Maradona better than Messi, says Pele

Rio de Janeiro, Dec 6: Argentine legend Diego Maradona was a better footballer than the country’s modern-day idol Lionel Messi, according to Pele.

Barcelona forward Messi — a five-time winner of the Balon d’Or, awarded to the world’s best player — is not even rated in the top three of football’s greatest players by the 78-year-old Brazilian.

“As far as I’m concerned, Maradona was one of the best players ever,” Pele said on Wednesday in an interview with the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper.

“If you ask me, ‘Was he better than Messi?’ Yes, he was. Much better. (Franz) Beckenbauer, (Johan) Cruyff are also better. They’re also excellent players.”

Pele and Maradona have not always seen eye to eye, but Pele said the pair now enjoy a “perfect” relationship.

The only man to win the World Cup three times, Pele is widely regarded as the best footballer of all time.

In recent years he has suffered a series of health problems, but said he is now feeling 100 per cent.

“I don’t feel any more pain, but I feel some weakness. I had some good legs and look how they are now,” the former Santos and New York Cosmos player said, Xinhua reported.

Pele also revealed that he spoke to compatriot Neymar about the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s penchant going to ground when tackled.

“It’s difficult to defend Neymar for all the things he does beyond playing football. I talked with him, I told him that in soccer, he’s got it. He had bad luck because the team didn’t win the World Cup and he was branded,” Pele said.

“I was with him twice in Europe. We talked and I told him: ‘In soccer, God gave you a gift, but what you did is what made it difficult.”

Argentina players hoping for Messi return

Buenos Aires, Nov 19: Argentina forward Paulo Dybala said that he and his Albiceleste teammates want Lionel Messi to return to the national team.

Messi has not represented his country since this year’s World Cup in Russia where the two-time world champions were eliminated by France in the last 16, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Barcelona forward has since declined to speak to the media about his Argentina future.

Albiceleste officials have repeatedly said that the 31-year-old will be given as long as he needs to keep away from international football.

“We want him to return,” Dybala told reporters on Sunday. “Everybody knows what Leo means to us, but (his decision) doesn’t depend on any of the players.”

Argentina will meet Mexico in a friendly in the western city of Mendoza on Tuesday. The sides also clashed on Friday, with Argentina winning 2-0 in the central Argentine city of Cordoba.

Messi scores twice to lead Barcelona over Tottenham 4-2

London, Oct 4: Lionel Messi had a brace in Barcelona’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on match-day 2 of the 2018-2019 Champions League.

The 90,000 people who packed into London’s Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night were treated to a master class by the Argentine international, though Spurs supporters could be forgiven for wishing that Messi had saved his heroics for another opponent.

Barça, without a win in their last three La Liga matches, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute after Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris came off his line in a failed attempt to intercept a Messi pass to Jordi Alba, who slipped the ball to Philippe Coutinho for the easy goal, reports Efe news.

Spurs seemed unable to react and found themselves trailing by two before the half-hour mark and once again, the goal began with Messi.

The Barça captain dropped a pass into the box that Luis Suarez controlled with his chest and left at the feet of Coutinho. The Brazilian kept the ball in play for an onrushing Ivan Rakitic, who went airborne to deliver a thunderous kick for 20 yards that beat Lloris.

Harry Kane clawed back a goal for Spurs seven minutes into the second half, evading defender Nelson Semedo to tuck the ball inside the far post, far out of the reach of Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Messi, who hit the post twice before Kane scored, restored the two-goal margin in the 56th minute with an assist from Alba.

But Tottenham fought back and Erik Lamela’s goal in the 66th minute reduced the deficit to 3-2.

Lucas Moura had two chances to equalize for the hosts and Barcelona girded for a late surge, but Messi would have the last word, getting his second of the night in stoppage time.

Barcelona lead Group B by virtue of a better goal difference than Inter Milan, who are tied on points with the Catalan club after beating PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Spurs and PSV are both without a point.

Earlier, Ross Barkley blasted a big statement saying his team-mate is better than Ronaldo and Messi right now. However, the Belgium star isn’t concerned with statistics or comparisons.

After the match against Liverpool, Hazard said:

“I don’t have (goal) targets to be fair – my only target is to win something every year. I want to win trophies. It is not important how many goals I score. You know me, I don’t care about that. I just want to enjoy my football and win games. At the moment I am scoring goals, that is why everyone is talking for me to be in the top three (players). It is a pleasure to be there.”

Eden Hazard

The playmaker also revealed what helps him perform better.

“It won’t be simple. Definitely not in the Premier League. I’m feeling good since the FA Cup final. Something you see. I play in strong teams, here with Chelsea and with Belgium who was very good at the World Cup, and that helps me to perform better too.”

Hazard is yet to sign a new contract with Chelsea. But at the moment, he is loving life at the Stamford Bridge.

“Even when the things are not going well, I try to be happy when I am on the pitch. That is why I like football. At the moment, we are winning games so it is more easy to smile but when I am on the pitch I just try to be happy. At the moment it is good. I am scoring goals, we are playing good, so I am enjoying it but we will see in the future.”

Messi to miss Argentina friendlies against Iraq, Brazil

London, Sep 25: Lionel Messi’s leave of absence from Argentina’s national team will extend to at least November, the Albiceleste’s interim coach Lionel Scaloni has said.

