Virat Kohli To Lead India Against England? Fans Urge BCCI To Name Him As Stand-in Captain

Several fans have called for former India skipper Virat Kohli to be made the stand-in captain in the upcoming rescheduled Test against England.

Team India’s preparations for the forthcoming Test against England have been rocked by their skipper Rohit Sharma’s Covid-19 diagnosis. The batting star was tested positive after he took a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). The BCCI confirmed the development on Sunday morning.

According to a BCCI statement, “Rohit has tested positive in the Rapid Antigen Test in Leicester, England. His test was conducted on Saturday, June 25. He’s been placed under isolation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team supervising his health.”

Virat Kohli to replace Rohit Sharma as captain?

Rohit Sharma is likely to recover in time for the upcoming Test against England. The much-anticipated game is scheduled to start on July 1 in Birmingham. There are, however, slim chances that he might not recover in time for the game.

In such a scenario, Team India will not only have to find a new stand-in opener but will also have to appoint a new captain. KL Rahul was named as the vice-captain when the squad was announced in May. However, Rahul is also out of action due to groin injury.

As of now, there is little clarity over who would lead the team if Rohit fails to play the upcoming Test. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Rishabh Pant might be in contention to don the captain’s hat in Rohit’s absence.

Several fans, however, want Virat Kohli to lead the team for one last time in case Rohit fails to recover. Kohli stepped down as Test captain earlier this year after the series loss in South Africa. He was the captain when India visited England last year for the five-match Test series.

The series had to be postponed after the fourth Test due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp. The fifth Test is now set to be played next month. Kohli led the team brilliantly and has put India on the verge of winning their first Test series in England since 2007.

India are leading the series 2-1 and a draw in the upcoming game would be enough for them to seal the series. The BCCI is yet to name a vice-captain for the upcoming game but the fans want Kohli to don the skipper’s hat for one last time.

Here are some of the reactions from the fans:

India Tour of England 2022: Mayank Agarwal Added To Test Squad After Rohit Sharma’s Covid-19 Diagnosis

Opening batsman Mayank Agarwal has been added to Team India’s Test squad for the forthcoming rescheduled Test against England.

Team India have called-up Mayank Agarwal for the England Test after skipper Rohit Sharma was tested positive for Covid-19. The BCCI, on Sunday, announced that Rohit tested positive after taking a Rapid Antigen Test on Saturday.

Rohit is now in a race against time to be fit for the crucial Test against England. As of now, there is a big possibility that he might not recover in time for the upcoming game that is scheduled to start on July 1 in Birmingham.

In his absence, Team India will have to name a new captain as well as find a new opener for the team. Recent media reports suggested that Hanuma Vihari or Srikar Bharat could open the innings but it seems the team-management wants a specialist opener to open against the high-flying hosts.

Mayank Agarwal added to India squad:

Originally, there were three openers in the Test squad that was announced in May. Apart from Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill were named in the team. However, Rahul was ruled out of the game due to a groin injury while Rohit is now doubtful for the game too.

That leaves only Gill as the specialist opener in the squad. And according to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Mayank Agarwal has now been added to the squad for the Test. In case Rohit fails to recover in time for the game, Agarwal looks set to open the innings alongside Gill.

The right-handed batsman was dropped from the Test team following a string of poor performances. His last Test appearance had come during the home series against Sri Lanka in March this year. In three innings against the Island Nation, he had registered scores of 33, 4 and 22.

Agarwal has not scored a Test fifty in his last 8 innings while he has scored only one century in his last 24 innings. He would be desperate to prove himself if he gets a chance against England. Another failure will further derail his international career.

Meanwhile, missing Rohit will be a huge blow for Team India. He was one of India’s performer during the first four Tests last year. In 4 Tests, he had smashed 368 runs at an average of 52.27 including a hundred at The Oval.

Rohit Sharma Replacement: Srikar Bharat Or Hanuma Vihari Likely To Replace Skipper As Opener If He Fails To Recover For England Test

Rohit Sharma replacement: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma might miss the upcoming rescheduled Test against England after testing positive for Covid-19.

