India vs South Africa 2020, ODI Series: Three Indian Players Who Might Get Maiden Call-Up

India’s cricket schedule has been busy ever since the start of 2020. The new year started with the T20I series against Sri Lanka and then, within a week after completing the ODI series against Australia, India toured New Zealand to play the full-fledged bilateral series.

Currently, the team is playing the two-match Test series against New Zealand. Seeing the hectic schedule, the team management might give rest to some regular players ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home.

Thus, it might also give much-needed opportunities to newcomers.

Here, we have listed three players who might earn the maiden call-up in the upcoming ODI series which played between 12th to 18th March.

3 Indian Players who might get a maiden call-up in South Africa ODIs:

Suryakumar Yadav:

Suryakumar Yadav, ODIs, South Africa

The Mumbai lad is in the eyes of selectors for a long time. The middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav has very well handled the pressure in the domestic circuit. Well,  giving many victories to the team, he had also banked on some prolific performances for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Yadav can be given a chance in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa as Kedar Jadhav can be rested.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has used the all-rounder Jadhav as a pure batsman. He hasn’t given chance to Jadhav, to bowl in the last ODI series against Australia.

Besides, the all-rounder was also not good with the bat. So, Suryakumar, who has more potential than Jadhav, can earn up the call for the impending home series.

Talking about Yadav’s credential, in 93 List A matches, he has scored 2447 runs at the striking rate of 99.63. In the shortest format, he has scored 3012 at a striking rate of 139.12.

AB de Villiers Likely To Make His Comeback Today, Might Be Named In National Squad For Australia Series

South Africa star batsman AB de Villiers is in line to make his international comeback today. There is every indication that he will be part of at least the T20 squad for the series against Australia that starts this Friday. South Africa announce their limited-overs team later today. Incidentally, his last international match came against Australia in 2018.

Following the series, he flew to India to play IPL 2018 and made the shocking announcement after returning back in May. As confirmed, De Villiers was available for the 2019 World Cup as well but his proposal was turned down.

A change in the team management has seen South Africa considering his comeback offer seriously and head coach Mark Boucher has, on occasions, confirmed that De Villiers will be back for the T20 World Cup.

The veteran cricket has been spending most time with his family – one of the reasons behind retirement. Barring IPL and Mzansi Super League, he hasn’t played complete season of any league he has been part of since retiring from international cricket. Also, he decided against participating in the Pakistan Super League 2020.

He is confirmed to play the complete season of IPL 2020 and might play an international fixture just before the league.

Faf du Plessis, South Africa

Apart from De Villiers, all eyes will also be on Faf du Plessis. The SA captain hasn’t played any white-ball game since World Cup 2019. He returned for Tests but has been rested from all limited-overs fixtures since July 2019.

It also remains to be seen if South Africa persist with Quinton de Kock as captain or will Plessis take over the charge if he returns.

Proteas host Australia in six limited-overs matches from Friday. The three T20Is will be played on February 21, 23 and 26 in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, respectively. Following the T20Is, the two teams will play three ODIs on February 29, March 4 and 7. South Africa also have a three-match ODI series lined up against India just before IPL 2020.

South Africa vs England 3rd T20I: SA vs ENG Dream11 Team, Playing XI, Fantasy Cricket Tips

Both the T20Is have been final over thrillers in the series so far and one can expect the third T20I going down the wire too. In the first game, South Africa prevailed in the final over as Lungi Ngidi successfully defended seven runs off the final six balls.

In the second T20I, Tom Curran kept his nerves and defended 15 runs – he got two wickets on the final two balls. Going into the third T20I, expect both the teams to make a couple of changes in their lineups.

Conditions –

The SuperSport park does not have much for the spinners. Hence, both the teams will look to bring in pacers at the expense of slow bowlers.

Here is the likely playing XI of both the teams –

South Africa:

Dale Steyn, Quinton de Kock

Dale Steyn is expected to walk back into the playing XI. The decision to rest him in the second T20I came as a surprise but South Africa have to manage his workload and give chances to other players as well. It will be interesting to see who makes way for the senior pacer in the decider.

