a second goal seven minutes later to seal the win for Leverkusen.

After its sixth win of the season, Leipzig climbed to the third spot in the German league standings with 22 points, and have a two-point lead over reigning champions Bayern Munich, which moved down to fourth, reports Efe.

Poulsen on Sunday opened the scoring for the hosts three minutes before the half-hour mark off an assist from German midfielder Diego Demme.

In the 68th minute, defender Lukas Klostermann doubled the lead with Austria forward Marcel Sabitzer making the assist.

Poulsen shone again in the closing minutes, seizing on an assist from Klostermann.

Leverkusen beat Zurich in Europa League

Leverkusen (Germany), Nov 9: Bayer Leverkusen advanced into the round of 32 after beating Zurich on Tin Jedvaj’s sole goal in the 4th round in Europa League’s group stage.

Both sides needed some time to gain a foothold into the game but as the match progressed hosts Leverkusen gained more and more control on home soil. Nevertheless, goal-scoring opportunities remained a rare occurrence in the opening period, reports Xinhua.

The spectators at BayArena had to wait until the half-hour mark before Dominik Kohr reaped the first chance of the match after unleashing a dangerous low shot from outside the box.

Leverkusen had another promising chance before the break but Lucas Alario failed to overcome Zurich goalkeeper Yanick Brecher following a one-on-one from a sharp angle in the 44th minute.

After the restart, Heiko Herrlich’s men started where they left off as Julian Brandt came close with two long-range efforts.

The host’s efforts eventually paid off with 60 minutes played when Julian Brandt’s delivery into the box allowed Tin Jedvaj to head home the opener at the near post.

Moments later, Zurich almost restored parity out of the blue but Kevin Ruegg squandered a good chance with all time and space from inside the box and only goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to beat.

Leverkusen remained unimpressed and continued on the front foot but neither Leon Bailey nor Paulinho was able to put the result beyond doubt ahead of time.

However, Zurich lacked in penetration but will progress into the next round as well despite the defeat on the road.

With the result, Bayer Leverkusen sits atop the standings with 9 points and a better goal difference compared to second-placed Zurich. Ludogrets and Larnaca secured only two points from four games and won’t make it into the next round.

“It is a very important victory for us as we wanted to keep a clean sheet after conceding too many goals in the past games. We stayed focused until the final whistle,” Leverkusen’s defensive midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger said.

Bayern enter German Cup final

Berlin, April 18: Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 in an away tie, qualifying for the German Cup final thanks to three goals from captain Thomas Mueller, two from Robert Lewandowski and one from Thiago Alcantara.

The scoreline came in the second half of Tuesday night’s match after a relatively even first half, reports Efe news.

Bayern took to the field with five changes from the team that had started the match in the 5-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach on April 14.

Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski were on the pitch in place of Niklas Suele, Corentin Tolisso, Juan Bernat, Sebastian Rudy and Sandro Wagner.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the third minute by extending a left-footed effort from Javi Martinez from the edge of the box.

In the 8th, it was Lewandowski again, increasing the score with a shot from short distance.

However, Leverkusen were back in the game when Lars Bender grabbed the opportunity to score in the 16th minute.

Bender scored headfirst after a shot from Kai Havertz hit Jerome Boateng’s back.

Leverkusen had a good chance to draw with a strike from winger Karim Bellarabi in the 37th minute, but Bayern’s goalkeeper Sven Ulreich made a great save.

Overall, the game was played in the half of Leverkusen, who were looking for their chances with quick counter-attacks.

Leverkusen again came close to a draw in the second half when, in the 50th minute, Ulreich stopped a shot from Bellarabi that could have been the start of a different ending.

However, what came in the 52nd minute was Bayern’s third goal by Mueller, who scored after a good pass from Thiago.

Then Leverkusen collapsed and Bayern had no mercy. In the 61st minute Thiago made the fourth, from a pass of Robben in a play initiated by Ribery, and in the 63rd minute Mueller scored the fifth.

Leverkusen managed to make up the result a little bit with a great free-kick goal by Jamaican Leon Bailey but shortly after Mueller would score the sixth for Bayern and his hat-trick.

Volland’s hat-trick gives Bayer 4-1 win vs Frankfurt

Leverkusen (Germany), April 15: German football side Bayer Leverkusen forward Kevin Volland scored a hat-trick to lead his team to a 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga 30th round.

Bayer forward Julian Brandt opened the scoring 20 minutes into the match, but Marco Fabian netted the equaliser for Frankfurt just three minutes later on Saturday, reports Efe.

Volland gave Bayer a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute, then struck again six minutes later.

With just two minutes to go, Volland found the back of the net for a third time, securing the 4-1 home win for Bayer.

This second straight victory leaves Bayer securely in fourth place with 51 points, five points ahead of sixth-placed Frankfurt.

Hoffenheim defeated Hamburger 2-0 to occupy the fifth position with 46 points, while Hamburger remains in the relegation zone with only 22 points.

Also on Saturday, Hertha Berlin made a 2-1 home win over last-placed Koln to hold the ninth position with 39 points.

Leverkusen clobber Leipzig 4-1 to climb to 4th in Bundesliga

Leipzig (Germany), April 10: Bayer Leverkusen mounted a stunning comeback to defeat RB Leipzig 4-1 and claim fourth place in the Bundesliga.

With 48 points from 29 matches, Leverkusen enjoy an advantage of two points over both Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt in the fight for the final Champions League berth, reports Efe.

The hosts dominated in the early going and took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a low, hard strike by Marcel Sabitzer here on Monday.

