Deep Dasgupta Believes Shikhar Dhawan Is A Contender For India Captain During Sri Lanka Tour

Deep Dasgupta, former India wicketkeeper-batsman said he believes opener Shikhar Dhawan is a strong contender for India captaincy for the proposed limited-overs series against Sri Lanka in July.

India is expected to field a squad dominated by white-ball specialists as the Test regulars, including captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be in England in July, preparing for the 5-Test series in August and September.

Deep Dasgupta: Shikar Dhawan Is An Option For Captaining Limited Overs Team In Absence Of Test Regulars

Deep Dasgupta, speaking to Sports Today, said an experienced bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also a good captaincy candidate for the limited-overs series comprising of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is in Sri Lanka. BCCI last week announced a 20-member squad for the World Test Championship final, starting June 18, and the 5-Test series against England which will be played from August.

India has more than a month’s gap between the two assignments but the Test regulars are not going to return from England due to travel restrictions in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed that India will be playing the white-ball series in July in Sri Lanka and details have emerged that it would be 3 ODIs and as many T20Is.

While Shikhar Dhawan was not in the reckoning for the Test side, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was not picked for the Test tour of England due to fitness concerns that have kept him away from the longest format of the game since 2018.

“Obviously, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul are not available. The senior-most player available in that side is Shikhar, so Shikhar (captaincy option) I guess,” Deep Dasgupta said.

“One of the questions was ‘who do I see captaining the side?’, I mentioned Shikhar, let’s not forget, if Bhuvneshwar is fit and ready to play, he is a good captain candidate as well for that series.”

The left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan has led Sunrisers Hyderabad in the past and given his experience, he could be considered for the role of the captain when India tour Sri Lanka. The 35-year old has the experience and that could work in his favour when the BCCI name the captain. In the IPL 2021 season, he showed good form with the bat by being the leading run-scorer before postponement and that would give him confidence.

Deep Dasgupta: England Conditions Might Have Helped Bhuvneshwar Kumar But He Hasn’t Played Tests For More Than 2 Years And Struggled With Fitness Post 2018

Meanwhile, Deep Dasgupta said he was not surprised when Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s name did not feature in the 20-man Test squad for the England tour. However, the cricketer-turned commentator and expert said the senior pacer’s availability will be a big boost to the side that will travel to Sri Lanka.

“I am not surprised. They have already got 6 fast bowlers (for England tour). I understand that those conditions might help Bhuvneshwar but he has not played red-ball cricket for 2 to 2 and half years. And he has struggled with his fitness post-2018,” he said.

“You don’t know whether his body will take playing 5-day cricket. As a bowler, if you’re playing, you might have to bowl 20 overs a day and come back the next day as well. I don’t know whether you want to take that chance.

“He hasn’t played red-ball cricket in Ranji Trophy as well. Also, I have a feeling that they had an idea that the Sri Lanka series might be there, you have someone like Bhuvneshwar there. You need some senior players,” Deep Dasgupta added.

While the Test regulars are set to leave for England in the first week of June after completing a week-long quarantine period, the BCCI is yet to announce the squad for the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka.

Probable Squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Chahar, T Natarajan, Chetan Sakariya, Rahul Tewatia, Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy

Also In Contention: Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed, Jaydev Unadkat, Kuldeep Yadav, Manish Pandey, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Ravi Bishnoi

India Have Capable Players Who Can Adapt In Any Conditions, Says Reetinder Singh Sodhi

Reetinder Singh Sodhi, former Indian cricketer has opined that Virat Kohli’s Team India can defeat New Zealand in the finale of the World Test Championship as it has players who can adapt to any conditions.

Virat Kohli-led India will face New Zealand in the finale of the World Test Championship (WTC), which begins on May 18 in Southampton. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a strong 20-man squad for the encounter, apart from four reserves.