India captain Rohit Sharma is likely to miss the upcoming Test against England after testing positive for Covid-19 on Saturday. His diagnosis was confirmed after he took a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

Rohit Sharma’s replacement:

With less than a week remaining before the Test against England gets underway, Rohit Sharma’s participation in the match looks highly doubtful. The Test is scheduled to be played from July 1 in Birmingham.

In case Rohit fails to recover in time, the Indian team-management will have to look for a replacement. The visitors are already short on openers for the forthcoming game. KL Rahul has already been ruled out of the game due to a groin injury. As of now, Shubman Gill is the only designated opener in the team.

If Rohit is ruled out of the game, stand-in opener Hanuma Vihari looks likely to replace him at the top of the order. Vihari is no stranger to opening the innings for Team India. He had opened the innings during the MCG Test against Australia in 2018. Vihari had only managed to score 8 and 13 on that occasion but had spent 80 minutes at the crease in the first innings, and nearly an hour in the second. His brave stay at the crease had helped Team India see off the new ball.

Srikar Bharat

Wicketkeeper-batsman Srikar Bharat is an option too especially after his impressive display in the ongoing warm-up game. The right-handed batsman scored a fighting unbeaten fifty in the first innings before opening the innings in the second innings where he played a feisty knock of 43.

Bharat added 62 runs for the first wicket while opening the innings with Gill. Overall, he faced 209 balls in the game and looked very confident while batting in the testing conditions.

Team India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant ignored the instruction and posed with the fans during the ongoing warm-up clash against Leicestershire.

Team India’s preparations for the upcoming Test against England have been rocked after their skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19. The BCCI confirmed that the batting star tested positive after a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday (June 25).

A release from BCCI stated that Rohit has been placed under isolation at the team hotel and in under the care of the board’s medical team. He will take an RT-PCR on Sunday to confirm and ascertain the severity of the infection.

And as Rohit recovers from Covid-19, a video of Rishabh Pant ignoring the instructions in order to meet fans has started circulating on the social media. The incident reportedly took place on day 3 of the ongoing warm-up game between India and Leicestershire.

There were clear instructions that Team India players would not sign autographs or take photos with the fans during the warm-up game. The decision was taken to ensure that players do not contract the Covid-19 virus. Pant, however, paid little attention to the instruction and posed with some young fans. In the video, he was seen signing a bat for a young fan before posing with a large group of fans.

Here is a video of the incident:

Rishabh Pant’s entertaining fifty in the warm-up game:

Rishabh Pant scored an impressive fifty in the first innings of the ongoing warm-up game. The wicketkeeper-batsman is playing from the Leicestershire camp in the game and made his presence felt with his fine knock.

The home side was reeling at 44 for 3 when Pant came out to bat and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Pant, however, scored a fine fifty to help Leicestershire post a respectable total of 44. He scored 76 runs off just 87 balls with the help of 14 fours and a six.

Meanwhile, India have put on a far better show with the bat in the second innings. After declaring their innings on 246 for 8 in the first innings, the visitors finished day 3 on 364 for 7. With Rohit not coming out to bat, Srikar Bharat opened the innings with Shubman Gill as the duo shared 62 runs for the first wicket.

Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja then scored fifties to warm-up in style ahead of the upcoming Test against England. At stumps, Jadeja was unbeaten on 56 while Mohammed Siraj was unbeaten on 1.

Rohit Sharma Covid-19: India Skipper Tests Positive For Covid-19, Doubtful For England Test

Rohit Sharma Covid-19 – Team India skipper Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid-19 and is now doubtful for the upcoming rescheduled Test against England.

Rohit Sharma faces a race against time in order to be fit for the forthcoming match against England after testing positive for Covid-19. The batting superstar tested positive as per the result of a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday (June 25).

