Last saturday at Money in the Bank PLE, WWE came up with some huge surprises including the return of Drew McIntyre who appeared after the Intercontinental Championship match where Gunther defended his title successfully against Matt Riddle. McIntyre nailed Gunther with the Claymore and posed with the Intercontinental title clarifying his intentions.

There are big rumours that WWE might organize a mega match between Gunther and McIntyre where The ring General would put his Championship on the line. McIntyre also challenged for the IC title at WrestleMania 39 along with Sheamus in a triple threat match where Gunther pinned McIntyre to retain the title.

Why Drew McIntyre Challenged For The WWE Intercontinental Championship – Exploring The Possible Reason

McIntyre did not appear in WWE television since and it was also reported by various media outlets that he was not happy with the way he was treated in WWE recently and he would not come back until his expectations are not met. Most of the fans were expecting to see him return for the new World Heavyweight Championship.

But it was quite shocking when he did not make any kind of claim for the new World Heavyweight Championship, rather he chose the Intercontinental Championship. The World Heavyweight championship scenario is pretty weak since its introduction and the inclusion of McIntyre would definitely bring some excitement into the main event scene of Monday Night RAW.

Drew McIntyre Might Challenge Gunther For The IC Title At Summerslam

There are massive rumors that Gunther would break the record of the Honky Tonk Man of the longest IC title rain that was set back in 1987. He is still three months away from Breaking the record. So it is pretty much confirmed that McIntyre is not going to take the title away from Gunther. He is pretty much destined to be defeated.

So did he only return just to face another defeat by the hands of the Ring General? Wasn’t he supposed to return only when he was satisfied with the future booking plans? At this moment we can see only two reasons behind such a strange decision.

The first reason is pretty simple, maybe he only returned to take the Intercontinental Championship away from Gunther and WWE is not breaking the record of The Honky Tonk Man. McIntyre is definitely a worthy opponent for Gunther and dropping the title to the Scottish Warrior would not affect his career much.

We can see another possible reason. According to reports from PWInsider Elite (via Wrestlingnews.co), McIntyre might have returned to WWE but he did not extend his contract yet and it is still expiring on early 2024. Maybe he would not be given any special treatment before he extends his contract. We think once he extends his contract, he would definitely win the World Heavyweight Championship. Again, this is just an assumption.
