On the 2020 Draft edition of SmackDown, The New Day members Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods returned to in-ring action. They got an impromptu rematch against Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. They eventually ended up pinning them to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. While this was supposed to be a celebration for them, a piece of bad news was soon waiting for them.

Stephanie McMahon announced that Kingston and Woods were drafted to RAW, while Big E was retained by SmackDown. Thus, for the first time in seven years, The New Day won’t be performing as a team, anymore. Thus appeared to be quite an emotional ride for the trio, as expressed by them on social media handles.

It was also a creative decision that the WWE Universe won’t forget about for a long time to follow. The only positive thing is that it might solidify Big E as a singles competitor.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed WWE splitting up The New Day. The idea was nurtured for a long time and finally, WWE decided to pull the plug on it. He said that it’s likely that Big E will benefit from the move as the company wants to give him the spotlight where he can prove to be a future champion, all by himself,

“I think that their mentality is that they want to give Big E a big singles push and in their mind if he’s part of the New Day then people will want him together as a team. It doesn’t have to be that way, I don’t think breaking up the New Day was the right thing to do, but I’m sure if Big E becomes a big singles star at the end or if they go all the way with him they figure that everyone will be happy with that — and they will be.” (Transcription by Ringside News)

WWE had built a great faction in the form of The New Day, for the past several years who is the longest-reigning tag team champions of all-time. The 2/3 of the group are still together on Raw while Big E will be now doing his own thing on the blue brand. Going by WWE history, there’ll always be some room where they meet together, down the road. Apparently, WWE just wants to make sure that Big E doesn’t have Kingston and Woods by his side, from now onwards.

It was noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the plan isn’t the same for The Usos. Unlike The New Day, WWE is not planning to break up their old rivals. So it’s evident whenever Jimmy Uso is prepared to return he will be joining his brother Jey on SmackDown while remaining separated from his wife Naomi who’s on Raw. His surgically repaired knee is likely to take some more months to heal, as per the reports.
