Gimmick and professional wrestling had a big connection between each other. Give me a very important thing of professional wrestling in the past. But nowadays giving are not much seen in any professional wrestling promotion. Wrestlers are mostly seen in straight forward characters, mostly portraying their real life role.

Booker T Gives His Opinion On If Gimmicks Are Backdated

Since the last decade we do not see enough gimmicks in professional wrestling. There was a time when gimmicks were very important things in professional wrestling. Wrestlers like The Undertaker and Kane became mostly famous because of their amazing gimmicks. But these type of gimmicks are very difficult to see nowadays. Even the independent promotions do not propose such ideas. Even though there are a few like “The Demon” Finn Balor.

But it is very difficult these days where fans could experience fiction like gimmicks. Like the gimmick of Papa Shango, it might have been a failure back then, such gimmicks are nearly impossible to see now a days. Wrestlers these days like to perform more realistic characters and the professional wrestling promotion do not want them to play fiction gimmicks either.

Booker T who is the former five times WCW World Heavyweight champion recently during a episode of the Hall of Fame Podcast gave opinion if gimmicks are a thing of the past. He said;

“I was talking about something last week, and I said gimmicks are pretty much the thing of the past. But I always say also, there’s a place for something like that on the show, but there can only be one. Everybody cannot be a gimmick as far as the overall show.

“It’s not gonna work if every wrestler….it would look like cartoon or circus. But if you’ve got that one guy like The Undertaker – you just can’t have the whole roster looking like a gimmick. The same thing with the performance.

“You just can’t play haha all the time and get in the ring and expect the fans to take you serious if you don’t switch gears. You can do haha, but when you get in the ring, haha goes out the window. I say that because it’s professional wrestling. The most athletic guy may not be the most over guy because this is entertainment.”
