In 2003 WWE finally decided to drop the character and at WrestleMania XX, he returned with his previous Dead Man gimmick.

He kept on working for nearly 2 decades after returning under his Dead Man characters and he only played this fan favorite persona only. He did not adapt his American Badass ever after during his reign in WWE. Even the last match he wrestled was as the Dead Man only.
Recently he made his return to WWE during the special episode of Monday Night RAW XXX and for the first time in nearly 20 years, he appeared as the American Badass. It has been confirmed that he would never portray his Dead Man gimmick ever again.

That’s part of me and the storytelling, right? When I lifted the curtain, and when I lifted it back and pulled it back, that’s gone. It’s gone now.”
