Shawn Michaels Reflect On His First WrestleMania Match With The Undertaker

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker from WrestleMania 25 is not only considered as one of the best WrestleMania matches of all time, but also one of the best matches in professional wrestling history.

Two middle-aged gentlemen of age 45 and 46 put up such a performance that will always remain as a collector’s item. The event was very weak, only this match saved the entire event. An over 30-minute match that never felt boring, not even for a single moment.

Fans often criticize WWE for not letting these two individuals main event that year. The officials themselves understood their mistake, and the very next year, they let them main event WrestleMania 26, and once again they proved why they were considered as the bests in the business.

Shawn Michaels talked about this match when he appeared on ESPN’s SportsNation before WrestleMania 37 to hype the event. He said;

“All I know is it’s the one I left that I felt like I could leave it all behind and be OK with it. That’s all I could say. I never felt peace after a match like I did that one, and that’s why I made the decision that I made. It just felt really nice.

It felt like I had done or accomplished whatever the goal was. I had to dream bigger than I had and once you do that, it’s just this world of unknown and when is that last one and when does that happen. Over the years, I’ve seen people struggle with it. That day only gets closer the longer you do it. It’s not like I was looking to find the one to end it on.

It just felt that way, and as I told my wife on the way home, I was like I think I’m OK with that. To this day, she’s still stunned that I walked away when I walked away. It was just a feeling of such peace with what I’d done that I just figured you’re crazy if you tried to mess with that. I knew the next one was the one to end it on, and that was that.”

WrestleMania 26 was the first WrestleMania not to feature a title shot on the main event in 15 years. WWE took inspiration from this incident and featured non-title matches as the main events on WrestleMania for quite a many time. For most of the parts, it worked. But nothing could surpass the glory set by Undertaker and Shawn Michaels.
