ENG vs IND 4th Test Match Preview:

England and India are set to face each other in the fourth Test at Kennington Oval, London, starting Thursday (Sept 2).

Following the innings and 76 runs defeat against England in the third Test, Team India will be under the pump to bounce back hard in the series. The visiting side lost 8 wickets in the opening session on day 4 as England leveled the 5 match-series 1-1 with 2 matches to go. Kennington Oval stadium in London will host the fourth Test, starting from September 02, Thursday. India has played 13 matches here and has won just one game. It has lost five times while seven games have been draws. The last time India played here was in 2018 when it lost the match by 118 runs.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane’s form and senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s probable inclusion will be in focus as India looks to move on from their Leeds debacle when they take on a stronger England team in the fourth Test at the Oval starting Thursday. The high of an inspirational victory at the Lord’s was followed by back-to-back batting debacles at Headingley and the penultimate game at Oval would certainly have an impact on both sides as the series heads towards its business end.

Pujara might have redeemed himself with a knock of 91 which was high on “intent quotient” but the same can’t be said about Rahane, whose form is shaky despite a crucial 61 in the second innings at the Lord’s.

James Anderson was the star performer again for the home side with his 3/6 performance. Overton also picked three wickets. During the second inning, England made a very healthy lead of 354 runs. Joe Root scored his third hundred (121) and Hameed(68), Malan(77), Burns(61) also scored half-centuries. Player of the Match Ollie Robinson was the pick of the England bowlers, with two wickets in the first innings and a five-wicket haul in the second.

Mark Wood has reportedly returned to full fitness and will be in contention for a spot in the playing XI. India, meanwhile, have received an injury scare, with Jadeja taking a precautionary knee scan.

With the series level at 1-1, we’re likely to get a cracker of an encounter at the Kennington Oval.

The form of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane had also been a cause of concern for India but that has been put to rest after the experience duo battle for almost 50 hours on day four of the Lord’s test and was instrumental in taking the game into The Final day before the Indian Paisa scripted a famous win.

On the other hand, the hosts, who have been hit by several injury concerns, will be focusing to bounce back to level the series.

England will be hoping their batting woes will subside with the inclusion of white-ball specialist Dawid Malan. Malan last played a test 3 years ago but is expected to deliver considering his first-class experience.

That being said, England would be eager to bounce back on their soil as the third Test commences on August 25, eight days after the second test concluded. Will India double their lead? Or will Joe Root and co. make a comeback?

Jack Leach Is Personally Confident Of Doing Well Against India In 5 Tests

Jack Leach, England spinner feels his team’s performance against India in the upcoming five-match Test series will determine where it stands in terms of growth and he is personally confident of doing well, having played against them in an away assignment earlier this year.

The left-arm spinner had taken 18 wickets when England toured India in February and March this year. Jack Leach said his success in that series makes him confident of doing well in the upcoming contest, beginning at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from Wednesday, 4th August.

Jack Leach hasn't played a home Test in two years.

Jack Leach Enjoys Bowling Spin In England And Is Confident Of Doing Well

England spinner Jack Leach hasn’t played a Test at home since the 2019 Ashes. The Somerset bowler hopes to find a place in England’s XI during the Test series against India starting Wednesday. Jack Leach, who missed out on the home series against the West Indies, Pakistan, and New Zealand, has played just 15 out of England’s 39 Tests since his debut in March 2018.

“The belief that I can bowl at these guys and do well,” Leach was quoted as saying by ‘The Guardian’ when asked what he can take from the tour of India.

England faces India in the first of a five-Test series at Trent Bridge starting on Wednesday, with Joe Root’s men looking to avenge their 3-1 reverse in the sub-continent earlier this year.

“If the wicket is better it is just adapting your skill slightly. I enjoy bowling spin in England. The wickets generally are quite dry and there is definitely a role to play. Playing against India, who are such a strong side, in a five Test-match series, will tell us a lot about where we’re at.”

Jack Leach is keen to do well so that he can cement his place in the side, which is set to clash with Australia in the Ashes series later this year.

