The scheduled plan for this match was Papa Shango to interfere during this match and let it to go to a disqualification result. But there were a lot of controversies surrounding this match, as Papa Shango entered quite late in the match than his scheduled time. This match was also the only main event in wrestlemania history which went to disqualification.

These are some of the reasons why this match is considered as one of the worst WrestleMania main events in the history of the WWE. As it is known to all, the character of Papa Shango was portrayed by Charles Wright, the same person who played the character of The Godfather. This Botched up finish to this match is still considered as one of the worst outcomes in the history of Wrestlemania.

The Godfather who is also a former WWE Intercontinental Champion recently spoke to Midnight Hustle podcast where he talked about his appearance on WrestleMania VIII as Papa Shango. He also said Hulk Hogan is not the good guy people think he is. He said;

“Oh yea, I got thrown into the wolves especially with Sid. Sid was supposed to a job for Warrior and he quit, this and that. They had nobody else with heat on them so I kind of got thrown to the dogs but that’s business and I’m a businessman. It is what it is.

“On the thing on being late, they just sent me late. I never even knew I was late. I just knew that they just sent me and I was supposed to go. Like I said, I was going through a bad divorce at that time so Hogan, Warrior, Sid, none of that sh** meant anything to me.

“Nothing. I didn’t care about Hogan. Hogan wasn’t no friend of mine, he still isn’t. Hogan is Hogan. He’s not the good guy people think he is, I’ll let it go at that.”

“So, I always had another reason to make money, so I would come and go. There’s all types of thing. But like you said, it’s memorable. People still remember it, so that’s cool because it wasn’t around long. And for people to still to be talking about it today, that’s pretty cool.”

I worked out hard, I’m like, ‘We going to have some fun now, I’m going to be a lot more serious this time.’ I was probably 285, I was in really good shape. I show up to TV, took these pictures, and they say, ‘Vince wants to talk with you.’

“I was like, ‘Cool! I want to talk with Vince!’ I go in there, right, and Vince was like, ‘Charles, change of plans. We’re going to put you in the Nation of Domination. You and Faarooq are going to wrestle Undertaker, and you’re going to go over.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ And he goes, ‘We have this outfit made for you.’ [Laughs] Okay, I don’t know how most people would take it. I said, ‘You’re the boss, you’re paying me. Let’s do it.”

“So, when it came to the Hall of Fame, my wife’s like, ‘Are you gonna write a speech?’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m just going to go off the cuff, I’m going to hit this, I’m going to hit this,’ and I’m telling her, ‘I’m going to put you over like Rover, I’m just going to just tell everybody all about how you were for the gimmick, and the originator of the gimmick.’

“So, I get up there and I started having fun, and I’m doing my thing. My grandson was there, and it was his birthday. So there was a part where I wanted the whole audience to say happy birthday to him, and then after that I was going to hit my wife, and how she was the creator and everything, and put her over.

Godfather

“Well, the thing with my grandson went so well that I skipped the part with my wife somehow, and I went on to the finish. The second, the second that I walked off I said, ‘Oh Hell, I forgot to mention my wife!’ My wife… we’ve been married 20 years, she is everything. I went to the first person I saw, ‘Did I mention my wife, did I mention my wife?’ They said we don’t think so. So I did my Hall of Fame speech and never mentioned my wife.

“So that’s one thing… that’s a screw-up that I can’t fix,” Godfather said. “I just… every chance I get… that’s one thing I missed. I wish I would’ve put her over because she is so much more of The Godfather than me just being out there, being silly and having fun, and she did the costumes, the outfits, the jewelry. Honey, I love you to death, I’m so sorry. I know I screwed up, please forgive me. Because she still holds it against me, because anytime something bad happens she goes, ‘Well, at least he mentioned her.’”
