As reported earlier by several outlets, Wrestlemania 38 may end up witnessing the in-ring return of Stone Cold Steve Austin. While nothing is confirmed, WWE is hoping to have the legendary wrestler compete at the PLE waiting in April. At least, the company is trying hard to make it happen by using everything in its power. They also had an opponent figured out for him, it appears.
In case The Texas Rattlesnake does return then the plan for him is to square off against the former WWE Universal Champion, Kevin Owens. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select was the first one to break the news that WWE is trying to get Austin back for a match. The source has also mentioned Owens to be the planned opponent for the legend at Wrestlemania 38,
“In an update, we’ve been able to confirm that this was discussed as far back as January, and Kevin Owens is the opponent internally.”

This news was further discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio by Dave Meltzer, who has also implied that Owens vs. Austin is planned for Wrestlemania 38 if Austin has to return. It’s also worth noting that nothing is set in stone, as of this writing and the match isn’t 100% confirmed, for sure. Austin’s feeling about a potential in-ring return is also unknown, at this point.

Stone Cold Steve Austin returning angle already done
On a related note, WWE internally planted seeds about the match after we received a promo from Kevin Owens, who insulted the people of Texas when talking about how he’s glad that he won’t have to wrestle a match at WrestleMania 38. Since he uses the Stone Cold Stunner as his finisher, his promo immediately fueled up rumors on social media about being some sort of ‘Mania angle.
Wrestlemania 38 will be hosted from Austin’s home state of Texas and it’s probably a no-brainer why Owens was taking shots at the Texas residents. Only time will tell whether there will be further brewing on this storyline.
If Austin has to return to the ring at Wrestlemania 38 then he will be seen in action after a gap of almost two decades. He hasn’t wrestled since his loss to The Rock at WrestleMania 19 in 2003, owing to a neck injury. However, he has made several appearances in WWE since then which included physical capacity.