“I guess I’m still trying to work my way into the team on a consistent basis. That’s my main thought: making sure my game is in a good place so I can be in the team and performing consistently,” he said.

Jack Leach last played a Test in November 2019 against New Zealand before the Sri Lanka series in January 2021 and the India series in March 2021. He has picked 62 scalps in 16 Tests. In the last series he played against India, he picked 18 scalps averaging 28.72.

Jack Leach: England Team Supporting Ben Stokes In His Decision To Take A Break

Team’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes recently announced that he has taken an indefinite break to “prioritize his mental wellbeing”. It is believed that a few other players may also skip the series but Jack Leach is determined to compete.

“My way of doing things is taking one little part at a time and I’m very focused on this India series. If I don’t play well, might not be where I’m going in the winter (Australia). It’s about taking care of what is in front of you. “

“There’s been a little bit of chat (about families on tour) but through my experiences in the past, missing bits of cricket through illness or injury, I want to be doing everything I can to play for England, reach my potential and see what I can achieve at the highest level.”

“It’s something I’d be very excited about, Australia in Australia. It’s the ultimate test and something you grow up looking at and thinking: ‘Wow, it’s amazing.’ (But) I’ll just think about what’s in front of me: Test matches against India.”

Jack Leach though said the entire England team supports Ben Stokes in his decision.

“All the lads are behind Ben and supporting him where we can. He has shown courage and bravery to prioritise his mental health. He is a focal part of our team and we will miss him. His priority is to take some time out from the game to get better. We can’t wait to welcome him back in the near future and winning games of cricket for England,” he said.

Ben Stokes has withdrawn from the upcoming 5-match Test series against India which begins from August 4 in Nottingham as he has decided to ‘prioritize his mental wellbeing’. Ben Stokes, who in normal circumstances would be vice-captain to Test skipper Joe Root, is a key figure for England. In 71 Tests, he has scored 4,631 runs at 37.04 as a dynamic left-handed batsman, including 10 hundred, and taken 163 wickets at 31.38.

Rishabh Pant Has Evolved More Over The Last 12-18 Months And Getting Desired Results

Rishabh Pant will be playing Tests in England for the second time in his career. Rishabh Pant has turned into a superstar of Indian cricket over the last 12-18 months thanks to his heroics on the Australia tour where India won with a depleted squad.

The wicketkeeper-batsman played key knocks especially in the last two Test matches at Sydney and Brisbane to bring glory to the country and is now gearing up to play in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.

The 23-year-old made his Test debut on the last England tour and he ended up scoring his maiden century in the format later in the series as well. Rishabh Pant has come a long way in the format since then amassing 1403 runs in 21 Tests at a brilliant average of 43.84 with three tons and six fifties.

Rishabh Pant Thinks It’s Been An Amazing Journey For Him As A Test Cricketer

Rishabh Pant is in England since June as he also played the marquee World Test Championship against New Zealand and also contracted COVID during his free time away from the game. However, he is perfectly fine now and is set to play the opening Test starting from August 4. Ahead of the series opener, BCCI posted a few clips of his training while interviewing him where the left-hander reflected on his journey at the international level so far.

“I think it’s been an amazing journey because there have been a lot of ups and downs. But it has been a good learning for me. As a cricketer you evolve, learning from your mistakes, improve yourselves, come back to the ground and perform well,” he said.

Rishabh Pant, who had not stayed in the team hotel during the 20-day break period, tested positive on July 8. He was asymptomatic and was in isolation. Rishabh Pant fully recovered after completing a 10-day quarantine and a string of negative Covid-19 tests.

The southpaw’s form with the bat has been one of the major reasons behind India reaching the WTC final. The wicketkeeper-batsman has amassed 662 runs in 11 Tests at an average of 41.37 in the WTC cycle.

Rishabh Pant Thinks He Has Evolved More And Getting The Desired Results

Rishabh Pant was just 20 years old when he played his first Test and it was a dream come true for him wearing the whites for the country. But the journey was not easy for the youngster as he was out of form for quite some time in international cricket. Speaking about the same Rishabh Pant stated that he was evolved as a cricketer over the last 12 months or so and felt that one should trust the process and the results will come.