Reetinder Singh Sodhi: India Can Win In Adverse Situations As They Have Capable Players Who Can Adapt

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Reetinder Singh Sodhi has opined that Virat Kohli’s Team India can defeat New Zealand in the finale of the inaugural World Test Championship as it has capable players who can adapt to any conditions and play well in adverse situations.

While speaking to India News, Reetinder Singh Sodhi said, “The conditions will be adverse. The match is not in India, it is in England. But when we talk about Team India’s form, the way we play in adverse situations, these are not different conditions for us. We have players who can adapt. We have capable bowlers; our batting is fantastic. If we talk about our slip catching in Test matches, that is also very good.”

The former cricketer highlighted that the current Indian team does not collapse under pressure. He added that if they play to their potential, they will win the inaugural edition of the WTC.

“If we talk about a few years back, we used to come under some pressure, we used to face some difficulties, but if we talk about this team and their present form, about the history Team India, created on the Australia tour, there is nothing much to worry about. If India plays to their potential, the World Test Championship final will definitely be ours,” signed off Sodhi.

India and New Zealand qualified for the WTC final after finishing as the top-two teams in the inaugural edition which started after the ICC World Cup in August 2019. India won 12 out of the 17 Tests they played during this time period while New Zealand registered 7 victories out of 11.

Virat Kohli-led India Will Pay Against The Kiwis In WTC Final In England Before A 5 Match Test Series Against England

Team India will face New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship final in Southampton from June 18 and then play 5 Tests against hosts England between August 4 and September 14 in Nottingham, London, Leeds, and Manchester. BCCI announced a 20-member Indian squad for June’s ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton. The same squad will then face hosts England in the subsequent five-match Test series in August-September.

The biggest additions in the squad are that of fast bowler Mohammed Shami and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been out of action from international cricket for a long time due to their respective injuries. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, opener Prithvi Shaw, seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and left-arm leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav are the major names that are missing from the squad.

Mohammed Shami last played for India in the Day-Night Test against Australia in Adelaide (December 2020) after which a broken arm forced him to return home for recovery and recuperation. Ravindra Jadeja also got injured on the Australian tour, fracturing his thumb in the third Test in Sydney in January this year. Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, and Arzan Nagwaswalla will be the standby players on the tour.

India’s squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul (subject to fitness clearance), Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper; subject to fitness clearance).

Irfan Pathan Asserts David Warner’s Uninspiring Captaincy Main Reason For SRH’s Poor Run In IPL 2021

Irfan Pathan has said that David Warner’s uninspiring captaincy was one of the main reasons for the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) poor run in IPL 2021.

SRH handed over the reins to Kane Williamson after suffering defeats in five of their six matches under David Warner’s leadership. However, the move did not yield immediate dividends as the Orange Army was handed a 55-run drubbing by the Rajasthan Royals.

Irfan Pathan: SRH’s Biggest Problem Was David Warner’s Captaincy Particularly Batting Cautiously

During a discussion on Star Sports, Irfan Pathan expressed surprise at SRH’s insipid displays in IPL 2021 and pointed out that David Warner’s captaincy and batting are to be blamed to a large extent.

“They surprised us. They were a top-four team for me. SRH’s biggest problem was David Warner’s captaincy, the way he was managing the team and the way he was batting. He was batting very cautiously,” said Pathan.

The former India all-rounder highlighted that SRH replacing their skipper implies they were dissatisfied with his decision-making.

“When Kane Williamson was made the captain later, it means franchise was not happy with him, the way he was making the decisions,” added Irfan Pathan.

The SRH management stated they relieved David Warner of his duties as they wanted to go with an overseas all-rounder. With Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson in good form, they did not have any other option but to leave David Warner out of their playing XI and thereby change the captain as well.

With 5447 runs, David Warner is fifth on the list of the leading run-getters in the IPL and the highest run-getter among overseas players. With 50 half-centuries, he has the maximum fifties in the IPL history and he is the only player to have won the Orange Cap a record three times – in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Irfan Pathan: SRH Didn’t Have Any Experienced Middle Order Batsman As Kedar Jadhav Was Ignored

While highlighting the lack of experience in the SRH middle order, Irfan Pathan questioned the decision of not playing Kedar Jadhav in the initial stages of the tournament.

