Since they used to belong to totally different wrestling territories, people could’ve barely expected to see AJ Styles and John Cena competing against each other. Also with different fighting styles, no one expected those matches from the 2016-2017 season to be the match of the year contenders but they eventually were.
Though those matches took place a long ago, AJ Styles recently admitted that his rivalry with John Cena was a game-changer for his WWE career that only started. During an interview on WWE’s The Bump on YouTube, the panel and the former Intercontinental Champion took a stroll down memory lane, by revisiting the trifecta of matches with Cena, Money in the Bank (2016), SummerSlam (2016), and Royal Rumble (2017).
AJ Styles Speaks On Sharing Great Chemistry With WWE Legend John Cena
AJ Styles was heard praising the overall chemistry of them and how well they got along together coming from two different planets. Cena was the franchise of the WWE for years where AJ was the most talented wrestler of the independent circuit. But they produced pure magic inside the ring,
“I was super excited about it. I knew it was going to be something special, no doubt about it,” Styles exclaimed! “Him and I had this chemistry and I’ve said this over and over again. We are two totally different performers, but him and I gelled so well together. I knew that this was going to be a fun match. I was smiling the whole time because I knew this was going to be great.”

AJ Styles specifically mentioned the Royal Rumble 2017 match during the conversation. In this match, they’ve never met outside the ring. The best technical wrestler of this generation said he’s proud of some matches and this one was one of those.
“As I said, the chemistry that we had was unbelievable,” he reiterated. “What you don’t know about that match at the Royal Rumble was that we never went outside of the ring; that’s different than most matches. There are a lot of matches that I’m proud of, and this is one of them.”
While speaking of bitter rivals in the WWE, AJ Styles also named Samoa Joe who had quite a personal feud back in 2018 for the WWE Championship. Joe made it personal by visiting Styles’ house and trying to threatening his family members. Looking back at their match from SummerSlam in 2018, Styles said, he never thought that he and Joe would cross paths in the WWE, after so many years they spent in TNA.
“Where we came from to where we are now it’s pretty unbelievable the way our careers paralleled together,” he noted. “Who would have thought that we would be there in WWE at a pay-per-view years later. It’s unbelievable – it really is.” (Quotes courtesy wrestlingINC.com)
