This is a series of articles where we shall look back into the history of World Wrestling Entertainment and talk about some of the great forgotten superstars of the company. WWE always produced lots of talents, some succeeded with WWE, and some succeeded elsewhere. The company has a long history of evolution since 1952, the year Capitol Wrestling Corporation was founded by Roderick James McMahon and Joseph Raymond Mondt.
We can say that it was first form of WWE. In 1963, McMahon and Mondt formed World Wide Wrestling Federation and Buddy Rogers was awarded the World Wide Wrestling Federation championship. In 1979, the word ‘Wide’ has been removed from WWWF and it became WWF, World Wrestling Federation. The Golden Era of WWF begins in 1980 which continued till 1992 and in 1993 announced the beginning of the new generation era which was followed by the best era of WWE the attitude era in 1997, after the end of attitude era in 2002, Brand Extension era started and continued till 2007, and finally the PG era started in 2008.
In this series of articles we shall look back look back some of the forgotten names from the seventy years history of World Wrestling Entertainment. In this part of this article, we shall discuss about the formerNWA World Heavyweight champion Ron Garvin.
Roger Barnes debuted to professional wrestling in 1962 along with his brother Terry Garvin as a tag team. They were managed by their other brother Jimmy Garvin. They achieved a several numbers of Regional Tag Team titles.
In late 1970, Garvin split up from the tag team with his brother and wrestled in singles competition to make a name for him. He worked for different territorial promotions in Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Later, Garvin went to National Wrestling Alliance where he acclaimed high recognition. He accomplished the NWA Georgia Television championship five times. The most remarkable feud of him in this time was against Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts whom he feuded for the NWA Georgia Television championship.
After working in Georgia for a long duration of time, he went to Jim Corckett Promotions which was another promotion of National Wrestling Alliance. His important feuds in this period were against Tully Blanchard, Black Bart, Ivan Koloff, The Midnight Express, Kruscher Kruschev, Ric Flair, Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotunda, Al Perez, Dusty Rhodes etc. He defeated Ric Flair at Starrcade 1987 to become the NWA World Heavyweight championship which was one of the most prestigious championships of that time.
In 1989, Garvin debuted to World Wrestling Federation as ‘Rugged’ Ronnie Garvin and worked for over a year under the promotion. He feuded with Dino Bravo, Hercules, Rick Martel, Greg Valentine etc.
Garvin joined the Independent Circuit after he left World Wrestling Federation. He is still active as a professional wrestler on the Independent Circuit.
