Mohammad Azharuddin Reinstated As HCA President

Mohammad Azharuddin was on Sunday re-instated as President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association by Ombudsman Justice (retd) Deepak Verma, who also “temporarily disqualified” five members of the Apex Council, which had suspended the former India captain.

The drama surrounding the Hyderabad Cricket Association reached a high point as HCA Ombudsman temporarily disqualified 5 members of the Apex Council which had suspended state body president Mohammad Azharuddin.

In an interim order, the HCA Ombudsman temporarily disqualified five members of the HCA Apex Council –K John Manoj, Vice President, R Vijayanand, Naresh Sharma, Surender Agarwal, Anuradha. The Apex Council had “suspended” Mohammad Azharuddin for alleged violation of its constitution. Allegations of Conflict of Interest were levelled against Mohammad Azharuddin.

Justice (retd) Deepak Verma in his order pointed out that the complaint against Mohammad Azharuddin was not forwarded to Ombudsman and in effect has no legal validity.

“Apex Council on its own accord cannot take such a decision. Therefore, I deem it appropriate to set aside the resolution (if any) passed by these five members in suspending the duly elected President, issuing a show-cause notice and direct them to refrain from any subsequent actions against the President of HCA, Mohammed Azharuddin,” Justice (retd) Verma, said.

“Therefore, I direct that Mohammed Azharuddin shall continue as President and all complaints against office bearers shall only be decided by the Ombudsman.

“From the aforesaid facts and features, it is clearly reflected that instead of encouraging the game of Cricket, each one is playing their own politics for the reasons best known to them. Thus, it defeats the very purpose for which HCA has been formed”, Justice (retd) Verma noted.

Regarding the five Apex Council members, Justice Verma in the order said, “I would like to make it clear that, just because these five members believe on their own accord that I am not ombudsman does not take away my powers which are now been confirmed by the High Court judgment and the minutes of the 85th AGM as well”.

“These members cannot evade the due process of law just by stating that they don’t agree to my appointment. It is clear from the above, that these members have malafide intentions and do not want smooth functioning of HCA.

“It is for this reason and reasons mentioned above, I hereby direct that these members are temporarily disqualified from performing their duties as office bearers of the Apex Council till the time these Complaints attain finality,” the Ombudsman said.

Mohammad Azharuddin is a legendary former Indian skipper who has been heading Hyderabad Cricket Association since September 2019. He had been suspended as the HCA president last month after allegations of violation of HCA’s constitution.

Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin can breathe a sigh of relief after being reappointed as the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association. The decision comes nearly a month after a five-member HCA Apex Council suspended him.

Mohammad Azharuddin’s Complaint Not Forwarded To Ombudsman Thus Ruling Out Any Legal Validity

Ombudsman Justice (retd) Deepak Verma came up with the decision to reinstate the former skipper. At the same time, the five members of the Apex Council had been disqualified briefly in an interim order released by Justice Verma. Mohammad Azharuddin’s suspension came after it was alleged that he had violated HCA’s constitution.

Virat Kohli Shouldn’t Be Over Aggressive: Kapil Dev

Virat Kohli embarks upon his third tour of England, so he would be no stranger to the conditions there, but former India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has interesting advice for the current skipper, which will help him excel.

Virat Kohli has been on two tours of England since he made his Test debut for India. In the first tour in 2014, he was all over the place, scoring just 134 runs from 10 innings, statistically the India captain’s worst in a three-Test series or more. However, four years later, Virat Kohli turned it around in style, scoring a mammoth 593 runs from five Tests, including two centuries and three fifties.

Virat Kohli Expected By Kapil Dev To Excel In England Tour

Three years later, as Virat Kohli will look to lead from the front in his third tour of England, former India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has advised the current skipper not to be over-aggressive, which will help him excel.

“I expect him to excel. Can you really shackle him? He is a natural when it comes to adapting but I would caution him to not be over-aggressive. He will have to measure it session by session. He’ll be better off waiting for his moments of dominance,” Kapil told Mid-Day in an interview.

“He will get his runs with a bit of patience. Trying too hard and too early doesn’t work in England where you need to watch the movement of the ball. If you play seam and swing well, show patience, you will succeed in England.”

India is set to travel to the UK for a long tour. They first face New Zealand in the final of the World Test Championship in Southampton starting June 18 before proceeding to play hosts England in a five-Test series starting August 4. India has faced defeats in their last three Test tours of England.

Kapil Dev: India Played Exceptionally Well In 1986 Tour

They last won a Test series in the UK in 2007, whereas prior to it, they had triumphed in England way back in 1986, when Kapil Dev was the captain. Under Kapil Dev, India won the series 2-0, and recalling the historic series, the former India all-rounder explained what the current team should keep in mind while playing in England.

“We played exceptionally good cricket. I want this team to remember that England in England is tough. They are a very good team when playing at home but then, it will also depend on how the Indian bowlers adapt to the conditions and pitches. The swing will be very rewarding and here I feel England is one step ahead of India,” explained Kapil Dev.

India beat England 2–0 in the Test series and won the ODI Texaco Trophy that by virtue of a faster run-rate despite England having squared the series after losing the first game. India’s Dilip Vengsarkar scored a total of 360 runs in the Test series and was named player of the series alongside England’s Mike Gatting(293 runs).

