It was 1997 and the event was WCW Slamboree. Ric Flair teamed up with Roddy Piper and the American Football legend Kevin Greene faced the nWo (Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Syxx) in a six-man tag team match. Ric Flair pinned Scott Hall to ensure victory for his side.
Now comes the shocking part; The Nature Boy was paid even less than the American football player on that event. Ric Flair recently appeared on the Pro Wrestling 4 Life where he revealed this story;
Ric Flair Was Once Paid Even Less Than Kevin Greene?
Here’s the deal. I know you don’t remember this, but the funny thing about this — and these are the things that got major heat with me with Eric [Bischoff]. He paid Kevin Greene, who just passed away but a very close friend of mine, more for that [match at Slamboree 1997] and the TV’s leading into it than he paid me in a year. Okay, that’s heat.
Okay, and then number two, he and Piper — Kevin stayed there [in Charlotte, NC], Piper went home, I go to Asheville [for Nitro] with you guys and all three I take your finishes. Boom-lick in the middle of the ring. Which is fine, but why is it just me? I look back on it now and say, ‘of course I get why it was me, but you know Eric — it was cool when we won in Charlotte, okay.
This is not the first time when an outside celebrity was given more attention than the wrestlers by the company. WWE does this all the time and this is the reason celebrities never lost a match at WrestleMania. This Puerto Rican celebrity Bad Bunny is going to face The Miz and John Morrison with Damien Priest on his side. The result becomes much predictable if the history is revised.
On the other hand, WCW took things a bit too far when it comes to handling celebrities. April 25th, 2000, movie actor David Arquette won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. It is considered to be the biggest reason for WCW’s downfall. A title that was previously held by the likes of Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Vader, Sting, Randy Savage, and more was given to a random actor.
WWE does not do such stupid things though but a lot of wrestling fans hate it when celebrities get matches at WrestleMania and beat regular wrestlers. We hope one day WWE will do what is right.