Speaking to reporters at FIFA’s The Best awards ceremony in London on Monday, Scaloni said Messi would not return for friendlies against Iraq and Brazil in Saudi Arabia next month, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Messi won’t be called up. I have spoken with him and it’s best that he doesn’t come back for now,” said Scaloni, who was appointed caretaker manager after the July sacking of Jorge Sampaoli.

Argentina will meet Iraq in Riyadh on October 12 and Brazil in Jeddah four days later. The two-time World Cup winners will then play their final matches of 2018 during FIFA’s November 12-20 international friendly window.

Messi was left out of Argentina’s squad for friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia earlier this month, has requested a break from international football following the team’s erratic World Cup campaign.

Argentina was eliminated in the round of 16 in Russia by eventual champions France, with Messi scoring just once in four matches.

90% of the People Thinks Griezmann is on the Same Level as Messi and Ronaldo – Lucas

Atletico Madrid forward, Antoine Griezman had made headlines a couple of days ago after he said he’s on the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, his France and Atletico team-mate, Lucas Hernandez has supported the forward, and he believes the same.

Lucas Hernandez has supported his team-mate Antoine Griezmann.

It all began when Antoine Griezmann did not get nominated for FIFA’s The Best top-three despite winning the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Frenchman is disappointed since then and also said he believes he shares the same table with Ronaldo and Messi. Many have criticised Griezmann after the statement including the Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos.

However, Lucas feels there was nothing wrong with the statement and claimed 90% of the world believes Griezmann is on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

“I think that 90% of the world believes that Griezmann is at the same level as Messi and Ronaldo. Maybe Sergio Ramos doesn’t like it, that Antoine has spoken his mind. We know that he defends his interests. He’s in a rival team, the team of the capital. We know that there’s a great rivalry between the teams and it’s normal that he defends his interests and we defend ours.”

Meanwhile, Griezmann didn’t have a good start to the season for Atletico. He has managed to score only one goal in the six matches he played. His side Atletico is also suffering, as they sealed only five points in their first five games.

Atletico Madrid will face Getafe on Saturday where they will get an opportunity to close the gap. Moreover, they will take on their city rivals, Real Madrid in the first Madrid derby of the season on 29th September.

So far as it looks, there would be some battle of words between Ramos, Lucas and Griezmann.

Sergio Ramos Criticizes Antoine Griezmann’s Huge Claim

Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos has criticised Antoine Griezmann after the player said he shares the same table with that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Griezmann feels he’s on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi.

The Atletico Madrid forward has been heavily criticised by many after making the considerable claim. The one who has done the most is his city rival’s captain. Ramos feels Griezmann should look some of his team-mates to learn values. The Real Madrid captain told Sky Sports,

“Ignorance makes you very bold. When I hear this kid talk, I remember players like (Francesco) Totti, Raul, (Gianluigi) Buffon, (Iker) Casillas, (Paolo) Maldini, Xavi or (Andres) Iniesta who have won everything but not a Ballon d’Or. Everyone is free to express their opinion, but I think he should take the advice of (Diego) Simeone, (Diego) Godin or Koke, who represent the values that serve them (Atletico Madrid) well. I have always said that he is a great player and I wish him the best.”

The Spanish captain has also responded to Gareth Bale’s comment on Ronaldo and explained what the Welshman meant.

“The hole he leaves has been filled, even though we know how big [that hole] is. We have a great squad. Cris gives you many things but maybe he takes things from you as well – very few, but some. We were more direct before, counterattacking, using his pace. Maybe now we’ve adapted to the squad: we have more possession, other ways of hurting opponents.”

He further added,

“We appreciate and feel affection for all the great players who have played for us – and he is one of them – but life goes on without them. We wish him the best, so long as it’s not against us. What can I say about Cris? He marked a wonderful era, he broke practically every record, but we can’t live off that.”

Sergio Ramos and his men have moved on wishing Ronaldo all the best. But it will be interesting to see how they cope up in the Champions League where Ronaldo made a huge contribution throughout his career in Los Blancos.

I’m Already on Same Level as Messi And Ronaldo – Antoine Griezmann

World-Cup winner, Antoine Griezmann has dropped a bombshell saying he is on the same level as that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Griezmann feels others players can get to the level of Ronaldo and Messi too.

However, the Ballon d’Or is determined by votes from the journalists, and the Frenchman believes it has more prestige and history. Griezmann told AS,

Antoine Griezmann

“I think the Ballon d’Or has more prestige and history. Here’s three months left to give everything. It is clear that I am a different player than Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar or [Kylian] Mbappe. I’m at the top, but I can improve. I seek to be as complete as possible. I’m not going to score 50 goals. But I’m looking to help offensively and work for the team.”

The player also claimed he already sits with Ronaldo and Messi and more players will be on the same level as them shortly.

“I think I already sit where Messi and Cristiano are. And I know other players are going to come for sure. I want to improve, I want to win and I want to continue like this, playing in this way.”

The 27-year old forward was heavily linked with Barcelona in the 2018 summer transfer window. In the end, he decided to reject the La Liga champions and announced it in his through a documentary. He finally broke his silence and revealed he rejected Barcelona to give tribute to his team-mates and head coach, Diego Simeone.

“Saying no to Barcelona gives greatness to Atletico, Cholo [Simeone], my team-mates. I trust them, and we contribute to each other a lot. I stay where they give me more love. If it was for money, I would have gone to China. It was a very important decision for my future. You do not only look at one year; you do it thinking about four or five. It wasn’t as easy as choosing a candy.”