“We always talk about SRH that they don’t have any experienced players in the middle. Kedar Jadhav did not play at the start although he is an experienced player. They played Suchith for a couple of matches and then again dropped him,” said Pathan.

The 36-year-old concluded by stating that the absence of an express pace bowler is also a concern for SRH.

“They will have to improve their combination and they do not have an out-and-out quick bowler, who can consistently bowl around 140 kph and keep performing on flat pitches,” signed off Irfan Pathan.

SRH was also hit hard by injuries to two of their most accomplished seamers. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar missed a couple of matches due to a thigh injury, T Natarajan was ruled out of IPL 2021 after playing just two encounters.

David Warner is not only the top scorer in SRH’s history, the 34-year-old has also led the team to their maiden IPL title (2016). The Australian himself has been in the indifferent form of late and a far cry from the destructive batsman as he had a strike rate of just 110.28 in the IPL 2021 managing 193 runs averaging 32.16 in 6 games.

Kedar Jadhav had scored only 62 runs in 8 games for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 at a modest average of 20.66 and a strike rate of 93.93 which is poor by T20 standards and he was released by CSK. He managed 40 runs in 4 games averaging 20 in IPL 2021 at a comparatively better strike rate of 125.

The franchise had a disastrous start to their campaign in 2021 losing 6 of their first 7 matches as the Orange Army is languishing at the bottom of the points table when the IPL was suspended indefinitely.

Aakash Chopra Felt Surprised By Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Omission In 20 Man Test Squad

Aakash Chopra, former Indian opener-turned-commentator feels it is ‘little surprising’ to not see pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s name in India’s WTC final and England Tests 20 man squad.

On Friday (May 7), the BCCI announced a 20-man squad for the Virat Kohli-led Team India’s forthcoming international assignments starting with the ICC World Test Championship final — against New Zealand in mid-June — followed by a five-match Test series against England, in the United Kingdom.

Aakash Chopra Surprised By Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Omission For WTC Final And 5 Tests Against England As He Is An Asset There

While the regulars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Mohammed Shami made the cut, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari returned after prolonged injuries.

On the other hand, youngsters such as Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel also were included after impressive performances in the recent Test series against Australia and England, but the list didn’t feature swing king Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s last Test appearance came in early 2018. Since then, regular injuries have dented his progress but he remains a part of the limited-overs setup. Somehow, he has lost the team management’s faith when it comes to the longest format, mainly due to many other resources being available and also in order to manage his workload.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Nonetheless, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra reviewed India’s WTC final and England Tests squad and remained surprised with Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s exclusion in English conditions which favours swing bowling.

“Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s name not being there is a little surprising from my point of view. It is possible he might not have gotten fit till the WTC final or you may not have wanted to take a chance with him,” said Aakash Chopra on his Youtube channel.

He further opined, “But if there are five Test matches in England and you have a bowler like Bhuvi bowling at his peak, you can surely play him two or three of the five-Test matches. That’s what I would be thinking that if I get a bowler like Bhuvi in those conditions, he is an asset.”

“But his name is not there for a series that starts in August and ends in September, there are five Test matches. When we talk about the huge squads, if he is fit, then why not Bhuvneshwar Kumar. You might also be thinking the same,” concluded Chopra.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has played 21 Tests picking 63 scalps averaging 26.10. He did well in the England tour in 2014 picking 19 scalps and his career-best figures of 6/82 came at Lord’s in that series. He last played a Test in January 2018 against and in South Africa.

Aakash Chopra: Kuldeep Yadav’s Omission Hard While Hardik Pandya Isn’t Ready For Long Spells In Tests

Aakash Chopra had further termed chinaman wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s omission as a ‘little hard’ whereas he made a bold claim about all-rounder Hardik Pandya missing out. The 43-year-old believes Hardik Pandya won’t feature in the Test line-up for a long as nowadays he isn’t bowling a lot even in limited-overs and isn’t ready for delivering long spells with the red cherry in Tests.

