In 2019 he signed with WWE for the first time in his career. He was given a push to work in the NXT UK which was the newly opened development territory of WWE back then. Soon after joining NXT UK he won the NXT UK Championship and he is still the longest reigning NXT United Kingdom Championship in WWE history.
He worked in the main NXT for a short amount of time where he did not get to win any Championship but he was quite successful and earned a lot of recognition from the fans. Recently after WrestleMania 38 he made his main roster debut along with his teammate Marcel Barthel who is currently going by the name of Ludwig Kaiser.
He is going through a very strong build in the main roster of WWE and he is undefeated as of now. He has been given the chance to rise on Friday Night Smackdown Recently he defeated Ricochet to win his first main roster Championship that is the WWE Intercontinental title. We hope he is going to get a very strong build and WWE will build him as a future main event star.
William Regal who is a former four times WWE European champion recently spoke on his Gentleman Villain odcast where he talked about the current WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther and addressed him as the perfect lion. He said;
“He knows what he is and he sticks to what he does best. He doesn’t expose anything that he doesn’t know. He knows exactly what to do that’s got him to where he got to. He had a long time to figure it out.
“I remember him having a tryout and he hadn’t figured himself out at the time. once he figured it out — WALTER, now Gunther, he is the perfect heavyweight lion. A person that was a huge influence on my wrestling style, and in helping me, was my favorite wrestler to wrestle. I mentioned his name on there before called Terry Rudge. Terry Rudge taught me in my early 20s a lot of things about the way I wrestled and the way he thought — he had ideas about how wrestling should be.”
