Sunrisers Hyderabad represents the city of Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the Sun TV channel Network and was founded in 2012 after the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers were terminated due to prolonged financial issues.
They debuted in 2013 and made an instant impact by qualifying for the playoffs. They had retained 20 players from the Deccan Chargers squad in addition to buying Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy, Sudeep Tyagi, Nathan McCullum, Quinton de Kock and Clint McKay
Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara led the team in its inaugural season, captaining it for 9 Matches before Cameron White captained the team for the remaining 7 matches and the Eliminator match in the Playoffs.
SRH made it to the playoffs after winning 10 of 16 games. Their journey came to an end with a defeat to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator.
The promising start in 2014 was followed by a dismal season in 2014. The Sunrisers retained only two players – Shikhar Dhawan and Darren Sammy – in an attempt to overhaul the squad. Dhawan was handed the captaincy while Sammy was named his deputy. However, the move did not yield good results as the team finished a lowly sixth in the 8-team tournament.
Dhawan led SRH for the first 10 Matches while Sammy led the team for remaining 4 Matches in the League. But the fortunes of the team did not change as they managed to win only 6 of the 14 games and failed to reach the Play-offs.
In 2015, David Warner was appointed the captain but SRH team performance did not improve much. Under Warner’s captaincy, they again finished 6th with 7 wins and 7 losses and failed to reach the Play-offs.
Change in fortunes:
After two dismal seasons, the franchise bounced back in style in 2016. With skipper Warner leading from the front, they went on to defy all the odds and won their maiden IPL title. They finished the league stage at third position with 8 wins from 14 games. In the Eliminator, they defeated two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders before getting the better of table-toppers Gujarat Lions in the second Qualifier to make it to the final. In the title-decider, they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore to lift the coveted title.
In 2017, they made it to the playoffs again with Warner leading from the front once again. The left-handed batsman finished the season as the top-scorer, helping his side finish third in the table with 8 wins. Their journey ended with a defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator.
The Sunrisers play their home games at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium which is owned by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and has a seating capacity of 65,000.
In 2015, they also played their home games at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.

Sunrisers Hyderabad entered this year’s auction with a purse of RS 59 crores and spent Rs 58.35 crore on 23 players to build a solid squad. The 2016 Indian Premier League champions had retained their skipper David Warner and pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar ahead of the auction.
Two-times IPL winner Manish Pandey was their costliest purchase – they secured him for a whopping Rs 11 crore. In addition, they used the Right To Match card to retain Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and the all-rounder Deepak Hooda. They also bought back New Zealand star Kane Williamson to add more solidarity to their already strong batting lineup. With the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Basil Thampi, Siddharth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma and Rashid Khan also in the team, the bowling lineup also looks formidable.