KL Rahul, who had a recent appendicitis surgery, and Wriddhiman Saha, who tested positive for Covid-19, have both been named in the 20-man squad, both subject to clearing their fitness tests. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw are among those who continued to miss out on the Test squad.

Among bowlers, Navdeep Saini and Kuldeep Yadav are two notable absentees from the squad. Among standby players, Arzan Nagwaswalla, a bowler from Gujarat, has been named for the first time.

Squad: Virat Kohli (C), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav

ICC World Test Championship Final: 3 Players Who Should Have Been In The Indian Squad

The Indian squad for the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand was announced yesterday by the BCCI and the selectors have covered most of the bases. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Hanuma Vihari, and Mohammed Shami have all returned to the test squad and the rest of the squad pick themselves.

Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Mohammed Siraj have been retained for their impressive performances in the tests against England while Kuldeep Yadav has been dropped from the squad. There are four openers in the squad, the middle order of Pujara, Kohli, and Rahane while the first-choice wicket-keeper will be Rishabh Pant. Here are 3 players who should have been in the Indian squad.

3 Players Who Should Have Been In The Indian Squad:

Prithvi Shaw:

Indian test team
Prithvi Shaw [photo: Twitter]
Prithvi Shaw started his test career with a bang scoring a century on debut, but injuries did not help his progress and he was given a chance in the Australia series. But his poor form and technique were exposed and he was eventually dropped from the Indian test team for the England series. He then went on to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai and finished as the top run-getter of the tournament.

He scored 827 runs with four centuries in eight innings at an average of 165 and broke the record for the highest individual score in Vijay Hazare tournament history with a 227 not out. He continued his good form in the IPL and proved to have got his touchback. He was very destructive and scored 308 runs in eight innings at a terrific strike rate. He would have surely been among the eyes of the selectors and he must be unlucky to miss out despite his great form.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar:

World Test Championship finals, India
Bhuvneshwar Kumar[photo: Twitter]
The Indian speedster Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to international action recently in the limited series against England and delivered at the crunch times for the nation. After being hit by a lot of injuries, this was the time for him to excel and he did look to have got his rhythm going.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the best swing bowlers in India and England is a place that offers a lot of seaming conditions for him to exploit. He has good numbers in England in tests and he was expected to be on the flight to England on his recent form. He hasn’t played test cricket for the last three years but he did deserve to be on the squad being one of the leading bowlers in Indian cricket.

Jaydev Unadkat:

Ranji Trophy 2020, India
Jaydev Unadkat[photo: Twitter]
The left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat has been out of international action for the last three years, but certainly, he has been on the radars of the selectors showing consistent performances in domestic cricket. Unadkat led his side Saurashtra to win in the Ranji Trophy final 2020 and he had to take a lot of credit for the team’s performances.

Unadkat picked up 67 wickets in the 10 first-class games at an average of 13.23. He picked up seven five-wicket hauls and proved to a match-winner for his side. He bowls a very good line in the longer format and provides a tough challenge for the batsman. He recently bowled well in the IPL too and has been assigned a different role rather than the death overs. With no left-arm seamers on the Indian side, Unadkat should have made it to the flight to England.

Flop XI Of The IPL 2021

The IPL 2021 did see a lot of good performances but it came as a surprise when some of the seasoned campaigners failed to impress until the midway of the tournament. Every team played a minimum of seven games and the Indian contingent performed really well more than the overseas players.

The purple cap list and the orange cap list showed a lot of Indian domination and such was the intensity of the tournament with the places up for grabs. With Covid-19 surging in the country, five players pulled out of the IPL 2021 despite being with the squad for a considerable part of the time.  With the tournament suspended as of now, it is time to look at the flop XI of IPL 2021.