“I think as a cricketer, I have evolved more what I have been doing in last one year or so. You keep doing your processes right but sometimes you don’t get the result. But you have to trust your process and keep doing the same thing again and again. I have been getting the results now so that’s the happy part,” Pant further added.

Rishabh Pant continued his love affair with Australia on India’s last tour in 2020-21. With the team battling multiple adversities and injuries, he scored 97 runs off 118 balls in the third Test and an unbeaten 89 in the fourth Test in Brisbane and was adjudged Man of the match, as India won the match and series.

Rishabh Pant was picked in the playing XI again ahead of Wriddhiman Saha for the home Test series against England. In the four Tests, he scored 270 runs at an average of 54.00, including one century and two fifties. He batted at a strike rate of 84.11 in the four-match series, which India won comprehensively 3-1.

Chris Woakes Reveals ECB Officials Apologised To Him For Taxi Fiasco

Chris Woakes, England’s pace bowling all-rounder has revealed that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officials have apologi\sed to him for making him take a taxi that ultimately ruined his winter.

Chris Woakes was told to share a cab with spin all-rounder Moeen Ali from Birmingham to Heathrow Airport ahead of England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in January. The 32-year-old had to isolate for a week when his fellow passenger tested positive for COVID-19 after they arrived in the island nation.

Chris Woakes Reveals He And Moeen Ali Were Put In An Unfortunate Situation And Vented His Frustration

Chris Woakes was ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle which eventually saw him miss every game in winter despite being voted player of the summer last season. The all-rounder recalled being frustrated with the hapless turn of events, adding that missing the winter season felt like a ‘waste’ of form to him.

Chris Woakes has acquired an apology from England over his taxi-sharing drama. The England star was dominated out after sharing a taxi with Moeen Ali, who contracted Covid-19.

“It was a big moment and there have been apologies but we were put in an unfortunate situation and I missed out because of that. I vented my frustration at the time. No stone has been left unturned during COVID-19 but that’s the one thing we did not get right. I paid the price for that.”

Chris Woakes feels he could have been a part of the playing XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka.

“I thought I was a shoo-in for the first Test. It doesn’t mean I would have then played all Tests but I would have had a chance to put my hand up and put in a strong performance. Not playing all winter after the summer I had, feels like a waste. You want to make the most of your form when you’re hot,” Woakes was quoted saying by Daily Mail.

After winning the two Tests in Sri Lanka, England lost the four-match test series in India. Moeen Ali featured in the India series for a solitary test before controversially heading home under the workload-management policy.

Chris Woakes Decided To Take A Break To Be With His Family Which Effectively Ruled Him Out Of Recent 2 Tests Against New Zealand

Chris Woakes also missed the recent two-test match series against New Zealand which the Kiwis won but admitted that he had himself to blame for this one. The ECB offered the players, who played in IPL 2021, a break from the home series, and Chris Woakes accepted it to be with his family.

“The IPL was very much on my shoulders. But it was tricky. The tests were scheduled late and as soon as I got out of isolation I would have had to play for Warwickshire after just a few days at home. It was in our hands and I decided a break with my family would do me good in the long run,” he added.

Chris Woakes has now been named in the squad for England’s T20 series against Sri Lanka. If given the opportunity, he will feature in a T20I after almost six years.

England has recalled Chris Woakes, David Willey, and Liam Dawson to their T20I squad to face Sri Lanka later this month. Chris Woakes has not played T20 cricket for England since 2015 but comes in as one of three changes from the India tour in March, with Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Reece Topley ruled out through injury.

England’s Batting Was Fragile And They Have No Chance In Ashes: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan, former England skipper came down heavily on the Joe Root-captained home team after they lost to New Zealand by eight wickets in the second Test on Sunday, saying the batting was “fragile”.

