Pique made his Spain debut during the 2-0 win over England on 6 February 2009. He made his tournament debut for Spain at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, starting in four of the team’s five matches. Spain finished the competition in third place. The Barcelona star started in all the seven games, as Spain won their first-ever FIFA World Cup by beating the Netherlands 1–0 in the final. Pique’s partnership with Puyol saw Spain concede only twice and keep four consecutive clean sheets in the knockout stage.

In 2012, Pique represented Spain to defend their UEFA Euro Cup title. Pique played every minute of Spain’s campaign while partnering Sergio Ramos in the centre of defence. He was one of three Spanish defenders included in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament, as the winners conceded only one goal in six matches. He is likely to exit the club this year and his selection in the next season will be a matter of huge concern for the entire FC Barcelona board.

Bundesliga 2019-20: Luis Enrique States Football Without Fans Was A Sad Sight To Watch

Spain’s national football coach, Luis Enrique has expressed his grief over football being held in empty stadiums behind closed doors. Luis Enrique termed it a sad sight to watch and said that he is not happy with the state of football that is being played and will be played in the coming times behind closed doors.

Notably, Bundesliga became the first major league across Europe’s top five leagues to resume their campaign after the onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic for two months. Bundesliga resumed with using draconian hygiene guidelines, regular testing of players and insisting on games in near-empty stadiums. Hugging, embracing and handshakes were also banned.

However, Luis Enrique didn’t seem too pleased with the sight of watching football in empty stadiums and has now expressed his sadness over the same.

Luis Enrique Unhappy With Football Being Held Without Fans

“(Playing without fans) is sadder than dancing with your own sister. It’s not attractive,” Luis Enrique told the Colgados del aro (Hanging from the hoop) basketball show on Wednesday.

“I watched the German football and it’s a sad sight. You hear the voices, you even hear the insults… you lose the intimacy of the better moments,” Enrique added.

“But you also have to understand it’s a business that generates lots of money, and even if the spectacle is a long way from that when there’s fans it can help in dealing with the confinement,” Luis Enrique further said.

“Watching football again or any other sport, as a fan it’s interesting,” he added.

Empty stadiums, distant celebrations, masked substitutes, and the sound of the ball piercing the net, that’s how European football marked its return when Bundesliga continued their campaign after a break of almost two months because of the coronavirus outbreak globally.

Spain trains without Pique ahead of friendlies

Madrid, March 21: The Spain national football team on Tuesday practised at its second-to-last training camp before the 2018 World Cup without Gerard Pique, who missed the first session in which Rodrigo Hernandez, Marcos Alonso and Dani Parejo took part, under coach Julen Lopetegui’s helm.

Barcelona defender Pique was out sick with a fever for the training at Las Rozas sports city near Madrid, where the Spain team — world champions in 2010 — prepared for their friendly matches against Germany on Friday and Argentina next Tuesday, reports Efe.

Coach Lopetegui had the remaining 23 of his 24 players on the field.

The training also saw the return of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa after a period of inactivity due to problems with his former team Chelsea, having not played with Spain since the June 12 World Cup qualifier against Macedonia.

Brazilian Striker Willian Jose Seeking Spain Switch

Madrid, Nov 15 (IANS) Real Sociedad’s Brazilian striker Willian Jose has revealed that he is seeking Spanish citizenship in a bid to switch his national allegiance ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The 25-year-old, who has scored eight goals in 15 matches so far this season, said his decision was prompted by a lack of opportunities for five-time world champions Brazil, reports Xinhua news agency.

“Brazil always calls up the same players,” Jose told reporters on Tuesday.

“Here in Spain, I think it would be easier to be selected than it is for Brazil because you are given chances.

“I would be very happy (with the possibility). I really like the Brazil national team but I also like the Spain team and I think I have more chances here. I hope I can get my (Spanish) passport and be available.”

Jose, who began his career at Barueri in Sao Paulo state, has represented Brazil at the under-20 level but never in a senior competition.

Among other Brazilians to have switched nationality in recent years are Spain’s Diego Costa and Marcos Senna, and Portugal’s Deco and Pepe.

Zurich, Oct 16 (IANS) The Indian football team rose two spots to 105th position in the FIFA rankings released on Monday. Peru entered the top 10 spot for the first time while Spain climbed three places to enter the segment.

India produced a dominating performance to thump Macau 4-1 in their fourth qualification match for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.

The victory ensured India a place in the Asian Cup 2019.

Peru, who qualified for an Intercontinental Play-off against New Zealand, were joined in the ranking’s upper echelons by Spain, who climbed from 11th to eighth on the back of an impressive conclusion to their unbeaten qualifying campaign.

Amongst the European nations, Germany hold the top spot, while France (7), England (12), Denmark (19), Scotland (29) and Austria (39) made significant moves climbing the ranking.

The Austrians are one of the four new entries to the top 50, where they are joined by Czech Republic (46), Morocco (48) and World Cup qualifying sensation Panama (49).