In the ODI series, England’s David Gower (81 runs) was named player of the series alongside India’s Ravi Shastri. India’s Mohammed Azharuddin also scored 90 runs. The significance of the tour was considerable for Indian cricket too. India had won only four out of 52 Tests since the start of the decade. Moreover, under Kapil Dev’s leadership, the side had not won any of its 20 Test matches.

India could have gone on to win 3-0 in Birmingham but they failed to push the initiative on the final day. However, the match will be remembered for the wicket-taking abilities of Chetan Sharma. To this day, he remains the only Indian to have taken 10 wickets in a Test in England. Chetan Sharma finished with 16 scalps.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan cricket team, led by Babar Azam, will have no difficulty in travelling to India for the ICC T20 World Cup in October as the government is set to grant visas to the players from the neighbouring nation. It has been learnt that BCCI secretary Jay Shah has informed the Apex Council about the government’s decision on giving visas to the Pakistan players.

MS Dhoni Combined Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly’s Quality To Form Match-Winning Team: Rashid Latif

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif has heaped praise on Mohammad Azharuddin’s captaincy for nurturing Sourav Ganguly as a captain. He also said that MS Dhoni developed his leadership qualities after learning traits from Ganguly and Azharuddin.

While talking on his YouTube channel, Rashid Latif said that he had great respect for Azharuddin, who is the most controversial Indian captain. He believes that Azharuddin played a great role in developing Ganguly as a captain under whom great players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid played.

I respect Mohammad Azharuddin a lot. He served Indian cricket for a long time and left someone like Sourav Ganguly. Azharuddin played a great role in developing Ganguly as a captain. Greats like Sachin and Dravid played under Ganguly,” Latif said in a YouTube show called Caught Behind.

Latif expressed that Azharuddin shaped Ganguly. But he also said that Ganguly’s leadership qualities were in-born. He added that the recently retired Indian captain Dhoni combined the traits of his successors and built a match-winning team. The cricketer-turned-YouTuber said that MSD instilled a winning mindset in Team India.

“Then if you have a look at Dhoni’s career, it depended somewhat on Ganguly. The kind of mindset and leadership qualities Ganguly had was in-born.

“Mohammad Azharuddin made Ganguly. And Dhoni combined both of their qualities and created his own style according to modern-day cricket. He got the match-winning belief in the team, developed that culture in the team, instilled that winning mindset,” he added.

Applauding the World Cup-winning captain, Rashid Latif said that leaders like Dhoni take risks and back players to form a match-winning team.

“Dhoni won three world titles which no captain has ever done. Leaders like Dhoni took risks to take the team forward, he motivated young players. He tried to mold cricketers according to his character. Captains like this instill self-confidence in players,” Latif added.

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on 15 August. He will be seen playing for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL edition.

I Really Don’t Know The Reasons For Banning Me: Mohammad Azharuddin

Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has said he still does not know the reason behind him getting a life ban from the BCCI in 2000 which was later overturned by the court. Mohammad Azharuddin was banned for life in December 2000 after the BCCI had found him guilty in the infamous match-fixing scandal.

Mohammad Azharuddin had, reportedly, confessed to fixing matches in November that year before the BCCI decided to ban him for life. But after the ban, he decided to contest BCCI’s verdict and eventually won the legal fight in 2012  when the Andhra Pradesh High Court revoked the life ban and termed it “illegal”.

Mohammad Azharuddin has come a long way since then. Last year in September, he was elected as the president of Hyderabad Cricket Association. He had a stand named after him at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. In November, he rung the bell at the Eden Gardens ahead of the historic day-night Test against Bangladesh and was also included in a group of former cricketers honoured with a lap around the iconic ground.

But while he has now been fully integrated with the game, Mohammad Azharuddin still does not know the reason behind him getting the life ban at the first place. Speaking to cricketpakistan.com website, Mohammad Azharuddin said: “I don’t want to blame anyone for what happened. I really don’t know the reasons for banning me…”

“…But I had decided to fight it and I am grateful that after 12 years I got cleared. I felt very satisfied when after being elected president of Hyderabad association I went and attended the BCCI AGM meeting,” he added.

No regrets:

Mohammad Azharuddin’s career finished at 99 Tests during which he scored 6125 runs at an average of 45. He also played 334 ODIs, scoring 9378 runs at 36.92 in an illustrious career that spanned well over a decade. One more Test would have seen him join the special 100-Test club but the batting great has said he has no regrets over it.

“I am a firm believer in fate and whatever is in your destiny it happens. I look at this way that nowadays if a player is a class act he ends up playing more than 100 Tests. So I don’t think this record of 99 Test matches that I hold is going to be broken,” Mohammad Azharuddin said.

“I played for around 16 to 17 years and I captained for around 10 years. What more can I ask for,” he added.

There are some top international cricketers who have been banned after they have been alleged to be involved in the match-fixing or spot-fixing.

Here we are talking about the top five Indian cricketers who have been banned due to their involvement in the match-fixing allegation.

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Sharma hadn’t much successful story for the team India as he played only Test and 31 ODIs where he scored 53 and 424 runs respectively and also managed to take 15 ODI wickets between 1988 and 1993. However, the right-handed batsman was one of the greatest Indian domestic cricketers who scored 10120 runs in 129 matches with an incredible average of 67.46. He smashed 38 centuries and 36 half-centuries in his first-class career.

In 2000, Sharma was handed life-ban from the game for his involvement in the match-fixing. He was found guilty of having associations with bookmakers. However, later in 2014, Sharma was cleared from all the match-fixing charges.