New Zealand won the two-Test series 1-0 — their first series triumph in England in 22 years. The win also pushed New Zealand back to the number one spot in Test rankings and gave them a boost ahead of the World Test Championship final against India from June 18.

Michael Vaughan: England Can’t Play Ashes With This Fragile Batting Line-up

The first Test between England and New Zealand had ended in a draw while the second was won by the Kiwis as the team reclaimed the top rank in Test rankings. Michael Vaughan, who has played 86 Tests for England, said if the England team continues to underperform, it will have no chance in the Ashes later this year in Australia.

“They now have just five chances to sort the batting out before the Ashes. They can’t arrive in Australia with a batting line-up this fragile. They’d have no chance. This batting line-up is fragile and we have to now start looking at players and wondering if they are good enough because they keep getting out cheaply,” Michael Vaughan said on the BBC Test Match Special.

Despite winning the Cricket World Cup in July 2019 for the first time, England had also been criticized for its fragile top-order in Tests. The retirement of opener Alastair Cook in August 2018 ensured potential top-order batsmen Rory Burns, Joe Denly, and Jason Roy were able to secure a place in the side. The 2019 series was eventually drawn 2–2, with Australia retaining the Ashes. The 2021 Ashes series is scheduled for December 2021 through January 2022.

Michael Vaughan: Everything Has Gone Downhill For England After They Won The 1st Test Against India In India

England will get a chance to redeem themselves when they take on the Virat Kohli-led India in a five-match Test series in August-September this year.

“England have tinkered too much. Everything has gone downhill for England since they went up 1-0 in India. Don’t muck about with Test cricket. England isn’t a good enough team to muck about,” Michael Vaughan added.

Zak Crawley-Twitter
Zak Crawley-Twitter
Zak Crawley is having a poor run as he averaged a mere 8.75 against Sri Lanka, 16.75 against India, and 5.25 against New Zealand in the ongoing Test series, but is still being persisted with. Rory Burns, despite his 132 and 81 in the two Tests, averaged a mere 5 against Pakistan and 14.5 against India in the two preceding series. Dom Sibley’s average hasn’t been above 35 in any of the series against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and New Zealand.
England won the first Test by 227 runs, and India won the second Test by 317 runs, to level the series at 1–1. The third Test, a day/night fixture, was completed inside two days, with India winning by ten wickets. The loss meant that England could no longer qualify for the final of the World Test ChampionshipIndia won the fourth and final Test by an innings and 25 runs, taking the series 3–1.

Virat Kohli Reveals Managing Workload Reason For Not Using Hardik Pandya As A Bowling Option

Virat Kohli heaped rich praise on England duo Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, saying the 175-run stand between them hurt their chances despite posting a reasonably stiff total on board. The partnership knocked them out of the contest on Friday. India missed Hardik Pandya’s bowling as the lack of the 6th bowling option hurt them.

India was in desperate need of a 6th bowling option in the 2nd ODI when they were defending 336 as the duo of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow were taking spinners Krunal Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav apart to the cleaners. The two spinners gave away more than 150 runs in 16 overs between them but India did not use Hardik Pandya’s services despite picking him in the playing XI.

Virat Kohli: In ODIs, It’s About Managing Hardik Pandya’s Workload As It’s Important To Have Him Fit

There was no place to hide for the two spinners as Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow hit 17 sixes between them in a match-winning 175-run stand for the 2nd wicket that took the game away from India. England gunned down the 337-run target with 39 balls and 6 wickets to spare on Friday.

Only pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Prasidh Krishna entered the wickets column for India as England made light work of the target after a big-hitting display of the top order which saw England level series 1-1.

Virat Kohli

Shedding light on India’s decision to not use Hardik Pandya as the extra bowling option despite their other bowlers leaking plenty of runs, Virat Kohli said it was more about workload management for the all-rounder as the T20 World Cup and World Test Championship final are slated to be held in the year.

“We need to manage his body. Need to understand where we need his (Hardik’s) skillset. We did utilize him in the T20Is but in the ODIs, it’s about managing his workload. We have Test cricket in England coming up too. So it’s important for us to have him fit,” Virat Kohli after India’s 6-wicket defeat.