Flop XI Of IPL 2021:

Shubman Gill:

Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2021
Shubman Gill[photo: Twitter]
Shubman Gill after an impressive IPL last year did not have the best start to the tournament this year. He failed to get going and he looked like he was totally out of socks. Apart from the 43 he got against the Delhi Capitals in the last game for KKR, he wasn’t getting the big scores and scored just 132 runs in the seven games he played. It was way below his standards and a lot will be expected from him.

David Warner(C):

Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2021
David Warner[photo: Twitter]
David Warner, who is one of the most consistent performers for the Sunrisers Hyderabad over the years couldn’t get his act together and his poor form had a major impact on the team’s performances too. Warner did score 193 runs in 6 games but his strike rate wasn’t at its best and he did not look to be at his usual best. The Sunrisers management dropped him from the playing XI and sacked him from captaincy too.

Ishan Kishan(WK):

Mumbai Indians, IPL 2021
Ishan Kishan[photo: Twitter]
Ishan Kishan who made his debut for India prior to the IPL in the T20 series against England had a tough outing in the Chennai pitch and was dropped from the playing XI after a string of low scores. A lot was expected from him after an excellent season last year and he scored just 73 runs in the five games he played. He is one of the better strikers of the cricket ball and he should have scored more of his calibre.

Nicholas Pooran:

Punjab Kings, IPL 2021
Nicholas Pooran[photo: IPL T20]
Probably, the most disappointing batsman out of the lot was Nicholas Pooran who is one of the best talents going around in the world. He has a lot of class and is a tremendous striker of the cricket ball, but he had to go through a rough patch of form and registered four ducks in the season before getting dropped from the playing XI. He scored 28 runs in 7 games and never got into his groove.

Hardik Pandya:

Mumbai Indians, IPL 2021
Hardik Pandya[photo: Twitter]
Hardik Pandya struggled for runs in the early part of the tournament with the games held in Chennai where it is very hard to hit through the line. Hardik Pandya is one of the best finishers in the game, and his poor run of form altered the batting order totally with Krunal Pandya coming in at four. He did not bowl in the seven games he played and scored just 52 runs with one good knock coming in his last game against CSK.

Dan Christian:

Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2021
Daniel Christian[photo: Twitter]
Dan Christian is one of the best T20 all-rounder going around the world and he has got a lot of experience. He can tonk the ball out of the stadium and does bowl the difficult overs for his team. However, he did not have the best outings for RCB as he scored just 3 runs in the 3 games he played and did not pick up any wickets in the tournament. Subsequently, he was dropped from playing XI after his poor stint.

Washington Sundar:

Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2021
Washington Sundar[photo: Twitter]
Washington Sundar was given ample amount of opportunities by the RCB skipper Virat Kohli with the bat and he failed to get going in any of the games. His form in the test series was so good that RCB decided to send Sundar to open the batting or in at three. He managed just 31 runs in 6 games and picked up just three wickets too. He wasn’t used in the powerplay where he is very productive and he needs to step up soon.

Jhye Richardson:

Punjab Kings, IPL 2021
Jhye Richardson[photo: Twitter]
The leading wicket-taker of the Big Bash League 2021, Jhye Richardson came into the side with a lot of promise, but he couldn’t make a big impact on the performance of the team. He picked up just 3 wickets in the 3 games he played and was also very expensive at the end overs. He was bagged up for hefty money and he had to do a lot more as he was dropped from playing XI after three games.

Shardul Thakur:

Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2021
Shardul Thakur[photo: Twitter]
Shardul Thakur was taken to the cleaners in this IPL and he proved to be very costly in his spells. Despite the conditions helping the batsman, he should have done better with the international experience he has been gaining and he couldn’t contribute much to the team. He wasn’t needed with the bat and he picked up just 5 wickets in the 7 games he played.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar:

Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2021
Bhuvneshwar Kumar[photo: Twitter]
Bhuvneshwar Kumar wasn’t anywhere near to his best and he had a huge role to play in the Sunrisers bowling setup. He did not produce wickets in the powerplay which proved to be very costly and also couldn’t be very effective at the death overs too. He picked up just three wickets in the five games he played and Sunrisers would have wanted a lot more from him in this IPL.

