Seth Rollins won the Universal Championship for the second time by defeating Brock Lesnar at Summerslam 2019. Moving forward, he is likely to defend his title in next month’s PPV event that should be the main event of the show, as well. WWE presents the Clash of Champions pay-per-view event that will air on the WWE Network on September 15th.

Backstage Update On Plans For King Of The Ring Tournament

As per the recent report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE already has a plan set for the next Universal Championship match aka the main event of Clash of Champions. Seth Rollins is the key person here who will be defending his title against Braun Strowman. This comes as a big surprise as this name was nowhere near in the championship picture, even a few weeks ago.

But we have received a prelude of the same when the gigantic figure returned on the show to have a face-off with Seth Rollins. The new Universal Champion came to the Raw after SummerSlam to cut a celebratory promo following his big win at Summerslam. United States Champion AJ Styles interrupted him hinting that he may be next in line for a title match. But that is not the case as per the creative decision.

Meltzer revealed that this main event match for Clash of Champions is pretty mush set unless there’s a sudden mindset change,

“It is Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman in the Charlotte main event. Unless Vince changes his mind, but I don’t think he’s going to.”

Previously, Drew McIntyre was the chosen contender for this PPV main event match set to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. But the veteran wrestling journalist revealed the reason why there has been a switch in the storyline,

“They do everything to make Seth into a babyface and they bring in Braun, who is going to be a super babyface the way that they brought him in and just because he’s been forgotten about for a few weeks.”

“They didn’t have anything for SummerSlam for him. So the people were going to react big to him. They just need some contenders and I guess he’s (Strowman) the guy. You know, there’s nobody else. They could do Drew, but I guess they’re not. Maybe they felt that Drew has been so mired in this thing with Cedric that he’s not quite ready for that spot.”

Meanwhile, WWE has inserted Braun Strowman into a United States title match on next week’s WWE Raw. AJ Styles will defend his title against the monster in a voluntary way that WWE.com has already made official. This makes the ingoing title scenario, pretty interesting heading into Clash of Champions.