At that point, Leipzig, perhaps looking ahead to Thursday’s Europa League quarterfinal second leg in Marseille, drew back and ceded possession to Leverkusen.

Bringing their speed to bear, the visitors went on the attack and after several squandered opportunities, the equaliser came in the final minute of the first half on a strike by 18-year-ol Kai Havertz.

Leverkusen took the lead in the 51st minute courtesy of another of their young standouts, Julian Brandt, who caught up with a booming kick from visiting goalkeeper Bernd Leno and steered it into the Leipzig net.

Panagiotis Retsos, a second-half substitute, scored just five minutes later to make it 3-1 for Leverkusen. Kevin Volland got the fourth goal in the 69th minute.

Bayern, Leverkusen lose in Bundesliga

Berlin, March 19: Leipzig came from behind to beat runaway leaders Bayern Munich 2-1 while bottom side Cologne upset Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at the closer of the 27th round of Bundesliga football action.

Bayern Munich’s 18-game unbeaten streak came to an end as Leipzig’s Naby Keita and Timo Werner turned the tide to reap crucial points for a UEFA Champions League berth on Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency.

Both sides staged a lively opening period as Yussuf Poulsen tested Sven Ulreich before Sandro Wagner opened the scoring with 12 minutes played after heading home James Rodriguez’ pinpoint cross into the box.

Leipzig remained unimpressed and pressed forward as Bruma and Werner came to their chances before Keita restored parity to shock the passive Bundesliga leaders.

After the restart, Bayern continued lethargically and posed no threat while Leipzig turned the tide in the 56th minute when Werner made no mistake to slot home Keita’s through ball from the edge of the box into the far post corner.

Bayern increased their pressure but they lacked in ideas and accuracy to score a late equalizer against Leipzig, who held firm to beat the Bavarians for the first time.

With the result, 6th-placed Leipzig reduced their arrears to the top-four whereas Bayern’s lead atop the standings shrank to 17 points.

Cologne secured a vital 2-0 victory over ten-men Bayer Leverkusen as goals from Yuya Osako and Simon Zoller sealed all three points on home soil.

The Billy Goats ensured a bright start on home soil as Yuya Osako needed only nine minutes to break the deadlock after slotting home left footed from inside the box.

Cologne focussed on fast breaks meanwhile Leverkusen controlled the ball but were unable to produce goal-scoring opportunities.

At the half hour mark, things went from bad to worse for Leverkusen as Lucas Alario received his marching orders after a violent incident with Cologne’s Dominic Maroh.

The Werkself had a couple of promising chances after the restart but Cologne’s custodian Timo Horn saved Julian Brandt’s fine effort before Leon Bailey unleashed an free kick on target.

Sixty minutes into the game, Cologne gained a foothold into the game and wrapped up all three points as Simon Zoller chipped the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Bernd Leno to double the lead and kill the game in the 69th minute.

With the win, Cologne climb off the last place and oust Hamburg from the 17th position meanwhile Bayer Leverkusen slipped out of the top four to 5th place.

Dortmund draw, Leverkusen win in Bundesliga

Berlin, March 4: Borussia Dortmund shared the spoils with Leipzig after a 1-1 stalemate while Bayer Leverkusen moved 2-1 past Wolfsburg in the 25th round in the Bundesliga.

The “BVB” lost their second place on Saturday to rivals Schalke after dropping points following a 1-1 draw at Leipzig, reports Xinhua news agency.

Both sides staged a lively opening period with chances at both ends of the pitch. Dortmund overcame Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi twice but the referee ruled both goals offside.

Leipzig made use of their next opportunity to shock the visitors with the opener through Jean-Kevin Augustin, who benefited on Naby Keita’s through ball to slot home at the the half-hour mark.

Dortmund remained unimpressed and responded before the break as Marco Reus rounded Leipzig goalkeeper Gulacsi to restore parity with 38 minutes played.

After the restart both sides lacked in accuracy for the final pass. Hence goal-scoring opportunities remained a rare occurrence.

Michy Batshuayi had the best chance for Dortmund but the Chelsea loanee failed to slot home from a promising position in the 63rd minute while Leipzig’s Bruma squandered two golden chances in the closing period.

With the result, Dortmund slipped to the 3rd place whereas Leipzig stay at the 6th place in the standings.

Bayer Leverkusen extended Wolfsburg’s winless run to five games, as goals from Lucas Alario and Julian Brandt were enough to record their 11th victory of the season.

The “Werkself” grabbed a bright start into the clash as Lars Bender pulled wide of the far post with just 19 seconds on the clock.

Heiko Herrlich’s men controlled the reins while the “Wolves” came to their first chance with 17 minutes played when custodian Bernd Leno had to defuse Maximilian Arnold’ s shot on target.

Wolfsburg helped Bayer Leverkusen to break the deadlock as Arnold felled Kai Havertz inside the box to cause a foul play penalty, which was converted by Alario, who sent Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels into the wrong corner in the 31st minute.

With the narrow lead behind Leverkusen retracted and let Wolfsburg do the work. However, the “Wolves” lacked in penetration and were unable to overcome Leverkusen’s well-positioned defence within the first half.

Meanwhile Leverkusen fielded Julian Brandt, who doubled the lead eleven minutes later after his fielding by chipping the ball over onrushing Casteels in the 78th minute.

The joy was, however, shortlived as Wolfsburg reduced the arrears when Admir Mehmedi marked his third goal of the season moments later.

However, Wolfsburg’s hopes of a comeback were destroyed in the dying minutes of the game when William received his marching orders after booking his second yellow card.

With the win, fifth placed Leverkusen remain in touching distance to the top four while Wolfsburg sit at the 16th place and are fully stuck in the relegation battle.