Yuzvendra Chahal:

Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2021
Yuzvendra Chahal[photo: Twitter]
Yuzvendra Chahal wasn’t very effective in this IPL and he continued his poor form from the international games into the RCB franchise. He was very expensive at times and Kohli backed him a lot by not dropping him from the side despite inconsistent performances. He picked up just 4 wickets in the 7 games he played this IPL and he would have hoped for a better performance than this.

IPL 2021: Abhishek Sharma Has Ability To Become A Future All Rounder Of India, Says Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan, SunRisers Hyderabad spinner believes that Abhishek Sharma will become a proper all-rounder for India in the future.

A dominating bowling effort from Khaleel Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma had helped SRH restrict Punjab Kings to a paltry 120 in 19.4 overs on Wednesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Rashid Khan: Abhishek Sharma Will Become A Proper All-Rounder For India In The Future

In response, SRH (121/1) chased down the target with eight balls to spare thanks to a fine batting performance by Jonny Bairstow.

Abhishek Sharma picked his career-best figures of 2/24 in only his 2nd game in IPL 2021. He has played 16 matches so far amassing 145 runs and picking 5 scalps. His average of 14.5 and economy rate of 5.8 is among the best in IPL 2021.

“You will become a proper all-rounder for India in the future who will a lot of matches for his side. You have a lot of ability. If you work hard, you will get success,” Rashid told Abhishek Sharma in a video posted on the official website of IPL.

Talking about his own performance, Abhishek told Rashid: “I was practicing my bowling a lot. Suddenly, when we were in our huddle before the match against Punjab Kings, skipper David Warner told me that you are going to bowl the first over.

“I did not hear it nicely so confirmed it once again. I asked you a lot about this role, I was also confident of doing the job for our team.”

“During the lockdown, we were at home. My father is my childhood coach, he was a left-arm spinner so I have learned a lot from him during the lockdown. The variation like slider, I learned that.

“I had the confidence of implementing in the game. I think I can bowl this ball at any stage of the game,” he added.

In the match against Punjab Kings, Abhishek Sharma returned with figures of 2-24 from his four overs. This win was Hyderabad’s first win in the ongoing season of the IPL. Rashid Khan is the leading wicket-taker of SRH with 5 scalps in 4 games averaging 16.2 and once again having the best bowling economy rate of 5.06.

Khaleel Ahmed Picks 3/21 As Punjab Scores Only 120

Jonny Bairstow hit an unbeaten 63 and David Warner slammed a run-a-ball 37 as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down a 121-run target in 18.4 overs against Punjab Kings.

Fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed led an impressive bowling effort before Jonny Bairstow smashed an unbeaten fifty as Sunrisers Hyderabad snapped their three-match losing streak with a convincing nine-wicket win over Punjab Kings in an IPL match no. 14 on Wednesday.

Asked to bowl first, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace-spin duo of Khaleel Ahmed – 3/21 – and Abhishek Sharma – 2/24 – did the bulk of the damage to bundle out Punjab Kings for a below-par 120 in 19.4 overs.

Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 1/16, star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan – 1/17 – and pacer Siddarth Kaul – 1/27 – also picked up a wicket each as Punjab Kings never gained momentum. SunRisers Hyderabad will next take on Delhi Capitals on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

For Punjab, the likes of in-form KL Rahul (4) and Nicholas Pooran(0) failed, and in fact, apart from opener Mayank Agarwal and Shahrukh Khan (both 22), none could score more than 20 runs. They lost half their side for 63 and never recovered and lost the last 4 wickets adding only 19 runs.

India And Mumbai Indians Are Pleased To Have Jasprit Bumrah In Team: Ian Bishop

Ian Bishop, former West Indies fast bowler said that Team India would be pleased to have someone like Jasprit Bumrah who is sensational across all formats while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah once again put his best foot forward against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League 2021 encounter last week, as he registered figures of 14/1 in his 4 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah’s spell was crucial in the sense that SRH had a target of 151 to chase, and David Warner and Jonny Bairstow had given the team a fantastic start.