Spain Line Up Portugal, Russia Friendlies To Start World Cup Preparations

Madrid, Oct 12 (IANS) Spain will play friendly games against Portugal and Russia in the next international break as they start their preparations for the 2018 football World Cup in Russia.

Sports paper Diario AS confirmed on Wednesday that the Spanish will take on Portugal in Atletico Madrid’s recently opened Wanda Metropolitan Stadium on November 10, with a following trip to take on Russia in Saint Petersburg, reports Xinhua news agency.

The game against Portugal will see the two footballing neighbours go head-to-head and give fans a chance to see Cristiano Ronaldo play against a Spain side containing Real Madrid teammates such as Marco Asensio, Isco, Nacho Fernandez and Sergio Ramos.

Meanwhile the trip to Russia will be the first time Spain have played away to that nation in their current form, with the last time the Spanish faced the Russians away, being in 1971 when it formed part of the USSR.

The Spanish team confirmed their qualification for the 2018 World Cup on October 6 with a 3-0 win over Albania and ended their campaign with a 1-0 win in Israel on Monday night topping the Group G with nine wins and a draw from 10 matches.

Spain Qualifies For FIFA 2018 World Cup

Madrid, Oct 7 (IANS) Spain defeated Albania 3-0 to assure themselves a berth in the 2018 World Cup and consign Italy to second place in Group G, while the battle for the top spots in Groups D and I will come down to the 10th and final qualifying round.

With Spain, Belgium, England, Germany and hosts Russia already qualified, nine European slots remain to be filled, reports Efe.

La Roja cruised to victory over visiting Albania, with three first-half goals from Rodrigo Moreno, Isco Alarcon and Thiago Alcantara.

But the win would not have been sufficient to guarantee first place in Group G if not for Italy’s flat performance against Macedonia.

The Azzurri took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Giorgio Chiellini, but they conceded a marker to Macedonia’s Aleksandar Trajkovski in the final 15 minutes and were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw that leaves them at 20 points, five behind Spain.

Italy have a lock on the second spot in the group and look likely to be among the eight second-place finishers who will face each other in playoffs for a chance to go to Russia.

In Group I, Iceland posted an impressive 3-0 away victory against Turkey, getting goals from Johan Gudmundsson, Birkir Bjarnason and Kari Arnason to climb to 19 points, two more than both Croatia and Ukraine.

The Nordic side can clinch the first place with a victory next week over winless Kosovo, who fell 0-2 to Ukraine on Friday.

Facing Finland at home, Croatia could manage only a draw.

After a scoreless first half, Mario Mandzukic put the hosts up 1-0 in the 57th minute, but Pyri Soiri equalised for the Finns in the final minute of regulation.

Assuming that Iceland beat Albania, Monday’s clash between Ukraine and Croatia will determine second place in the group.

Serbia blew a chance on Friday to secure the top spot in Group D, losing 2-3 to Austria on a goal in the 89th minute by Louis Schaub.

With 18 points, the Serbs are just a point ahead of Wales — who beat Georgia 1-0 on Friday — and two up on Ireland, 2-0 winners over Moldavia.

A victory against Georgia on Monday would guarantee Serbia a ticket to Russia regardless of what happens in the match between Wales and Ireland.

But a Serbian defeat would open the door for either of the Celtic sides to snatch the Group D crown.

Pique In The Spotlight As Spain Look To Clinch World Cup Berth

Madrid, Oct 5 (IANS) Spain chief coach Julen Lopetegui will have to make changes in his side as they prepare for a game which will seal their ticket to the 2018 football World Cup in Russia should they win.

Spain play Albania in Alicante on Friday night and with a three-point lead over Italy, as well as a vastly superior goal difference, victory will be enough for the Spanish, reports Xinhua news agency.

The run into the game has been marked by the controversy over Barcelona defender Gerard Pique’s views over the recent Catalan independence referendum and the insults he received while training in Madrid. Although Pique explained his opinions in an eloquent press conference on Wednesday, he is still likely to be the focus of attention (and probably insults) in Alicante.

Key players Dani Carvajal and Sergio Busquets will be missing for the game; Carvajal has a chest infection, while Busquets is suspended. Asier Illaramendi will probably step in to replace Busquets in central midfield, while young defender Alvaro Odriozola could make his debut on the right.

If Odriozola doesn’t start then the experienced Cesar Azpilicueta will play at right back.

Alvaro Morata and Andres Iniesta will also miss the game through injury and Lopetegui will probably compensate for their absence by starting with Real Madrid’s Marcos Asensio playing as a false number ‘9’ and Pedro Rodriguez in a wide role to add pace.

Pedro has been in good form for Chelsea and Lopetegui is known to have confidence in him.

Spain won 2-0 over Albania earlier in the campaign but needed two second-half goals to break down a dogged rival and it could be they who will have to be patient again on Friday, but the prize of a ticket to Russia should be worth the wait.
