Before the start of the, they showed a promo package on the storyline between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal. It showed how Jinder became the no 1 contender for the WWE championship and how he cost Randy Orton his match at the Payback against Bray Wyatt.
The show started as the WWE champion Randy Orton came out to the arena. He entered the ring and said that at the Payback he did not lose because of Bray Wyatt but Jinder Mahal. He said that at Backlash he would teach him a lesson. Jinder Mahal along with the Singh Brothers interrupted him. He showed some promotional pictures with the WWE title and claimed that he would win the title at the Backlash. He said that at Backlash the age of Maharaja would begin.
The United States champion Kevin Owens then interrupted them. He said that no one cared about them, they only cared about the new face of America, Kevin Owens. Last week he ended Chris Jericho’s career and at Backlash as he would end AJ Styles’ career. Once he is done with AJ Styles, he would go after the WWE title.
AJ Styles then interrupted and said that he could only brag about being the face of America because he could never be the face of Smackdown. Baron Corbin came out now. Before he could say anything, Sami Zayn attacked Corbin from behind. They all fought as the face side stood tall inside the ring and the heel side escaped.
Match 1 – Natalya vs. Becky Lynch
James Ellsworth, Carmella and Tamina introduced Natalya as the best there is, was and ever will be. WWE Smackdown Women’s champion Naomi came out next, she introduced Becky Lynch. Before the match could start Charlotte also came out and said that she did not need an introduction.
The match was booked for five minutes or so and it was mostly dominated by Becky. Natalya picked up the pinfall win after a distraction for Becky caused by Tamina.
Winner – Natalya
Backstage Charlotte and Naomi were seen fighting, as they kept accusing each other for Becky’s loss. Becky came out and stopped them from fighting. She proposed a six-woman tag team match at the Backlash. Naomi and Charlotte agreed with her.
Pre-Taped promo package was shown featuring the Breezango and the Ascension. It was a funny promo.
Match 2 – Luke Harper vs. Eric Rowan
It was a small match not even booked for five minutes where Eric Rowan picked up the victory. It was not a clean victory. They should reunite these two athletes. They are of course better as a team.
Winner – Eric Rowan
Dolph Ziggler came out to the arena. He talked about his career, he said he did a lot in WWE, still, they did not cheer for him but for Shinsuke Nakamura, who never had a match on Smackdown. He called out Nakamura.
Shinsuke Nakamura came out to the arena. He took his time during the entrance, as everyone rejoiced it. Nakamura challenged him for a match directly. They pretended to start the match instantly, even a referee came out. Ziggler declined to have the match. He said that they would do it at Backlash. Ziggler attacked Nakamura from behind as Nakamura fought back, Ziggler quickly escaped.
Match 3 – The Ascension vs. Breezango
The match was not much special. It was booked to promote the Breezango. A good win for the new babyface side, as Fandango picked up the win for his team. After the match, The Usos came out and they cut a promo. It was an amazing promo. They memorised the whole thing really well.
Winners – Breezango
Rusev was seen on the big screen where he demanded an answer for his championship demand at Money in the Bank he made two weeks ago. He informed that he would make his Smackdown debut next week.
Main Event – Jinder Mahal, Baron Corbin and The WWE United States champion Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn, AJ Styles and the WWE champion Randy Orton
It was a very good match and a worthy main event. It was booked for fifteen minutes and it turned out to be a pretty entertaining match as well, AJ Styles’ performance was really mentionable. The ending was really shocking. Jinder Mahal pinned Randy Orton after a sudden Cobra Clutch slam. They are doing as much as they can to promote Jinder Mahal.
