Former WWE United States Champion Baron Corbin is involved in a storyline right now which shows him losing all his wealth after losing his King of the Ring crown to Shinsuke Nakamura. This is a different kind of storyline which is not very common in professional wrestling.
This particular storyline began when Shinsuke Nakamura challenged Baron Corbin for his the King of the Ring crown. He lost his crown to Nakamura and after that, he faced massive losses and he is being forced to lose all his properties slowly. Corbin is playing his character perfectly and he has been praised by the fans and critics for his amazing acting skills recently.
Baron Corbin Poverty Storyline – Analysis
But is this storyline any good? What kind of impact does this storyline leave among the fans? Is it really fun to watch?
Corbin is facing massive losses and being forced to lose all his property, still, he is being portrayed as a bad guy. And Nakamura, who is the good guy is having fun with this critical condition of the former WWE United States champion. Every week he keeps mocking him and the car that he was forced to lose which we saw last week, is now being used by Nakamura.
In short, the man who is losing everything is the bad guy, and the man who is making fun of his bad situation is the good guy. What kind of example WWE is trying to set by this storyline? This is nothing but an indirect promotion of bullying.
Are we supposed to make fun of the person who is surrounded by poverty? Is this the right call? WWE is currently doing this exactly. The storyline is not bad though, in fact, it is something unique. But the execution is not good, it is setting a bad example.
This is not the first time WWE is presenting such a storyline with a bad message. The storyline between Lita, Kane, and Edge from 2005 was vastly criticized as well. In this storyline, we are supposed to cheer for a rapist and WWE expected us to boo the victim.
This storyline however can still be saved. They just need to turn Baron Corbin babyface, and since Nakamura is a lovable babyface right now, he would be helping him in this bad situation. This would give a good message definitely. Or if Nakamura turns heel and Corbin turns face can still be good. Moreover, this storyline has to change, else it is setting a terrible example.