Likely playing XI: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, JJ Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Dale Steyn, Beuran Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi

England:

The visiting team will surely look to move on from Joe Denly but for whom? Dawid Malan isn’t a number six batsman, so the think tank might go far Sam Curran – he can bat and bowl. Curran can also open; though England have as many as four openers in their line-up.

Likely playing XI: Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

India U19 Star Yashasvi Jaiswal Opens up on U19 World Cup 2020 Success

India U19 cricketing sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star performer in the recently-ended ICC U19 World Cup 2020. For his outstanding performance, Yashasvi was awarded as the Player of the Tournament. The 18-year old spills beans on his preparation ahead of the coveted tournament in South Africa.

In the six matches he played during the mega event, the opening batsman Yashasvi remained not out on three occasions. He also scored an unbeaten century against Pakistan in the semi-final and led his team to final. Also, he mustered four half-centuries in the tournament. All in all, he scored 400 runs, becoming the highest run-scorer in the event.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s preparation ahead of the recently-held U19 World Cup 2020:

On Saturday, while talking to PTI, he gives a glimpse of his preparation for South Africa’s bouncy pitches. He said that playing on the astro-turf pitches at home helped him to score more runs at the venue.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, India U19, ICC U19 World Cup 2020

“(His mentor) Jwala Sir had told me that you have to go and bag the player of the series award. We practiced a lot on how to play on bouncy tracks. We practiced on how to play short-balls and that helped me,” Jaiswal told PTI on Saturday.

“I was either playing or leaving short-balls. There is bounce on astro-turf wickets like how it is there, so I batted on astro-turf wickets and that worked,” said the 18-year-old, who dedicated his player of the series award to Jwala.

Youngster shows gratitude to selector:

Meanwhile, Jaiswal also thanked junior chief selector Ashish Kapoor who suggested that he could open the innings for India U-19.

“All the U-19 selectors helped me a lot. It was because of Ashish Kapoor sir that I was able to open. I would like to thank all the selectors and coaches,” he added.

However, India could not lift the ICC U19 World Cup 2020 title but some youngsters showed their skills at the age group level competition.

Beside Yashasvi, spinner Ravi Bishnoi, pacer Kartik Tyagi, and Atharva Ankolekar also came in limelight because of their remarkable talent.

Jacques Faul Urges South African Fans to ‘Respect’ Steven Smith, David Warner

David Warner and Steven Smith have contributed plenty to the victory of Australia in the game of cricket. But the 2018 incident of the ball-tampering scandal will forever overshadow their extraordinary batting feats. The same was witnessed during the ICC World Cup 2019 and Ashes as the spectators booed Smith and Warner for the mistake they committed in Cape Town.

Nearly two years before, Warner and Smith were banned by Cricket Australia (CA) for one-year each as they were involved in ball-tampering during the Cape Town Test in March 2018.

And now, on the same land, the two will be soon playing the bilateral series. Meanwhile, Cricket South Africa’s interim chief executive Jacques Faul has requested Proteas fans to “respect” Steve Smith and David Warner as the Australians return to the country for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal.

“I would plead with South African fans to respect our opponents and don’t go overboard with these things (referring to Smith and Warner),” Faul told The Herald.

“What happened last time the behavior was unfortunate. As much as we appreciate the support and you have to acknowledge the importance of people supporting these events I can only plead that people would treat players with respect.”

Further, Faul also warned the fans that they might be evacuated from the stadium for their wrong behaviour.

“Stupidity comes very naturally to certain people,” Faul said.

“If someone misbehaves it’s very tough. We have a very strict policy in terms of fan behaviour and we will evacuate people but the damage will have been done.

Smith and Warner flew to South Africa on Friday with the rest of Australia’s Twenty20 squad. South Africa and Australia will play three T20Is, starting on February 21 and three ODIs during the tour.