A release from BCCI stated that Rohit has been placed under isolation at the team hotel and in under the care of the board’s medical team. An RT-PCR test has been scheduled for Sunday to confirm and ascertain the severity of the infection.

Prior to being tested positive for Covid-19, Rohit was involved in the ongoing warm-up game against Leicestershire. He opened the innings for Team India in first innings and scored 25 runs before being sent back by Roman Walker.

Rohit, however, did not come out to bat in the second innings on Saturday. With less than a week remaining before the Test against England starts, Rohit’s participation in the game looks highly doubtful.

Rohit Sharma Covid-19: Skipper’s Absence could be a huge blow for Team India:

In case Rohit Sharma fails to recover in time for the upcoming Test, it will be a huge blow for Team India. The visitors are already without their other regular opener KL Rahul, who is down with a groin injury. Missing Rohit will mean that Shubman Gill will be the only designated opener in the team. If Rohit fails to recover for the game, Gill is likely to open the innings alongside Cheteshwar Pujara.

Prior to Rohit’s diagnosis, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s arrival on the tour was delayed after he too tested positive before leaving India. There were also reports suggesting that Virat Kohli had tested positive too after arriving in the UK.

Recently, New Zealand have had to deal with a number of Covid-19 cases during their ongoing Test tour. Their skipper Kane Williamson had to miss the second Test after testing positive.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Test is the conclusion of the series from last year which was suspended after a Covid-19 outbreak in the India team. Rohit was one of India’s performer during the first four Tests last year.

In 4 Tests, he had smashed 368 runs at an average of 52.27 including a hundred at The Oval. India are leading the series 2-1 and are eyeing their first series win in England since 2007. A draw in the upcoming game would be enough for the visitors to clinch the series.

Watch: Team India Players Come Up With Stunning Gesture After Rishabh Pant’s Dismissal During Warm-up Game

Team India players came up with a brilliant gesture after Rishabh Pant’s entertaining knock while playing for Leicestershire during the ongoing warm-up game.

Rishabh Pant, on Friday (June 24), played a fine knock during the warm-up fixture between India and Leicestershire. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been playing for Leicestershire in the game.

He is one of the four players who are playing for the hosts. The other three Indian players who are representing Leicestershire are Cheteshwar Pujara, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer. The decision to include the Indian players in the opposition team was taken to ensure that all the players get the chance to prepare for the upcoming Test against England.

Batting first, Team India scored 246 for 8 on day one of the game before declaring their innings. On day 2, Leicestershire were off to a poor start as Mohammed Shami took two quick wickets to leave them reeling at 22 for 2.

Leicestershire kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reeling at 138 for 6 at one stage. Touching the 200-run mark was looking like a distant dream for them at that stage. But thanks to Rishabh Pant and some handy contribution from the lower order, Leicestershire managed to score 244.

Team India’s gesture for Rishabh Pant:

Leicestershire had lost 3 wickets for just 44 runs when Rishabh Pant came out to bat. The left-handed batsman kept losing partners at regular intervals but stood firm at his end. He scored 76 runs to help the home side cross the 200-run mark and post a respectable total.

Pant’s knock came off just 87 balls and was studded with 14 fours and a six. And Team India players’ reaction after Pant’s dismissal made it very clear that not only the fans but they too were impressed by his knock.

Pant lost his wicket while trying to play a big shot off Ravindra Jadeja. As soon as the fielder Shreyas Iyer completed the catch, Jadeja himself hugged Pant for his knock before the other players walked up to him and congratulated him.

Here is a clip of that incident:

Mohammed Shami celebrated Cheteshwar Pujara’s dismissal in a hilarious fashion after sending him back to the pavilion in the ongoing warm-up game between Team India and Leicestershire.

Cheteshwar Pujara is one of the four Indian players who are playing for Leicestershire in the ongoing 4-day fixture. The other three players are – Rishabh Pant, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah. The decision to include the Indian players in the opposition team was taken to ensure that every player gets an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Test against England.

