At WrestleMania 39, Drew McIntyre challenged Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship. It was a triple threat match that also involved the Celtic Warrior Sheamus. The match was ultimately won by the Ring General where he managed to pin McIntyre. Gunther’s iconic reign continued.

After this defeat, McIntyre remained out of action for nearly two months and there were a lot of speculations about his absence. Rumors suggested that McIntyre was not happy with the way WWE treated him in the recent time and he wanted to part ways with the promotion.  Most of the fans believed in this theory.

But there were speculations of his potential return as well. Most of the fans were expecting to see him returning for the World Heavyweight Championship. There were even speculations that he would turn heel in the process. The fans were getting really excited by imagining him as a heel World Champion, and it would definitely have been something quite exciting to see.

But that did not happen. Instead, he returned to challenge for the WWE Intercontinental championship once again. He is playing the same character that he had been playing ever since. McIntyre recently on the Cheap Heat where he is finally revealed what he was doing during this absence. Here is what he had to say;

Drew McIntyre Returned At Money In The Bank

“It was a unique situation where what was going on, I had to get a couple of things fixed but it didn’t require physical therapy like a lot of things I’ve had to deal with in the past,” McIntyre said. “So I was able to enjoy my time and spend time with the family and the cats and get some projects taken care of outside of the ring. Sometimes stepping and getting a view outside the bubble is something that is very helpful for where you want to go as a person and with your career.”

“I’ve learned the hard way when I was younger getting fired [from WWE] and I had to step outside the bubble and get perspective again. And this opportunity allowed me to see things a little clearer and allowed people to talk a lot on the internet,” said the former two times WWE Champion.

Drew McIntyre is scheduled to challenge Gunther for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam. There are still rumours that McIntyre would turn heel soon to feud for the World Heavyweight Championship. It is reported that he did not extend his contract yet and he would not get any main event push before he resigns his contract.
