On Friday (21st June), Sri Lanka snatched a thrilling victory against the home team England in the match 27 of the ongoing 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at Headingley (Leeds).

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first and managed 232/9 (50 overs) after their initial struggle. However, England failed to chase that target as they were all out on 212 runs (47 overs). Sri Lanka won this match by 20 runs.

  • It is the best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan bowler against England in Cricket World Cup history. The previous record was 9-0-41-3 by Dilhara Fernando at North Sound on 4th April 2007. Also, in this match, Dhananjaya de Silva had the bowling figures of 8-0-32-3, and it is now the second best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan bowler against England in Cricket World Cup history.

 

ii) The right-arm pacer Lasith Malinga has taken 51 wickets in Cricket World Cup.

  • Lasith Malinga is the second Sri Lankan bowler to take 50+ wickets in Cricket World Cup. Muttiah Muralitharan is the record holder with 68 wickets in this tournament history.

  • Surpassing Rangana Herath (525 wickets), Lasith Malinga is now the third most international wicket-taker in Sri Lankan cricket history. Among the Sri Lankan bowlers, only Muttiah Muralitharan (1,331 wickets) and Chaminda Vass (760 wickets) took more wickets than Malinga.
