Professional wrestling legend and retired professional wrestler The Boogeyman who is also a former WWE star recently looked back at being released by WWE during his developmental time period before creating his Eyeconic character.

Martin Wright was introduced to the world of professional wrestling through the Tough Enough competition of WWE back in 2004. He could not survive in the competition for long but soon he made his return to WWE in a completely different gimmick.

The Boogeyman Remembers Being Released By WWE

He became the Boogeyman. It is considered as one of the scariest characters in WWE history. When he first made his debut in this new character, fans and critics often compared this gimmick with the Papa Shango character played by Charles Wright in the early 1990s. But soon the confusion was cleared.

It looked like WWE had big plans for the Boogeyman as he was given pushes over the wrestlers like JBL and Booker T, both of them were former World Champions. But unfortunately the gimmick could not be as successful as everyone expected it could be.

He won only one Championship throughout his professional wrestling career and that is the AWF Tag Team Championship along with Bobby Lashley. In 2019 he announced his retirement from Professional wrestling.

The Boogeyman who is also a former WWE star recently spoke on Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw where he slooked back at being released by WWE during his developmental time period before creating his iconic character. He said;

“That was an intimidating time [being at OVW/WWE developmental]. I mean honestly, I did what I could do, I did the best that I can be but it was walking into a situation of an unfamiliar territory that, I mean, as far as athletically and everything so I was completely humbled and intimidated and I was really hard on myself too. I mean tremendously.

“I wanted to be [where] I wanted to be. So, throughout the course of that developmental contract, I was fired. I was released and I couldn’t believe that, you know, what? I’m doing everything I can. Prior to that, it was a tough situation but I knew kind of what was going on. I felt like what was going on, being the older gentleman in class, I felt like at a certain point of this, I wasn’t getting taught.

“I wanted to bring a twist to the whole ‘Boogeyman’ thing… I remember once, they told me before the show that I was too scary and I’m like, ‘How can Boogeyman be too scary?’ You know what I mean? It’s The Boogeyman, that’s what I’m going for. So anyway, that had to be a certain look so I had to reduce it and this actually is a little bit more kid-friendly I’d say, so to speak [he laughed].”
