Triple H was originally scheduled to win the tournament in 1996 but he was punished due to the infamous MSG incident and his King of the Ring win was postponed for a year. During the time WWE was going through a tough time period and they were desperate to push future stars. Triple H went on to become one of those future stars who carried the promotion in the future. The tournament played a vital role in promoting him as a top star.
