WWE doesn’t have Brock Lesnar under their banner, anymore. The previously existing contract had come to an end back at WrestleMania 36 and since then he is up for grabs for any of the promotions. Rumors have hinted that he could be back in time for SummerSlam 2020 but that wasn’t the case. He might not be ready to compete in this pandemic era.

This is definitely not the first time that WWE and Brock Lesnar parted ways. In 2004, it happened for the first time when he left the company that appeared to be a surprising decision as he was on top of the WWE roster. He wanted to go to a different stream while the company didn’t want him to go anywhere else. So they applied contract rules to prohibit him from doing so.

During Something To Wrestle With Podcast, Bruce Prichard admitted that WWE didn’t want Brock Lesnar to go out of his WWE contract in 2004 without agreeing to a 20-month non-compete clause. That is a long timespan which forced the Next Big Thing to stay out of action for almost two years since leaving WWE, back then.

Prichard said that WWE invested both time and money into training Brock Lesnar to become this megastar on television. So from a simple business perspective, the company just didn’t want some else promotion to use this huge star power since after leaving. Keeping her out of TV for a long time would cause that fade away, a bit. Vince McMahon didn’t want him going to another combat sports or pro wrestling company.

“Yeah, because again, we made the investment in training him initially and getting him to the popularity that he was at. Brock was unhappy, wanted to do other things. That’s fine, you can try other things. However, we had made the investment in him in the sports-entertainment category and wanted to protect that so, just strictly business.” (image courtesy POST Wrestling)

Brock Lesnar entered NJPW for a short stint prior to walking into the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. He later made his way back to WWE in 2012 and continued performing until earlier this year. Now his contract has run out once again, but he hasn’t showed up, anywhere else, to date. We’ll have to wait and see if the former WWE Champion pops out on Raw or SmackDown, at some point.