Mark Boucher Asserts MS Dhoni’s Captaincy Is An Excellent Example For Quinton de Kock

Recently, Quinton de Kock got the new responsibility of leading the South Africa team in the limited over format. South Africa’s coach Mark Boucher is delighted with the job of the wicketkeeper-batsman. He even feels that de Kock’s decision in the field gives a glimpse of the former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

After de Kock took up the leadership in T20Is and ODIs, the winning rate of Proteas has increased. In the recently-concluded ODI series against England, he took up some outstanding decisions, levelling the series with 1-1. While on Wednesday, he led the team to victory in the first T20I.

Mark Boucher heaps praise on Quinton de Kock:

Veteran Boucher has praised the captaincy skills of the youngster. He is also hopeful that de Kock will surely lead his country to new heights as Dhoni did for India. Boucher cites Dhoni as an example, who was given the charge ahead of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and later, had success in the 2011 World Cup.

“A lot of people questioned MS Dhoni when he was the captain of India but I think he has a great captaincy record. Quinny (De Kock) enjoys being in the game. On the field he leads well‚ he makes good captaining decisions and off the field, he is pretty chilled and that can be good for the youngsters,” Boucher told the media.

Quinton de Kock thinks out of the box: Mark Boucher

“Him opening the batting‚ keeping wicket and captaining can be sustainable in the lead up to the World Cup in 2023. On the field, we always knew that he has a very smart cricketing brain‚ he showed that with different field placings which I thought were very good. He thinks outside the box,” concluded Boucher.

The southpaw de Kock has scored runs in every format for his team. He scored a century in the first ODI and followed up with a half-century in the second ODI.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has imposed faith in him to look out for opportunities ahead of the 2020 T20 World Cup.

Faf du Plessis Opens Up His Thought About The Four-Day Test Match

The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) proposal of four-day Test cricket is trending in world cricket. While many are not supporting this idea, some top sides are supporting it. Unlike his national cricket board, Proteas captain Faf du Plessis is not supporting this proposal.

ICC and big full members are busy to revive Test cricket as its popularity has gone down. Day/night pink-ball Test match, ICC World Test Championship etc. are the parts of this activity. While a couple of four-day Test matches have already been tested, ICC wants to introduce it in the future World Test Championship.

However, many former cricketers are not supporting the four-day Test cricket. But, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) are supporting this crucial change in Test cricket as they have already played it.

My opinion is that I am a fan of Test cricket going five days – Faf du Plessis

While CSA is backing the four-day Test, the South African captain Faf du Plessis is in the different line. Faf du Plessis has claimed that still some Tests are failing to produce result even at the end of the fifth day. So, the four-day Test match has no chance to produce the result in these matches.

Faf said, “I suppose you’ve got to ask CSA what their opinion is. My opinion is that I am a fan of Test cricket going five days. I understand that a lot of money is being burnt on five-day cricket because so many Test matches are not going five days. People will sit 50-50 on it. My personal opinion is that I am still a purist of the game because I have been part of some great draws that went five days. There would definitely not have been a result in four days on this surface.”

During 2017 Boxing Day, South Africa played the four-day Test match against Zimbabwe at Port Elizabeth where AB de Villiers was the Proteas captain after the captain Faf du Plessis was ruled out due to fitness issue. It was also the first day/night Test in South Africa while the Proteas side was playing their second day/night pink-ball Test and Zimbabwe were playing their maiden day/night pink-ball Test. The hosts South Africa won that Test match by an innings and 120 runs.

Keegan Petersen Replaces Injured Aiden Markram For Second Test

South Africa have named Keegan Petersen to replace injured Aiden Markram for the second Test match against England. Markram was ruled out of the rest of the series after he broke his finger in the first Test match at Centurion. while fielding The opening batsman will undergo surgery later this week, a Cricket South Africa release said.

Meanwhile, Keegan Petersen has been in sublime form in the recent past and thus he has received his maiden Test call-up. The uncapped batsman scored a fine knock of 111 for South Africa A in a tour match at Benoni against England last week. Furthermore, he forged 155 for Northern Cape against Western Province in Kimberley last month in a second-tier first-class game.

Petersen will like to grab his chance.

However, Petersen call-up is a surprising one as South Africa already has the third opener in their squad – Pieter Malan. Thus, it would be interesting to note who will get the opportunity to replace Aiden Markram in the playing XI.