It was surprising to see Hardik Pandya not getting to bowl as he had begun bowling in the T20I series against the same opponents after recovering from multiple injury setbacks. In fact, Hardik Pandya played a key role with the ball in India’s 3-2 win in T20Is, bowling 17 overs and conceding at less than 7. He picked 3 scalps averaging 39.33.

Virat Kohli Praises Ben Stokes And Jonny Bairstow As Their Hitting Was One Of The Best One Ever Witness And There Weren’t Too Many Chances

Jonny Bairstow hit 124 and Ben Stokes scored 99 as England went on the rampage and proved why they are rated No. 1 in the ODI format. The 2019 World Cup champions stuck to their fearless approach despite suffering a collapse in the first ODI by 66 runs.

Virat Kohli credited the two England batsman, saying the onslaught from Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow is one of the best he has witnessed in recent times. Jonny Bairstow scored 124 off 112 balls and Ben Stokes fell 1 run short of a century but he had done the hard work and damage by scoring at a strike rate of 190.38.

“We did falter a bit at times but mostly, that was some of the best hittings that you’ll ever see. We never had a chance during their partnership, that’s how good they were. Tonight was a case of lack of execution at certain stages but they didn’t give us anything. It’s rare to play at such a high strike-rate and not give any chances,” Virat Kohli added.

It was tough to see spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya leaking runs without any sort of control. While Kuldeep Yadav finished with figures of 0 for 84 in 10 overs, Krunal Pandya gave away 72 runs in just 6 overs and he too went wicketless.

England has named a 14-player squad for the three-match One-Day International series against India in Pune.

Three additional players – Jake Ball, Chris Jordan, and Dawid Malan – will travel with the squad as cover. All these players have been in India for the Twenty20 International series in Ahmedabad.

England’s Jofra Archer Returns To England For Right Elbow Injury And Wasn’t Named In 14 Man Squad

Jofra Archer is returning to the UK for further management and investigation of his right elbow injury. His elbow issue has deteriorated over the course of the 5 matches Twenty20 International series and made it increasingly challenging for him to maintain performance levels. He has been deemed unfit for selection for the ODI series that features matches on 23, 26, and 28 March.

The ECB medical team will assess the player and, together with the pacer, develop a treatment plan and a return-to-play schedule in due course. As a consequence, Jofra Archer will miss the start of this year’s Indian Premier League. England’s 14 member ODI squad doesn’t feature Joe Root but legspinner Matt Parkinson earns a recall after a year.

He has not played an ODI since playing the two games in his debut series against South Africa in February 2020. Liam Livingstone and Reece Topley have also been added to the ODI squad. They were a part of England’s T20I squad but did not play any game.

Here’s England’s Squad

Eoin Morgan (Middlesex) (captain), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Tom Curran (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Matt Parkinson (Lancashire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), Reece Topley (Surrey), Mark Wood (Durham). Also traveling with the squad: Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Dawid Malan (Yorkshire).

Prasidh Krishna, Krunal Pandya Named In India’s ODI Squad

Prasidh Krishna, the 25-year-old quick from Karnataka, had limited exposure of playing just nine first-class games since his debut in 2015 but has been a prominent name in limited-overs formats for a while, having played 48 List A games (81 wickets at an average of 23.07) and 40 T20s (33 wickets at 35.84 and an economy rate of 8.49). A part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up since 2018, he has played 24 games for the franchise in the IPL, returning 18 wickets with an economy rate of 9.33.

Prasidh Krishna and Krunal Pandya are among the surprising inclusions as BCCI has named India’s squad for their upcoming ODI series against England. Krunal Pandya, who has played 18 T20Is, earned his maiden ODI call-up by scoring two hundred and as many fifties in five games for Baroda. Krunal Pandya has played 18 T20I so far and has 121 runs and 14 wickets to his name. Mohammed Siraj and Suryakumar Yadav also found their names in the squad.

Here’s India’s squad

Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), KL Rahul (WK), Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur.