Pujara came out to bat on day two of the game. Prior to Leicestershire’s innings, Team India declared their innings on the overnight score of 246 for 8. The visitors started poorly with the bat and were reeling at 81 for 5 at one stage. At that stage, it looked like India would not even touch the 150-run mark.

Srikar Bharat

However, an unbeaten fighting fifty from Srikar Bharat helped India post a respectable total. Apart from Bharat, Virat Kohli (33) was the only Indian player to cross the 30-run mark. For Leicestershire, Roman Walker was the pick of the bowlers. He picked up 5 wickets for just 24 runs.

Mohammed Shami’s hilarious celebration:

Mohammed Shami gave India a solid start with the ball by taking two quick wickets. He first dismissed opener and opposition captain Samuel Evans for just 1 before sending back his India teammate Cheteshwar Pujara for a 6-ball duck to reduce Leicestershire to 22 for 2.

On the second ball of the 9th over, Pujara wanted to cut a rising delivery from Shami. However, the ball was too close to his body and he chopped on to his stumps. And as Pujara turned back and started walking towards the pavilion, Shami decided to have some fun.

The India bowling star ran towards Pujara and jumped on his back while celebrating the wicket. Shami then said something to Pujara before walking towards his teammates to celebrate the wicket.

Here is a clip of the incident:

Talking about the game, Leicestershire were on 88 for 4 at the time of compiling this report. Rishabh Pant and Rishi Patel were batting in the middle for the hosts.

Michael Vaughan Brutally Trolls Virat Kohli After He Fails To Perform Joe Root’s ‘Bat Magic’ Trick

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has brutally trolled Virat Kohli after the latter failed to do a trick with the bat that was recently done by Joe Root.

Virat Kohli was in action on Thursday as Team India locked horns against Leicestershire in the ongoing 4-day warm-up fixture. The former India skipper had to come out to bat quite early as India’s top-order failed to do well.

Kohli came out to bat at number four after both the openers – Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma – departed cheaply. Gill was out for 21 while skipper Rohit returned to the pavilion after scoring 25 off 47 balls.

And just like Gill and Rohit, Kohli too could not score big. Just like the openers, he too got the start but failed to capitalise on it. Kohli returned to the pavilion after a controversial lbw decision from the umpire cut short his stay at the crease. Prior to his departure, the batting superstar scored 33 off 69 balls with the help of 4 boundaries and a six.

Michael Vaughan trolls Virat Kohli:

During his short stay at the crease, Virat Kohli tried his hands at the recent bat trick performed by Root. During the fourth innings of England’s first Test against New Zealand, Root had left the cricket world in disbelief with his physics defying trick.

Standing at the non-striker’s end, Root had his bat almost hovered as it stood perfectly upright with absolutely no support from him. The video of the incident went viral on social media in no time.

Kohli tried to do a similar trick while standing at the non-striker’s end against Leicestershire but failed to get the desired result. The bat lost its balance as soon as Kohli took his hand off. And the video of this incident went viral too as fans came up with different kinds of reactions.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also decided to react to the incident and he used the opportunity to troll Kohli. Vaughan indirectly said that Kohli is no more in the same league as Root, tweeting:

“Virat not in the same Bat balancing league as Joe”

Root has indeed performed better with the bat than Kohli in the last couple of years or so. While Kohli has not hit a single century in international cricket since 2019, Root has hit 10 Test centuries since January last year.

Talking about the warm-up fixture, India ended day one on 246 for 8. At one stage, it looked like the tourists would not even touch the 150-run mark after they were reduced to 81 for 5. However, a fighting fifty from wicketkeeper-batsman Srikar Bharat helped India recover.

At stumps, Bharat was unbeaten on 70 and Mohammed Shami was giving him company on 18. The ongoing game is India’s only warm-up clash before they lock horns against England in the rescheduled Test. The Test is scheduled to be played from July 1 in Birmingham. After the Test, both the teams will play three T20Is and as many One-Day Internationals.

