Former Kent and Oxford University fast bowler David Sayer has died aged 80, according to a press release by Kent County Cricket Club.
One of the finest county cricketers who never donned the England jersey, Sayer had 613 first-class scalps to his name in a career that spanned over two decades.
After plying his trade for Oxford and Kent’s second XI, the pacer marked his arrival on the county stage in just his third game for Kent when his career-best match figures of 10 for only 67 including 7 for 37 in the second innings helped his team thrash Leicestershire by 10 wickets.
In 1958, he was selected in the MCC side to play against Brazilian and Argentinian side in order to promote the game in South America. He spent the next two years playing for the University team before returning to Kent in the later part of 1960.
He played his first year as a full-time Kent professional in 1961 and took two five-wicket hauls. He retired from professional cricket in 1968 a year after helping Kent win the Gillette Cup. He was again recalled by Kent eight years later as his team defeated Leicestershire by 104 runs.