Ian Bishop: Jasprit Bumrah Isn’t Invincible

Jasprit Bumrah restricted the run flow in his four overs, which built pressure on SRH batsmen, and eventually, they fell short of the target by 13 runs. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop said that Team India would be pleased to have someone like pacer Jasprit Bumrah who is sensational across all formats. Ian Bishop also explained the reasons behind his success.

“He has had at periods when he has not been at his best and he has gone for runs. So it’s not like he is invincible,” Ian Bishop said.

“But he has such a great understanding on when to bowl what – those slower balls, those off-cutters when he goes for yorkers when he pulls his lengths back,” he added.

Jasprit Bumrah’s economy rate of 5.66 is 2nd best after Rashid Khan in IPL 2021. The 2nd highest wicket-taker in IPL 2020 has picked 3 wickets in as many games in IPL 2021 averaging 22.66.

SRH collapsed from 129/5 to 137 in a space of nine balls as Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah denied the batsmen any chance of slogging in the death overs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled economically and just gave 14 runs in his fours overs including a wicket.

“That is similar to what Bhuvneshwar Kumar at his best can do when he is in good rhythm, and he is thinking through. Maybe not as good as Bumrah, but close. Jasprit is amazing when he is in control. I cannot imagine how please Team India and Mumbai Indians are that guy is fit to play across all formats,” Bishop signed off.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has dealt with a lot of injury issues for the past two years and was out of the national team due to injuries, was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker in the three-match ODI series against England with six scalps. The pacer was ruled out of the Australian tour after sustaining a thigh muscle injury while playing for the SunRisers Hyderabad franchise in the IPL 2020. The 30-year-old pacer made his comeback with Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has played the last Test against South Africa in 2018 while his last ODI and T20I came in 2019 before the England T20Is and ODIs where he picked 4 T20I scalps and 6 ODI scalps.

While the present Indian pace bowling line-up has the likes of veterans Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in their ranks, which has sorted up a powerful pace-bowling side. In addition, the newcomers T Natarajan, Navdeep Saini, Shardul Thakur, and Mohammed Siraj make a pace attack to be respected and envied by other teams.

IPL 2021: SRH Bowlers Will Create Problems For KKR, Says Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra singled out SRH’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, and T Natarajan as bowlers who may create many problems for the Kolkata side.

The Indian Premier League 2021’s (IPL) first blockbuster Sunday will see two top teams go head-to-head in their first games. Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders will take on David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 3 of IPL 2021 at the MA Chidambaram, Chennai.

Ashish Nehra: Rashid Khan Can Cause All Sorts Of Problems For KKR

Since the Chepauk track offers assistance to spin, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra believes that SRH bowlers will be very useful on this pitch. Ashish Nehra played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017. Ashish Nehra was a member of SRH’s IPL winning side in 2016.

Ashish Nehra, while speaking to Cricbuzz, observed that after seeing the first game between the Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he expects the pitch to be useful to spinners despite the dew.

In addition, he singled out SRH’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, and T Natarajan as bowlers who may create many problems for the Kolkata side.

“As we saw in the first game, the square boundaries are big. The ball did get wet (due to dew) but the ball was still holding up on this pitch, unlike the Wankhede (in Mumbai). We saw it with seamers as well. Talk about Dan Christian, Kyle Jamieson, and even Harshal Patel, who was still pulling off the slower balls with a wet ball.

“So, bowlers like Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) and Natarajan have enough experience to make good use of the conditions. Especially, Rashid Khan. If the ball is dry, then he can cause a lot of trouble for KKR,” said Ashish Nehra.

