Tottenham beat Watford 2-0 to tighten grip on 4th in EPL

London, May 1: Tottenham Hotspur registered a 2-0 victory over Watford to move a step closer to sealing a top four spot in the English Premier League (EPL) football season.

With 71 points from 35 matches, Tottenham hold the final Champions League berth from the EPL by a margin of five points over fifth-place Chelsea. Both clubs have three matches left to play after Tottenham’s win here on Monday, reports Efe.

Watford, who sit in 13th place, looked the better side during the first half at the Wembley Stadium, but found themselves thwarted by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

At the other end of the pitch, Watford keeper Orestis Karnezis bobbled what should have been an easy stop and left the ball for Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, who set up Dele Alli for the goal to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 16th minute.

The visitors continued to create chances, forcing Lloris to be sharp to stop efforts by Abdoulaye Doucoure and Richarlison, who nearly equalized for Watford in the 44th minute.

Tottenham were much improved after the break and Harry Kane made it 2-0 for the home side with a goal in the 48th minute.

“It’s a massive win. It keeps us in a very good position in the top four, fantastic. I’m happy,” the club’s website Tottenham quoted head coach Mauricio Pochettino as saying.

“Maybe it wasn’t a great performance but the most important thing was to be competitive and win the three points.”

For Watford, the result means they will have to wait at least another week to get the three points they need to be sure of spending another season in the EPL.

“We had a good performance tonight and created many chances but didn’t score. I cannot by happy with the result but I am happy with the performance,” Watford head coach Javi Garia was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

Chelsea’s slump deepens with loss to Watford

Watford (England), Feb 6: Reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions Chelsea have lost 1-4 to Watford, their second straight EPL defeat and the hosts’ first triumph of 2018.

The decision by new Watford coach Javi Gracia to advance his lines created enormous problems for Chelsea here on Monday evening, reports Efe news agency.

Chelsea’s stumbles in their own end created openings for Richarlison and Gerard Deulofeu, playing for Watford on loan from Barcelona, and the pressure pushed Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayokoto to commit fouls that saw him sent off in the 30th minute for a second yellow card.

With his side down to 10 men, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois came out against an onrushing Deulofeu and drew a foul. Troy Deeney stepped to the line and made it 1-0 for the hosts in the 42nd minute.

Though Chelsea made adjustments, it took them until the 82nd to pull level, thanks to an outstanding individual effort by Eden Hazard.

And instead of signalling a Chelsea comeback, the equaliser turned out to be the prelude to a Watford onslaught that produced three goals in less than 10 minutes.

Daryl Janmaat struck first, in the 84th minute, followed in the 88th by Deulofeu, while Roberto Pereyra delivered the final blow in stoppage time.

Chelsea, with 50 points from 26 matches, are in third place, trailing Liverpool by a point. Watford climb to 30 points and sit 11th on the EPL table.

Watford Agree Deal For Brazil U-20 Forward

English Premier League side Watford have agreed to sign Brazil under-20 forward Richarlison from Rio de Janeiro outfit Fluminense.

Richarlison had also been linked with Premier League champions Chelsea and Dutch club Ajax, reports Xinhua news agency.  Mohammad Amir Reveals About Brotherly Bond With Virat Kohli

“(We) thank Richarlison for his dedication and commitment during his 70 games and 19 goals for the club and wish him success in the next stage of his career,” Fluminense said in a statement.

Watford are said to be awaiting the approval of a work permit for the 20-year-old before confirming the transfer, which reportedly cost the Hornets around $11 million.  Watch: Ravindra Jadeja Sends Back Angelo Mathews
