The highly-anticipated WWE Premium Live Events (formerly known as WWE PPV) will be taking place throughout the year. Generally one WWE PPV show is scheduled to take place per month. On some occasions,  the monthly PPV count can increase to two or three.

While WWE maintains its core flagship PPV events with fixed names and months, the names and designated months for other premium live events may vary from year to year. WWE PPV events serve as major highlights on the wrestling calendar, attracting a significant audience and showcasing thrilling matches featuring the top Superstars.

WWE PPV: History

The highly-popular WWE PPV events have been an integral part of the show since the 1980s. It began with its classic “Big Four” events: Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. WrestleMania I was the company’s first PPV in 1985. Since then, these events have become some of the most popular ones in the world of professional wrestling.

In 2002, Raw and SmackDown were introduced as part of the company’s brand extension. While the traditional “Big Four” events showcased the entire roster, other PPV events alternated between the Raw and SmackDown brands. A reunion PPV in 2005 led to the creation of the ECW brand in 2006, which had its dedicated PPV events.

Later, the company announced that all subsequent PPV events would feature performers from all brands. In 2014, a big change took place with the launch of the WWE Network, an online streaming service that shifted the company’s focus away from traditional PPV channels. WWE started livestreaming all of its events on the WWE Network, including exclusive events like NXT TakeOver.

Brand-exclusive PPVs returned briefly after the second brand extension in 2016 but ended after WrestleMania 34 in 2018. The TakeOver series transitioned to traditional PPV in 2020 before ultimately being discontinued in late 2021. Since 2022, major NXT events have been exclusively available via livestreaming.

In the United States, WWE PPVs began airing on NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, in 2021 following a merger with the American WWE Network. However, the rest of the world has mostly maintained separate WWE Network services, except for certain regions where it merged with other streaming platforms.