Without a shred of a doubt, SRH possesses one of the strongest bowling line-ups in the tournament among the 8 teams participating in IPL 2021. They have been for the past couple of seasons, in fact. SRH has often defended low totals in the past, making them a threatening bowling attack.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar And T Natarajan’s Presence Makes SRH A Potent Pace Attack

In Bhuvneshwar Kumar they have a two-time, back-to-back Purple Cap winner. Rashid Khan was the sixth-highest wicket-taker last season with 20 wickets. He averaged a mere 17.2-the 3rd best and conceded runs at an economy rate of 5.37 -the best in IPL 2020.

“Yorker King” T Natarajan had a breakthrough season in the UAE, picking up 16 wickets in as many matches and impressing one and all the most with his pinpoint accuracy and economy at the death for which he was rewarded with an India cap.

KKR batsmen, when they walk out to bat on Sunday, will have a huge challenge at hand to negotiate pace and spin from SRH bowlers.

The main strength of SRH is the balance they possess, especially a fantastic top order. With the likes of David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, and Wriddhiman Saha up their ranks, SRH has one of the most destructive batting line-ups.

However, one area of concern was a lean on experience middle-order last time where they depended on the likes of Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma, and Abdul Samad.

SRH’s bowling too looks impressive with fit-again Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan leading the pack. The presence of Afghanistan star spinner Mujeeb-ur Rahman and yorker king T Natarajan adds the much-needed impetus to their attack. The major weakness of SRH is the absence of a finisher in their line-up. The middle-order too looked shaky in the last IPL in the UAE.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Probable XI:

Virat Kohli Criticises Scheduling Of Matches Despite Series Win

Virat Kohli questioned the scheduling of the matches and hoped that the authorities will look into it after winning a closely-contested series against England.

Since the end of last year’s IPL, India has played eight Test matches, six ODIs, and six T20 Internationals.

Virat Kohli: Scheduling Needs To Be Looked At In The Future Since Playing In Bio Bubbles Is Difficult

Immediately after the Indian Premier League T20 tournament that ended in November last year in UAE, India has been busy in full series with top international sides — Australia (away) and England (at home).

“Scheduling needs to be looked at in the future, [especially] in these times. Because playing in bio-bubbles will be difficult, and everyone can’t have the same mental capacity all the time. I am sure things will be discussed in the future,” said the India skipper after he led his team to a 2-1 win in the ODI series on Sunday, which capped off a grueling international calendar for his boys.

This year, Test matches and T20 Internationals needed to be given significance since there is the World Test Championship final which India will play in June as well as the T20 World Cup here in India in October-November. The ODI matches are turning out to be an unnecessary disturbance.

Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2020 and will look to repeat their performance in IPL 2021 which starts on April 9. India had 5 players from the Mumbai Indians squad namely Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Rahul Chahar in the 19 man squad in the T20I series against England. Krunal Pandya of MI played the ODIs for the first time.

Virat Kohli Unhappy With The MOM And MOS Awards

Virat Kohli was also unhappy with the man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series awards saying that they should have been given to pacers Shardul Thakur (4/67 and 30 off 21 balls) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (6 wickets in three matches and economy rate of 4.65) respectively. England’s Jonny Bairstow was declared man of the series and Sam Curran was the man of the match.

“I am surprised Shardul wasn’t the man of the match, and Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) wasn’t the man of the series. These guys were the difference in middle overs and powerplay. A lot of credit to them for bowling in tough conditions,” he added.

The 32-year-old said that he was impressed by the depth of India’s batting comprising of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, and the rising stars Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, and Ishan Kishan besides Virat Kohli himself.

“Death overs batting was extremely good. If the top three can get a hundred, then we can get scores in the range of 370 and 380. This win has been sweet because it’s against the top team in the world.”

India captain Virat Kohli said after claiming the ODI series with a seven-run win in a tense decider on Sunday that it had been “sweet” to beat old rivals England in every contest on the three-month tour. Virat Kohli predicted “exciting times” ahead for his triumphant side who are now expected to depose England as the world’s top one-day side in the ICC rankings in ODIs before they host the Twenty20 World Cup later this year.
