The reigning AEW World Champion Adam Page could be on the verge of becoming a villain for the first time in his career on the promotion. This makes sense as he is going up against one of the most popular top babyface superstars of this generation.
In this week’s episode of Dynamite, Adam Page delivered a heel promo by stating that fans won’t be treated to be a “masturbatory Bret Hart tribute” when he defends his championship against CM Punk at Double or Nothing 2022 PPV, later this month.
“At Double or Nothing, there’s not going to be a handshake,” Adam Page noted. “There’s not going to be a masturbatory Bret Hart tribute match. I am going to destroy CM Punk.”

The champion also went ahead to call out a fan in the audience wearing a CM Punk shirt that he would be running to the merchandise stand for a refund once Double or Nothing 2022 gets over.
Adam Page not cool with CM Punk’s tribute to Bret Hart
CM Punk’s AEW debut match against Darby Allin was a tribute match to Bret Hart’s match against The 1-2-3 Kid from a 1994 episode of RAW. His Dog Collar Match against MJF at AEW Revolution brought out the exact finish to that of the Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper match at WrestleMania 8. Then Punk also paid tribute to The Hitman by executing a small package pinfall win over Wardlow, earlier this year. This was a reincarnation of the Bret Hart vs. Diesel match from the 1995 Survivor Series.
Now you know why Adam Page was taking shots at his challenger by taking the name of the legendary Bret Hart. Eventually, Hart was the one who debuted the AEW World Title and in the inaugural title match, Page competed against Chris Jericho, three years ago.

Punk’s match against Dustin Rhodes was also a tribute to a Bret Hart vs. Goldust match from 1997. The finish of the match was a Hart reference where Punk rolled up Rhodes for the win. It was similar to how the British Bulldog defeated The Hitman for the Intercontinental Championship in the main event of SummerSlam 1992. (info courtesy Wrestling INC)
Adam Page vs. CM Punk has been announced for the upcoming Double or Nothing pay-per-view alongside Thunder Rosa (c) vs. Serena Deeb for AEW Women’s World Championship. Plus, the Men’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament Final and the Women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament Final will also go down at the PPV event.
