Extreme Rules 2022 is shaping up to be a gimmick-based event by all means after a gap of multiple years. Although this PPV has almost regularly featured on the WWE calendar since 2009, this is the first time after a long gap that WWE is actually booking matches under different stipulations to live up to the name of the event, unlike the previous years where only the main event was placed in Extreme Rules capacity.
Speaking of main events, the potential headliner match for Extreme Rules 2022 has been made official during this week’s Smackdown. Drew McIntyre will face Karrion Kross in a Strap Match during the upcoming pay-per-view. Since Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns won’t attend the show, this match should serve as the main event of the evening.
Roman Reigns Vs. AJ Styles Announced By WWE For The First Time Since 2016
As seen on Smackdown, McIntyre came to the ring with a leather strap wrapped around his fist to cut a promo about the recent attacks on himself by Karrion Kross on him from behind. It was during this promo that McIntyre confirmed that he will take on Kross in a Strap Match at Extreme Rules 2022. The Strap Match rule won’t allow Kross to escape from him under any circumstances.
Scarlett came down the ramp, allowing her husband Kross to pounce on McIntyre from behind but McIntyre fought him off with the strap. Scarlett then entered the ring and low-blowed McIntyre, allowing him to get the upper hand. Kross then passed out McIntyre with the Kross Jacket submission.
After Kross stood tall, WWE officially announced Kross vs. McIntyre in a Strap Match for Extreme Rules 2022. This is the fourth match to be added to the PLE and the third overall gimmick set for the night. The last time a Strap Match went down on WWE TV was in an episode of Raw back in 2021 between Elias and Jaxson Ryker.
