On Sunday (11th August), Windies star Chris Gayle made his 300th appearance in ODI cricket. He became the first Caribbean cricketer to play the 300th ODI match. Ahead of that match, the 39-year-old claimed that it was a great achievement.

It was the second game of the three-match ODI series between Windies and India at Port of Spain where Chris Gayle achieved this record. Breaking Brian Lara‘s 299 ODIs record, Gayle became the most-capped ODI player as a Caribbean cricketer. While he was the first Caribbean cricketer to play 300 ODIs, he was also the 21st overall player to play 300 ODIs.

Gayle feels that it is a great achievement. Talking to the former Caribbean cricketer Daren Ganga, Gayle added that he enjoyed batting with him.
In the pre-match interview, Gayle claimed, “It is a great achievement to play 300th ODI. When I look back, I say, could I make 300th ODI and I am very thankful that I am playing this 300th match. I enjoy playing this format without a doubt, I enjoyed batting with you (Daren Ganga) too.”
It was also Gayle’s 297th ODI for Windies. In the previous ODI, during the first game of this ODI series, Gayle became the most-capped ODI player for Windies after breaking Brian Lara’s 296 ODIs record.

During the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, Gayle became the most-capped player for Windies in international cricket. Sunday’s ODI was his 458th international match. The ongoing series is likely Gayle’s last assignment in his ODI career.

Talking about the present Windies side, Gayle has claimed that they are trying to build more unity in this side. He has further added that he is always present to guide the youngsters.

Gayle claimed, “We are trying to build more unity in our team. The guys like Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran those guys will carry West Indies forward. When John Campbell gets his chance, he will have something to showcase. I am there to guide them as much as possible and try to help West Indies cricket as much as possible.”
Earlier, India won the three-match T20I series against Windies in the USA and West Indies by the 3-0 margin. Gayle wasn’t present in that series.
The first match of the ongoing ODI series had no result due to the rain interruption.