Meanwhile, it is also anticipated Rassie Van der Dussen who scored a good knock of 51 runs in the second dig might be given the chance to open the innings. The right-hander had replaced injured Temba Bavuma in the first Test. Consequently, if Bavuma is fit to play the second Test match, van der Dussen can be pushed up the batting order.

Keegan Petersen has scored 15 centuries in his 149 first-class innings, which have brought him 5,490 runs at an average of 40.66. Thus, he would like to grab his chance with both hands if he gets the opportunity in the second Test match.

Meanwhile, England needs 129 runs to win whereas South Africa needs another four wickets to win the first Test. The second Test match will take place at Cape Town from Friday.

Vernon Philander Confirms Kolpak Deal With Somerset

South Africa’s veteran pacer Vernon Philander is all set to join Somerset on a Kolpak deal for the 2020 County season. Philander had recently announced his international retirement and the ongoing series against England is the last of his career. Philander had also represented Somerset in the past and he had a good time at the club.

Consequently, the South African opening pacer is looking forward to having a good County season with Somerset. Philander has been right on the money with his bowling and he would like to deliver the goods for the club. The right-arm pacer was the pick of the South African bowlers as he scalped four wickets for 16 runs in the first innings against England as the visitors were dismissed for 181.

Philander has been South Africa’s finest.

“I know that they won the 50-over cup last year and came close in the Championship and hopefully I’ll be able to help them to another successful year in 2020. Right now, I am 100% focused on the series against England and then my focus will turn to my next chapter.”

The Proteas pacer has had a good time with Somerset in the past as he had snared 23 wickets at an impressive average of 23.12 in the 2012 season. Philander played five matches as an overseas player in 2012. Somerset Director for Cricket Andy Hurry is thrilled to have Vernon Philander on board.

Speaking on Philander’s acquisition, Hurry said: “Vernon is undoubtedly a genuine world-class performer and we are delighted to have agreed to terms with such a talented player.

“When the possibility of signing him presented itself and considering the challenges that we feel lie ahead of us with regards to achieving our aspirations, we felt that it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“To put it simply, he is one of the very best bowlers in the game and he would add quality to any team in the world. His experience and knowledge of the game will also be of huge benefit to our bowling group, especially the young players looking to break into the First XI.

“The addition of Vernon to our bowling unit will enable us to continue to manage the workloads of all of our quality seamers through the demands of a full and demanding season even more effectively.

Vernon Philander has had an impressive career as he has taken 220 wickets in 61 Test matches at a fine average of 21.92. The medium-pacer who has the skills to move the ball both ways has made himself available for Somerset in all the formats.

Faf Du Plessis In Conversation With AB de Villiers For Return In International Cricket

South African team is currently under the transition period. The experienced players AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla have retired from the team. Thus, the Proteas team have admitted the young and talented players led by Faf du Plessis. But the team’s performances have not been top-notch this year. With T20 World Cup is lined up, du Plessis and the South African coach are planning to bring back their retired player AB de Villiers.

De Villiers retired from all form of international cricket in May 2018 but has been regular in franchise league matches. He last played his home league Mzansi Super League 2019 where his team Tshwane Spartans reached the final but could not win the game. Now, he will head to play the Big Bash League. The 35-year old has played 304 T20s and his consistency remains unchanged and unmatched.

AB de Villiers,

His experience in the white-ball format will surely help the South Africa National cricket team. Therefore, newly appointed Head Coach Mark Boucher has said that he will talk to de Villers to make a U-turn from his retirement.

Faf du Plessis has already started his conversation with AB de Villiers

Reacting to the Boucher’s statement, the Proteas skipper cleared that there has been a conversation from two to three months to bring back the South Africa star. He believes De Villiers needs to play international matches to make himself available for T20 World Cup.

“Those conversations have been happening two or three months ago,” said Du Plessis.

“It’s not a lot of time away from home. Obviously with a full campaign you have to spend a lot of time on the road. The T20 World Cup is not too far away and there isn’t a long list of T20 internationals over the season. Those conversations have taken place and they will take place before the next T20 international series starts.” Du Plessis.
