Raquel Rodriguez has made her presence felt on the NXT roster. She’s a former women’s champion in her own right who has also accomplished two separate WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship win with two separate tag partners. Now, she’s also picked up the maiden gold on the main roster, as well.
On the August 29 episode of Monday Night Raw, Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah squared off against Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky in the Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals. The latter team was undoubtedly a huge favorite to become the winner but surprisingly, WWE allowed their adversaries to pick up the win. Aliyah scored the decisive roll-up pin on Kai with a roll-up to decide the match outcome.

Many fans were confused as to why WWE may have allowed Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah to hold the belts. It appears that the company has got big plans in store for Rodriguez that led to the title match win.
Raquel Rodriguez to be built as future star power
Dave Meltzer recently discussed Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah’s victory on Wrestling Observer Radio. He revealed that the WWE officials are currently pushing for the Mexican superstar to become a big future superstar. The veteran wrestling journalist hence feels that it was the right thing to do to make her a champion. For the time being, Aliyah had the opportunity to tag along with the future star.
“They are trying to get Raquel Rodriguez as a big star. I mean that is one of the things they are trying to do right now and Aliyah is sort of along or the ride I suppose? I didn’t think the match was particularly good. I think the one thing was that they were just trying… I think this match was just to do a surprise. Nothing else.” (transcription by Ringside News)
Dakota Kai and IYO SKY advanced into the tournament final after defeating the teams of Tamina Snuka and Dana Brooke in the first round and then Asuka and Alexa Bliss in the semifinal.
Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah defeated Xia Li and Shotzi Blackheart in the first round and then Natalya and Sonya Deville in the semifinals to set up the clash with Kai and SKY at the finale. Now the two teams are set for a rematch on the September 9 episode of Raw.