Watch: Rishabh Pant Celebrates Rohit Sharma’s Dismissal During Warm-up Match

Rishabh Pant could not keep his emotions in control after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the ongoing 4-day warm-up game between Team India and Leicestershire at Grace Road.

The warm-up game began on Thursday (June 23) with Rohit Sharma deciding to bat first after winning the toss. Rohit and Shubman Gill opened the innings for the tourists. Both the batsmen were looking in good touch early on but failed to capitalise on their decent start.

Gill was the first to depart. The young opener had to depart after he edged a delivery from Will Davis behind the stumps where Rishabh Pant took an easy catch. Gill was out for 21 off 28 balls. He hit 4 boundaries during his short stay at the crease.

He and Rohit added 35 runs for the first wicket. 15 runs later, it was Rohit’s turn to return to the pavilion. The India skipper lost his wicket after his miscued a pull shot. Rohit departed after scoring 25 off 47 balls with the help of 3 boundaries.

Rishabh Pant celebrates Rohit Sharma’s dismissal:

An interesting incident took place right after Rohit was dismissed. The India skipper wanted to pull a short delivery from Roman Walker but could only miscue it to the leg side. And as soon as the fielder on the leg side took the catch, Rishabh Pant was seen celebrating Rohit’s dismissal.

Rishabh was patiently waiting for the fielder to complete the catch and as soon as it happened, he turned back and said something to the fielder standing at first slip before pumping his fist in the air. Pant’s gesture made it pretty clear that he was expecting such a dismissal and might have said the same to the Leicestershire player.

Pant along with three other India players – Cheteshwar Pujara, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah – are playing for Leicestershire in the warm-up game. The decision has been taken to give all the Indian players a chance to participate in the warm-up game and prepare for the upcoming Test.

Here is a clip of the incident:

Meanwhile, India have made a poor start in the warm-up game. At lunch on day one of the 4-day contest, the visitors were reeling at 90 for 5. Virat Kohli (9*) and Srikar Bharat (6*) were in the middle, battling it out for the tourists.

Rohit Sharma’s Poor Form Continues As India Skipper Fails To Score Big In Warm-up Game

Rohit Sharma’s poor form has continued in the ongoing warm-up game against Leicestershire too as the India skipper failed to score big. The right-handed batsman entered the game on the back of a disastrous display in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

Before the IPL, he failed to deliver in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka too. While India won both the Tests, Rohit failed to score big in his first series as a Test captain. In three innings, he registered scores of 29, 15 and 46.

Watch: Rishabh Pant Takes Shubman Gill’s Catch As Latter Flops In Warm-up Game

It was followed by a disappointing campaign in the IPL. In 14 IPL games this year, the Mumbai Indians skipper managed just 268 runs at an average of 19.14 and a strike rate of 120.17.

It is also the first time that he failed to score a single half-century in an IPL season. His performance had an impact on the team’s fortunes as well. Mumbai suffered eight successive losses at the start of the season, and while they won four of their last six games, it was not enough to avoid a last place finish.

Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma (Credits: Twitter)

Following the IPL, he was given a much-needed break as he missed the home T20I series against South Africa. Fresh after the break, Rohit would have loved to register a big score before taking on England in the rescheduled Test. The batting superstar, however, failed to score big and was out for just 25.

Rohit’s knock came off 47 balls and was studded with 3 fours. Rohit once again lost his wicket while trying to play the pull shot. He tried to pull a shorter delivery from Roman Walker but could only miscue it to the leg side.

India in trouble:

Talking about the game, India are in big trouble after deciding to bat first in the warm-up game. At lunch on day one of the 4-day contest, the visitors were reeling at 90 for 5. Virat Kohli (9*) and Srikar Bharat (6*) were in the middle, battling it out for the tourists.

Shubman Gill

So far, only Rohit and his opening partner Shubman Gill (21) have managed to touch the 20-run mark. The other batsmen who were dismissed are Hanuma Vihari (3), Shreyas Iyer (0) and Ravindra Jadeja (13).
