He also worked as a single competitor for quite a long time. As a single computer he won the WWE intercontinental championship three times in total and the WWE United States Championship one time. In 2010 he was let go by the way and he started working on the Independent Circuit.
In 2017 he made his return to WWE after working on the Independent Circuit and other professional wrestling promotions. When he made his return to WWE he was already past his 40s so there was not enough hope for him to get pushed as a main event star in WWE. And that did not happen either.
He was receiving a tag team push along with Chad Gable since his return to WWE. Indeed he was a tag team specialist so he played his role quite perfectly. He worked as a tag team wrestler as well as a singles wrestler. In 2020 he teamed up with former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander.

Both of them became a member of the famous WWE stable Hurt Business along with Bobby Lashley and MVP. It was an extremely famous stable but slowly it became an outcast and both of them became jobbers.
The team did not work out pretty well and both of them turned out to be jobbing. Benjamin is a jobber right now and there is no chance of him becoming the WWE champion and even if he faces Brock Lesnar you would be squashed.
Shelton Benjamin who is also a former three times WWE Tag Team Champion recently spoke to Wrestling Inc. where he made his intentions clear that he would like to face the former 9 times WWE world champion Brock Lesnar. He also talked about his desire to become WWE champion in the future. He said;

“I mean, I think me and Brock, and Gable, and Bobby, we are all a testament to that kind of thinking. If you bring in athletes, you’re going to get great talent, great matches, great performances. I kind of have mixed feelings on only focusing on that. Because again, there’s a lot of great talent out there that I think deserves a shot.
“So to say we are going to focus primarily on this product type vs. this I have mixed feelings about that. But it is what it is, just like everything, card subject to change. This could just be a phase, but I also believe that great talent, they’re going to find their way here no matter what. It’s more of a hurdle, not a wall.”
