WWE has been a factory of producing new superstars and took the best out of them in the bygone years. But there has been a recent drought in the pipeline as of late that is the biggest reason why the programming is going through low TV rating. Perhaps the greatest nurtured talent of them all is John Cena who have been franchise figure for years.
He realizes the fact that WWE has stopped producing the number of gimmick-based superstars those could have helped them. But unfortunately, The Golden Goose of the company is off to Hollywood these days and there’s not much he can do about this. But he sure did opine on the topic in recent times.
John Cena appeared in BookCon to address the issue that WWE is not producing that much superstars who are not from the indie scenes. He also mentioned the reason behind the same by mentioning that there’s no such poster boy present in the current generation,
“For the longest time, if you considered WWE a band, there’s been one front person of the band. I think that dynamic is changing. It is because the audience is too diverse. I think older males are watching it, younger kids are watching it, females are watching it. The audience is so diverse, so with a diverse audience it’s tough to universally please someone.” (courtesy ringsidenews.com)
John Cena is perhaps the last franchise player of the WWE who is the last of his kind. Prior to him, the likes of The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin has been on the same position for a long time to carry the load of the brand. But there has not been a true successor of this role as if the company does not want it to be that way,
“I don’t think there’s a universal figure that will lead the company forward. I think as the company grows, and especially expands globally, you’re gonna have like a ‘Super Friends’ of the WWE. Which is like people who are essentially fighting for an equal share of popularity. I think the band, essentially, will have ten lead singers of every different race, creed, color, sex, ethnicity.”
Now, WWE did put Roman Reigns into the same situation ever since John Cena became a part-time player. He played the role of the franchise for a long time since October 2018. To recover from Leukemia, he had to leave WWE for sometimes. He did make an emphatic comeback but Seth Rollins has captured his place, as of late. We’ll see whether he gets back the lost position in due course.
