Extreme Rules 2022 is going to be the next WWE Network Specials for the fans that will be happening within three weeks from now. While the storylines for the event are in progress on WWE programming, only one match has been announced. Smackdown Women’s Champion Liv Morgan will defend her title in a rematch against Ronda Rousey in the only confirmed match.
Another top match from the Raw roster is in the making for Extreme Rules 2022 where Matt Riddle will get his desired rematch against Seth Freakin’ Rollins. In an update regarding this match, it appears that this bout will be contested under an interesting stipulation. It will be a Fight Pit match set for the premium live event on October 8.
Extreme Rules 2022: WWE Indicates Possible Main Event Match On Smackdown
The concept of a Fight Pit calls for the competitors to fight inside a ring without ropes and turnbuckles. Instead, the ring canvas is surrounded by steel which is much different from the traditional pro wrestling steel cage structure. There are also no doors and the cage will be surrounded by raised platforms. The only way to win this type of match is via submission or TKO.
Given the match type, Riddle should have the upper hand at Extreme Rules 2022. He had laid out the challenge for a rematch and it should be him to choose the stipulation, rightfully. The assumption is the WWE will continue the matchup with the stipulation, next week.
Riddle wanted Fight Pit Match at WWE Extreme Rules 2022
For several weeks ahead of Extreme Rules 2022, Rollins had rejected Riddle’s urge for a rematch. This comes after Rollins picked up a win over The Original Bro at Clash at the Castle. Riddle wasn’t happy with the outcome and hence took matters into his own hands on the September 19 episode of Raw, costing Rollins in his title match against United States Champion Bobby Lashley.
After some time, Rollins would return the favor by helping The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest as they pinned Riddle and Rey Mysterio in a tag team bout.
After costing each other matches, Riddle and Rollins would get involved in a fight in the backstage area, until they were separated by WWE officials. After this, Rollins agreed to a rematch where Riddle made it clear he wanted to wrestle his rival inside the Fight Pit. WWE announcers then subsequently confirmed the stipulation match for Extreme Rules 2022.
This will be only the third Fight Pit match to have taken place in WWE history. The previous two bouts took place on the May 27, 2020, episode of NXT, following Riddle vs. Timothy Thatcher on NXT, and Tommaso Ciampa vs. Thatcher on the January 20, 2021 episode of NXT. It was Thatcher who got the win on both occasions, defeating Riddle by TKO and Ciampa by submission. We’ll have to wait until Extreme Rules 2022 to get the next winner of this kind of match.
